I just realized I have a few more questions, if youβre willing to assist me? As I said Iβm going to have them basically at my hips, so do you think they could fit in some kind of prongs/sockets? Like make a sort of port for them to fit in? If you have any tips Iβd really appreciate it!

I had made these for a TF2 costume. They turned out beautifully. But my house was struck by lightning , a bit smoke damaged, but they will still work.

Beautiful! Thank you so much!Β
I'm planning on making this on a much bigger scale... bigger than a coathanger will allow. I also don't think coathanger material will be strong enough to hold up the weight. What material do you recommend?

I would go for PVC piping for larger scale. Glad I could help!

So this is like super late but thanks so much for this tutorial!
I'm doing a steampunk cosplay for Katsucon 2017 (my first con ) and i wanted to make it unique with some lovely not-too-big not-too-small wings but most of the other tutorials were either massive, expensive, or just not what I was looking for but this one is perfect for the wings I'm planning on making with some adjustments
I hope you don't mind but I'll be posting progress pics and will credit and put a link back to this because it's awesome
though I do have a question (and I'm not sure if you can answer this still, idk if you still have em) but you said you hot glued the wings to the mesh, correct? Did it hold well? And also do you remember where you got the mesh screen or where it might be available? (I was going to check out Home Depot or micheals crafts)

Hey there! Glad the tutorial was helpful!
The glue did hold up well, but I'd make sure to add a little extra for the lower rows and along the edges to help with sturdiness. Β The mesh was bought at Deseurres and I'm pretty certain they still carry it.
Yay Katsucon!! You're going to love it!

This is really neat. I have these signature characters I draw that I call Flyers. They're people with wings, but their wings are attached to their arms instead of their back. I want to do a Flyer cosplay outfit eventually, but I had no idea how to do wings. I've actually been looking for tutorials just like this. You've given me some great ideas to think on. Thanks!

How did you attach the wings to your jacket? I'm doing a costume where I need Β have wings (essentially the same as yours), with a varsity jacket, but, to fool young children, I don't want whatever keeping them on to show, and I don't want to mess with the jacket (because I want to wear it on a daily basis). Any advice?

Hey so ive made my wings and am at the point of making the harness, which in retrospect I should have done first. But I cant get anything to stay attached to the center portion for the harness the wings just keep rotating and dropping down. How did you get the plastic to stay??

I was going to use your tutorial, but i was wondering how heavy they were when you were wearing them and how much support they needed? i am trying to make an alternate harness so that the place where the wings come together is under a sweatshirt and im having trouble figuring out how

Kukuzilla In reply to Lyokolover2 [2013-12-21 04:59:35 +0000 UTC]
Hey there,
These wings measure about a foot and half wide each. I'd probably go smaller for FLuttershy since Gilda's wings are a bit bigger than the ponies. Also, no one has asked this one yet, lol!

So, I have made my wing's frame.
And the wire is on.
But I'm soo afraid to do the feathers.
I mean, I have like 200 of them so if I goof up I can fix it...
But I'm still afraid!!
I'm making Skylander's wings
Sonic Boom and Sunburn!!!
I'm doing Sonic Boom's first because his is almost all black (I'm splashing in some turquoise with the fluffy feathers)
And if I goof up it wont be as noticeably...
Not to mention Sonic Boom is for me, and Sunburn is for my little sister lol
I know it seems super simple, but can anyone give me any tips on feather placement??

Try looking up photos of real bird wings and study the layers of the feathers. Also, be sure to start from the bottom!

For the part that connects to your jacket, did you just cover the back of it with more feathers to mask it? I'm trying to do a rule 63 Gilda for an upcoming con, so this tutorial was very very helpful. Thanks a bunch for posting it!

I have some question. If you can answer that'd be great!
Β
I still don't understand how you make the back support and keep it down to your back. Can you explain more?
Also, how didΒ you get your wings through your clothes without showing your support and straps?
Is it heavy at all?
π: 0 β©: 1
Kukuzilla In reply to Nocturnal--Artist [2013-12-21 04:57:30 +0000 UTC]
Hey there! Sorry this reply has taken me forever >.<
My Gilda wings are attached to the back of the jacket with glue and then covered with the match fabric, and straps are coming through the inside of the sleeves. Others ways to make you support stay are by using magnets (create a pocket inside the outfit with the other end on the wing support) or wire slots (done very much like corset boning, only you're sliding the actually wing wires into the slots of the outfit)
Hope this helps!

Hey there, awesome tutorial! I just have a question. My characters 'wings' kinda span out from her shoulders, not her back, since its a mantle. Do you have any idea how I could alter the wiring to make it so its closer to hers?

Hello!
Perhaps you could build it as a shoulder harness instead? If it were me, I would build the wings right into the collar part and bring the wiring all the way to the front, or not put wiring at all and just use the diamond mesh alone. Also, making the front area heavier will help balance it all!
Hope this helps!

Kukuzilla In reply to Albuerto [2013-10-04 04:20:45 +0000 UTC]
There are straps going through inside the jacket, as well as the center support piece glued to the back of the jacket and covered with fabric/feathers.
