It seems there has been alot of buzz about Derpy being "fixed". I saw the New version of Derpy in "The Last Round-Up" and I do admit it didn't settle well with me. I still enjoyed the original. I didn't like the reason why they had her change. It didn't seem at all offensive in my opinion. When I first saw the scene in the animatic, I literally burst with joy. But I had a feeling that it might not settle with some fans and some people. Especially since people already have their own version of Derpy and people might get the wrong idea of her character.

Its not often that cartoons show fan content. Cause sometimes when you include Fan content, it usually can result to something negative (to fans or to others). And sometimes it also endangers the identity/essence of the show. Or if people like it, they will probably expect a lot more.To the point they might expect TOO much. So you could imagine my surprise when they decided to name Derpy and give her a voice.

Derpy has became more than just some fancy Easter egg in the show. She's became an Icon, a symbol to the fans of MLP:FIM. Though Derpy was created in a studio, her character was created by the fans.Β Β You can probably say that she represents all Bronies everywhere. Fans have enjoyed Derpy whenever they see her in the background until the point when she talked. The entire studio loves her as well. I was there in one of those Livestream chatrooms when people first heard her talk. It was quite entertaining how happy people were. So its no surprise to see people get really upset by this.

In a way, I understand why majority of fans are upset but blaming, pointing fingers and throwing hate around is not the way to do this. You're forgetting your own motto "Love and Tolerance". You bronies are one of inspiration and our greatest achievement. Don't sully your name by spreading Hate and intolerance. Remember, Tolerance is not the same as acceptance. If you are upset with something, display it in a more positive way. You'll get your message across much better than lashing it out with hate. Show some respect. Show some humility.

Oh I also want to address on a artist name Yamino. I've heard that she has been garnered a lot of hate by the Brony Community due to her not liking Derpy's portrayal. Let it be known, that she had NOTHING to do with the sudden change. She expressed an opinion on Derpy. That is all. She did not ask me to do this or anyone on the staff. I had to say this because the hate she's been receiving is unnecessary. So leave her be.

Also don't spam notes and messages to the people who work on the show. You're probably not going to get much out of it.

On the issue on Derpy whether she'll have the same Derp face expression and stuff. The show will still go on and I hope you will continue to support the show. Though Derpy is a great character, she is not essentially the reason why the show is awesome (though she is one of the Reasons). If Derpy never existed on that fateful scene in the first episode, would MLP be a bad show? Remember MLP is a great show because for what it is. I didn't know about Derpy until someone from the Studio pointed it out. I hope you'll still enjoy the show no matter what happens.

I hope this message will ease some of your minds. Thank you.

Ok first of all, thanks for the words of comfort, I really appreciate all the work you do for the series, but I would like to give my point of view, if you take the time to read this, I would greatly appreciate.

I'm not angry about Derpy, I'm rather disappointed, as you said in this post, we largely created Derpy, personality, work, name, history, represent us as a community, and is more than a pet, is a symbol, to make it official, recognize us as a community, as a reward if you want to use the term, the second season, has filled us with pure joy, Discord, the return of Luna, episodes as great, as Lesson Zero, Luna Eclipse, and many more, the icing on the cake came with Derpy, we could not be happier, the entire community, and here is where problems begin.

The main reason to "fix" (rather censor) Derpy is that as a character with a "clear" disability, or mental problem, so a character can not be loved or respected, so it is a joke and an offense, pardon my saying so, but it's the most absurd excuse that they could smoke in the history of animation, there have been a thousand times more stupid characters, Patrick, Sponge Bob, Ed from Ed, Edd n Eddy, also cheese, of Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends, where Lauren Faust worked, a clear example, gonzo, in the muppets, or south park where 99% of the characters are offensive, you need more examples? Ralph Wiggum of the Simpsons, and the list could go on and on indefinitely, and nobody ever complained that these characters were offensive or asked his Censorship.

Derpy was the perfect example that you need not be perfect, that even having a defect, or not being very smart, or being comical or silly, you can be loved, is not just a background character, is such an important as the main 6, and if the message you are sending both the Studio B, and Hasbro, in making this censorship is that people with discapasidad can not be loved or respected, and have to be "fixed" because have a problem and are not perfect.

As a last comment, it is sad to see you as a study failed to support the community, the way the community has supported you during this year and a half of existence, sometimes is not easy being a brony, we have to deal with people who hate us, sometimes with our own families, and yet we will always support the show, the new vercion the chapter, is a mockery to animation, RD lips even move in the part where it says Derpy, the voice of RD it shows no intention or desire, for a cartoon that has been distinguished by a flawless animation, is an offense, if the decision was taken, and had no way changed, the whole scene had been cut, or edit it in a good way, also and as important data, the bronies send more than 50 thousand signatures in one week to Hasbro, asking not to removed derpy, even so sorry to see that over 50 thousand of us, we ask for something, and you decided to listen to a minority, which has not the slightest idea of the community, what the program stands for and represents the character of Derpy, on an ad, with people in Equestria Daily, and Everfree radio, they asked that no more requests, because Derpy was safe, and now break their word? as a fan and as brony, I am disappointed, I just hope they still have to derpy as before, in the background.

by the time it took to read this, my personal view, thank you very much.

I cannot tell you how much I appreciate you posting this journal.

As a professional novelist, I do update the material I post online--and I've had this upset fans. I really do try my best to reassure them that I'm making changes in the spirit of the story.

In the Internet Age, we have the opportunity for the first time in the history of art, to run updates on our works. That's an incredible tool we've been handed. While some artists may try to censor themselves with it, one of the core principles of internet culture is that nothing of value is lost. Making an update isn't like throwing new paint on a "finished" picture. The original exists forever, unharmed, for as long as people find the comparison meaningful.

I suspect that, as companies get more acclimated to these new realities, this sort of updating will become more artful and less dramatic. Would anyone complain if George Lucas offered a v1.1 of the new Star Wars trilogy? Or if Douglas Adams had been given the magical power to make his fourth Hitchhiker's Guide book less of a "mistake," as he called it?

In my opinion, art is not a series of frozen, perfect moments, but instead a life-long journey into exploring what it means to be sentient and alive, discovering new ways to connect with people along the way. Art is the conduit through which we can glimpse the deepest parts of one another. Art lets one know, truly and sincerely, that one is not alone.

In short, keep up the good work. ^_^ You and the entire MLP staff are an inspiration.

It's true that the voice was changed, and that they don't say "derpy" anymore, but at least they didn't edit out the scene. Of course, I do think it was ridiculous that they did that, trolls could still say that she was making fun of the mentally impaired just because of her character and her derped eyes. But what matters the most is that most all of us bronies saw the original derpy scene, and will remember it in our hearts^^. Seriously, though, it's still derpy, whether or not she just sounds less like herself. And in the latest episode, they had her in the snowglobe, which just shows that y'all staff aren't getting rid of her because of the last roundup

I like Derpy being in the background. It's fun to try and find her. Just please, please, please don't change her eyes.

As someone who is clumsy due to double vision, I think the removal of Derpy is more offensive than anything. It sends the message that it's not ok to be clumsy, even though I can't help it.

Seriously, I think I just lost some huge respect for this fandom. Can't we all just watch and enjoy a show without making such drama about it? Just like the normal part of the fanbase does? Thanks.

Anyway, thanks for your wise words, my friend. You deserve this:

The real problem that people are picking out is going along with what was said here "You're forgetting your own motto "Love and Tolerance"."

I myself am keeping to it, as I hope the majority of us do. However forcing Derpy to change because she is different....how is that tolerating?

I amagainst causing any upheaval with this since I just want to enjoy the show and not cause issues, but still I find it incorrect to have someone preach this at us, if they themselves aren't living up to it. We should all tolerate each other and Derpy.

Austinl95 In reply to Ragnarokia [2012-02-26 18:33:13 +0000 UTC]

This may be the closest you could get to describing how i feel about this. You cant say to people that they need to be more tolerant of others when the entire issue is about the studio not allowing a character stay the same just because she was different from others. But the only thing that hit a nerve for me was them changing her eyes. You can have any voice you want but a character's most defining feature is their looks. I feel her eyes were what made her who she was and by changing that Hasbro started this whole mess. Like I said, the voice change is perfectly fine in my book, I just don't like seeing characters lose their defining features. Thank You

I don't know. When I saw her last episode, she looked like the same Derpy. She's not changing in future episodes.

Also, seeing Flutterbitch really showed that Discord, despite being a man-child really is someone not to take lightly even if his overconfidence (and colorblindness apparently) got the best of him (seriously! Could you not SEE that they regained their color?!) So I don't see how any of them were bad. The worse I could think of is Pinkie not shutting up in episode 1 and 2 (I JUST DECIDED TO GIVE THIS SHOW A TRY AND HAD MY DEFENCES UP GO AWAY!)

I don't really have a pony in this race... ahem, sorry. I didn't care for the original voice, because to me, it was too cliche for the way the character looked, but really, Derpy seems to be a clumsy pony with 2 lazy eyes, a terrible thing for her, but it's part of her charm. Plus with two lazy eyes, you're bound to be clumsy. I did actually like the new voice better when i saw the clip though.
I enjoy the show, and I have a friend who informs me of the fan base stuff, so I'm aware that there seemed to be two different names fans clung too, and I suspect part of the hate for the "official" Derpy comes from the part of the base that didn't get their version.
Now everyone, the haters and the lovers should also consider this, the chances of any more Fan Base names, and characterizations making it into the show, has probably decreased to just above pure zero.

Is it so weird that I like the new voice best? I found it way cuter than it was in the first version, also I wouldn't mind if Derpy's name would be "Ditzy Doo" again, I actually like this one better and I think it's a cuter name for her (and no, I don't think that people who are disabled or handicapped should change or any other bullshit like that, nobody has to change and nobody deserves to be treated differently. The only thing that I want to say it's that this character was designed to be clumsy and goofy, that's it, I didn't even thought that this pegasus was an offensive stereotype. I also don't think that it was meant to send that kind of message at all, sometimes people see things that aren't there).
Some people thought that this was offensive and complained, Derpy's speaking role was modified ad her name cutted, and now people rant and complains as much because of that. They keep it = people rage; They change it = people rage as well. What to do then? This was going to happen sooner or later, for me it's not a big deal, it's ok. Also I want to thank Kreoss for this clarification, thank you! You guys are the best, keep on going!

I was kind of disappointed with the fact the voice sounded nothing like Pierce Smoulder from youtube, but I got used to it. However, so long as her facial expression (I do mean eyes) remains unchanged, as well as her personality which I'm sure had some influence from brony fandom, I can accept the new voice as a very welcome change. In fact, if she had more speaking roles, even as off-handed comic relief, it would only add to the show. Just don't drive it into the ground.

Hasbro does actually like bronies. They have had a few shoutouts of their own, but they didn't shower us with attention as others did. Being a corporation, they have some anti-social issues to be sure, but they really do appreciate us and their new toy line (Toys R Us exclusive) is basically a shoutout of their own.

While I dispise corporations as you seem to, please keep a level head and understand the situation before spouting intolerant statements like that. Hasbro has given Studio B a lot of room and from what I hear, pay them more than most kid shows, even if they aren't showering them with bits.

There are things they are doing right. And at some point, everypony does something wrong.

Hasbro were the creators of the MLP license.

If anything, you're ignorant on how this is their own original IP that they've always had control over. Ever since the early 80's. Lauren Faust re-invented aspects of it and did redesigns and brought better characterizations to the characters and a better story backbone to top it all off. She did not create the franchise, she only developed the show.

The original creator of MLP hardly anyone cares about and she is pretty much completely indifferent to the entire fan community (heh, proberbly swimming in a pile of money like Scrooge McDuck, I suppose). There's a very cool site I've heard about that can actually give you a brain: its called Wikipedia. You should use it sometime.

I'm sorry you don't find it offensive they censored Derpy, but I'm mad like you wouldn't beleve right now because I did find it offensive the changed her. I just wish I could at least send my complaint to Hasbro and let them know that I'm not buying anything from them ever again until they change back Derpy to what she was, not this crap. The new voice, and the fact they took away the name isn't sitting well with me. And because of this I couldn't just stay a person that liked the show but didn't want to be called a bronie. However this has me upset and I can't just stay netural about this any more, if I have to call my self a bronie now in public so I can get back what right, then so be it, I'm a bronie and proud of it.

But the thing that has me angry like Pinkie Pie after someone tried to brake a Pinkie Pie Swear is that there's people that didn't like the original voice of Derpy. I can't understand how they didn't like the voice, sure she sounded a bit on the down-syndrome(is that the spelling?) side, but this could have been used as a teaching moment about how one should be able to be friends with someone with Disabilities and how you try to understand them and help them in anyways they need. or something to that extent, I apologize in advance if I've offended anyone by what I said, but I'm not sure how else to put it better. I hope everyone gets where I'm going with this.

But the biggest thing that has me mad is that I can't for the life of me find an e-mail address to send to hasbro my objection to this, a civil and polite objection of how I will be boycotting anything Hasbro, it's got me so mad that I'm on the verge of not watching anymore Transformers Prime because of it.
