I point out that "y'all" is useful in that it adds numeric information.... so either adopt it or bring back "thou"

It's actually a contraction of 'you' and 'all'. So y'all can quitcherbitchin' iffen ya don' like it.

English is pretty much the only language in which the same word applies to both singular and plural. I take French and it's "tu" for one informal person and "vous" for formal and/or multiple people.

for spanish it is tu and vosotros. just saying

It depends. From what I've seen, "vosotros" is only used by Spaniards. I've only ever heard "tu" or "usted".

However, some linguistic flaws:
"Y'all" is used in 2nd plural (thou -> you, you -> y'all).
And I don't recall "Y'all" being a colloquialism. At least in Dixie.
