Description FULL VIEW FOR TUTORIAL

Update: 15th June 2010

As I am too busy, It will be hard for me to reply to comments on this page. However, if the issue is really pressing, you're free to note me, and I will do my best to answer.

Let's help each other! If you see a question on this page that you can answer, feel free to help out. You'll have all our gratitude.

---------------------------------------------------------

Take note before beginning the tutorial:
1. You must have a tablet. Wacom is a popular and reliable brand for the most part. For beginners, I'd suggest a Bamboo Fun model.

2. For photoshop, only version 7.0 and up has wacom support. For other software, please check [link] to see if yours has the right support.

3. Also, please ensure you have your tablet drivers are installed. If yours is a wacom model you can download them from the wacom homepage at [link]

--------------------------------------

I've received quite a number of question regarding my work, one of them being "How DO you do your lineart?" Hopefully, this tutorial will answer that question.

This is a BEGINNER LEVEL TUTORIAL that was done in Photoshop CS, but should work for any version with tablet capabilities. Even if you dont use photoshop, the fundamentals are the same.

Please tell me if it helps, and if I should do a colour tutorial. (I am considering it, but its ALOT of work.)

I currently use an A5 size tablet. (note the size meaning the active area, not the whole thing itself.)

First of all, I just wanted to say that this tutorial is very helpful ^^ and one of my favourite <3

second, I have a question....for the pen pressure, the second time I tried doing that, it worked, but after I closed photoshop, and went back to it the next day, it just remains normal all the time, as if there's not pen pressure set. I don't think I use a wacom tablet..some other tablet...uh..e3works I think Is there anyway to make the pressure setting work?

If you're still having probelms, try unplugging the usb cable of your tablet, re-plugging it, and THEN open Photoshop.

Sorry for the late reply! If you still have any questions, I'll be glad to offer my help!

hmm..First of all, please check that you have the proper driver for your tablet. If you dont you can download it from [link] . If you have the driver installed already, try quitting photoshop, activating the pen mode on your tablet driver, and restarting photoshop.

excuse me ._.

but...didn't catch a thingy...

do you make the sketch in photoshop? directly with the tablet?

or it is made first in pencil?

👍: 0 ⏩: 2

kuridoki In reply to meheux [2007-04-04 02:37:23 +0000 UTC]

I usually do my sketches in photoshop using the pencil tool.

... erm, excuse me too...

I don't think it really matters if the sketch was done directly in photoshop or on paper. It's just as long as you have a sketch to ink over... I think...

I hope that helps

Nice tutorial, but I have a question...

I have a tablet, but my lines don't look like that anymore, and neither does the pressure. It used to, but now it's...broken? If you know what's wrong can I get a little help?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

kuridoki In reply to fullmetalaere [2007-03-15 02:51:05 +0000 UTC]

Try replugging the USB cable. If that doesnt work, close photoshop, replug and start photoshop again.

That should help. if it doesn't, just ask again. I'll do my best to help!

Mm......try playing around with your tablet driver. Switching from pen mode to mouse mode, restarting photoshop while switching.

I'm sort of having a problem... I got to step three... but I can't find the bulletin icon for the pressure and brush presets. I looked for it eeeverywhere including obviously the upper right... I don't even see the icon next to it with the file and the magnifying glass icon... although I have version 6.0 cause my computer broke and I'm using my backup (not-up-to-date) computer... is that why? @_@

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

kuridoki In reply to Mistress-Entia [2007-03-13 03:57:04 +0000 UTC]

hmm...You should be able to use a tablet on version 6.0. Check if you have the driver for your tablet installed in your control panel. If not, download it from [link] (if yours is a wacom tablet).

Gah x.x It is.. I honestly have no clue how to use it except the basics... I got it as a realllllly late birthday present yesterday xD I was planning on buying it with my own money but my dad bought it for me and.. well.... he got the wrong one <<; he doesn't have a good enough computer for the photoshop elements 4 to work and neither do the brushes @_@ I dunno if that has something to do with it or not ^___^;;; (By the way you're reallllllllly spiffy. Thank you so much for helping!)

So sorry! I just checked the software support list and I dont think 6.0 supports Wacom tablets. but perhaps you'd like to check this list [link] for software that you might be able to get your hands on. Again, so sorry!

Thank you so much! Just what I need for my new tablet!
I got a kinda dumb question thought.. The step 3, I can't find the brush settings and it's probably cause my photoshop is in swedish :S But do you know how I can change the language to english or exacly how I shall click to get to the settings? Sorry to bother but I'm kinda bad at finding the stuff

👍: 0 ⏩: 3

kuridoki In reply to Lee-master [2007-01-22 02:02:41 +0000 UTC]

The button for the brush settings is at the top right hand corner. It looks like a bulletin. If you have any other questions, feel free to ask. Im not too sure about the language option, but you could try Edit >> Preferences (its the second option from the top menu, and the last option in the drop down list. I'm using Photoshop CS btw.

Hope that helped!

Excellent resource, thanks. What if I tried lining in size 1, though? I've really been pushing to get my lines thinner.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

kuridoki In reply to MaullarMaullar [2007-01-08 02:14:18 +0000 UTC]

If you were working at 200+dpi, I think carpal tunnel might get you before you finish your lineart. xD If you want it thinner, I can teach you a good trick. (just continue working with a size 9 first)

1.) Merge your lines into one layer (Ctrl+E = merge down)
2.) Get a selection of your lineart layer (Hold Ctrl + Click on lineart layer)
3.) In the top menu, select "Select" >> Modify >> Contract. 1px should do.
4.) Do an inverse selection (can be found in "select">>Inverse)
5.) Press Delete.

You should a much finer lineart, but you should still touch up on areas which have been thinned too much.

If you'd like to do it manually, just use a size 4-6px brush.

Hope that helped!

How big should the pic originally start, like width and height wise, because when yours is at 100% its like giant, what size is your 100% in that pic?
