Update: 15th June 2010

As I am too busy, It will be hard for me to reply to comments on this page. However, if the issue is really pressing, you're free to note me, and I will do my best to answer.

Let's help each other! If you see a question on this page that you can answer, feel free to help out. You'll have all our gratitude.

---------------------------------------------------------

Take note before beginning the tutorial:
1. You must have a tablet. Wacom is a popular and reliable brand for the most part. For beginners, I'd suggest a Bamboo Fun model.

2. For photoshop, only version 7.0 and up has wacom support. For other software, please check [link] to see if yours has the right support.

3. Also, please ensure you have your tablet drivers are installed. If yours is a wacom model you can download them from the wacom homepage at [link]

--------------------------------------

I've received quite a number of question regarding my work, one of them being "How DO you do your lineart?" Hopefully, this tutorial will answer that question.

This is a BEGINNER LEVEL TUTORIAL that was done in Photoshop CS, but should work for any version with tablet capabilities. Even if you dont use photoshop, the fundamentals are the same.

Please tell me if it helps, and if I should do a colour tutorial. (I am considering it, but its ALOT of work.)

I do my pieces ready-for-print, so the resolution is usually about >250dpi. When you make a new image, there's a drop-down list where you can choose a default size. I usually start out with A4 and do adjustments if I need to.

ok thanks so much, also, do
you know any tricks, to keep the line art from being so shakey?

If you aren't already zooming in when you're doing your lineart, I strongly suggest you do so. As for the shaky lines, it does take some getting use to (assuming you're using a tablet). Work out the lines in fast, short strokes (but not too short to the extent your lines turn out feathery.) and you find it's still too messy, you can always erase the edges to get it smooth.

Hope that helped! If you have any questions, just feel free to ask!

yea, i just got my tablet for christmas, and trying to get used to it, heres a question that's not about lineart, do you think you'll ever put out a colouring tutorial, because all of your directions are really clear and easy to follow for beginners.

o_O Yasmin is stuffed.

Okies... i don't know what is going on, i likes the pics, and it seems basic, other than no program was stated, and no was how the preliminary sketch was done.

-_-" I must be way behind the times, eh?

OMGGGG Like, the first tutorial I actually understand!! Thanks for getting strait to the point in each step!! That makes it easier for beginners xD Instead of distraction us with comments and stuff! Thank you soo much!
Favorite defenetly!! And about the coloring tutorial, one thing, if you are going to make one, MAKE IT TO THE POINT and explaining exactly what you did and have at least pics of what you used, (tools and stuff) because me as a beginner, didnt get ANYTHING from other "popular" tutorials because they didnt really explaines to "n00bs" and said everything as if everybody knows what they are talking about xDDUUU I'm serious! u.uUU Or maybe is just me being dumb xDD either way, thats my recomendation xDDDD
Thank you again!

I can see where you are coming from! Thanks for the feedback, it is much appreciated. It's my first time for tutorials, so I wasn't very aware back then. I did state that the colour tutorial was at intermediate level, so I didn't pay much attention to tools. But my newer tuts (If I ever do them, of course) will be better in terms of explanation.

Thanks again!

So it IS possible to get that neat lineart, only by sizing it down... o.o Hmm, I feel lining might become easier for me starting now. :3

Im getting a problem, I dont notice any pressure when i make my strokes, my Photoshop CS2 was already on Pre-pressure. when i make a stroke light or hard, it doesnt change. If you can help me with this that would be great, or its Opencanvas for me

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

kuridoki In reply to Paran0id42 [2006-08-25 14:11:42 +0000 UTC]

Hm. Make sure you've installed the driver for your tablet model. If you're using a wacom, you can download it from their site at [link]

Secondly, go to your control panel, select the pen tablet icon, then change your pen settings to "Pen" (at this point you might need to make a few adjustments). THEN, open photoshop. (change settings first, THEN photoshop)

It should work if your brush is on Pressure mode. If it works just fine, but you dont like that magnetic mouse effect, you can just switch back to mouse mode on the tablet settings.

This should be pretyy much it. If it still doesn't work, try restarting the com or taking out and re-plugging the USB for the tablet.

Hope this helps!

I've got this problem too, but I have PS CS. I did what you suggested and it's still not working, but it worked the last time I did a lineart on the computer. I just re-plugged in the tablet too.

How much do suggest you resize(the percentage)?
Or rather, how much larger then the finished size should it be inked at?

This Tutorial was perfe--PERFECT for me.

See, I just got my Wacom Tablet, and I never realised that it shared as many simularities with painting as it does with drawing. My experiance with painting is slim, and my experiance with PS is slim too. I knew there was going to be some adjusting to do, but I expected most of my learning to be program based (Photoshop 7), not everything-based.

So, a simple laymens talk tutorial like this is JUST the ticket to get me off on the right foot. ^_^ For example, I'd been practicing my sketches at 600x400 at some unknown dpi! ^_^ But behold, crank some numbers really high, and Ive got a great medium to work with, and look semi decent when shrunk. WOO!

You rock.

Notice the red star compared to the grey one? the grey is sharp and ugly, the red soft and smooth.

That's my problem. Can you please dear god help me?

I followed youre steps but it did'nt seem to work

I think this will be useful for my cg practice since I work on my illustrations traditionally (with some PS moves, hehe!)
