Description
Final product: [link]*YOU NEED TO FULL VIEW TO SEE WHAT IT'S AT XP*
So this is a huge file but you sort of have to see it big to be able to read and see. I hope I made enough sense... I skipped the explanation of some steps, but that's because I've done another tutorial that explains it. you can view it here: [link]
what's new in this one? well I elaborate on lineart and lineweight just a tad, and my discovery of white pens... sadly by the time I got there I kept forgetting to take step by step pictures but you could probably see what's been done... I hope...
The girl in here is Sahara, an OC that I only now decided on her colouring and well only now do I officially say her name is Sahara.
If you have any questions feel free to ask and I'll elaborate as I know that I'm not always clear in these tutorial comments >w<
Oh and helpful tips:
-if your nib is dry, try diping it into rubbing alcohol, it'll save you some money so that you don't need to by a new tip/marker as often and it's cheaper!
-white pens are great for adding shiny things in pictures but you can also use them to correct your lineart! that said you can't colour over your white pen cover up but what you can do is scan and print the lineart so that you have that to colour on! beware some printer inks will blend with markers... Laser printers are safe! my HP printer blends a wee little bit but it can be manageable. I do not know about other printers...
-I find that all brands of markers work as well as each other in most cases and have their own pros and cons. I personnally like letraset markers best and prismacolours the least but it's up to individual preference.
Hope this was helpful! any comments? areas of improvement? suggestion for another tutorial?
Kat

Thank you!!! >w<
I used to only do linearts, so I've had LOTS of practice, I only really started colouring in the last 5 years ^v^. Totally believe in "practice makes perfect"

Ha ha, I haven't even been drawing for five years!! XD That really is a lot of practice on your part! It shows. :3

>w< well then more sign of talent for you! I've been drawing for as long as I can remember, I'm told that I draw things before I wrote words... there was LOTS of practice XP
Art has definitely been an earned skill rather than true talent >w<

Haha, that's good. And like I said, it shows. Especially with your digital work. :3 All your work, actually.
And lol, most peoples art skills are earned. The only person who was probably simply born with the ability to draw really well is Akiana. (You've heard of her right? The child prodigy who was drawing like this [link] at age five?)

I know, right? Whenever I heard of her, though I was sorta young at the time, I still knew it was a pretty big deal. Crazy.

Awesome tutorial, I am very tempted to try you technique out except I'm fairly certain I won't do anything half as nice. How many different skin tone colours did you use to colour her face? It looks so smooth and beautifully blended.
Also white gel pens do rock! I love how you use them, that's very creative.

THAAANKKKK YOUUUUU!!!!! >w<
Aww, they do need some getting used to withe the colour bleeding and how pressure can change some effects... but it just takes a few tries and then it's easy (and easy to the point that you know what order you can switch around )
The skin is for the most part 3 colours but I use the two lighter shades twice to get more of a gradient... the lightest shade I use to go over the whole thing for blending >w<
>w< thanks! I love the white gel pen! it's my newest and favourite discovery! I found them in August and boy am I glad! Our wedding is coming up XD

What your wedding is coming up?! I don't think so! Although I guess you deserve it more..... I only use the white gel pen to doodle on my clothes when I'm bored.
Anyways I always have the problem when it comes to markers of pushing too hard and that always causes splotches and dark spots. Bad habit I picked up from using coloured pencils.
I will definitely have to try your marker technique now - how do you stop yourself from having bleeds and dark splotches? A very steady hand? Or is there a trick to it?

Yes my white gel pen understands me so well! we've had such marvelous times together~~~ I asked it to marry me and it never said no so I take it as a yes~~
Does it work? the doodling on clothing? I never tried XD sounds fun!!!
hmmm what brand did you use?? if it's copics I can see how it's can be weird and blotchy... though perhaps the tougher nibs of some "pantone" letraset markers or prismacolours? hmmm XD (I like to press hard too and those are the markers that surprisingly are easier for me to use XP)
well bleeds happen no matter what. (so I dont colour up to the lines I sort of let it bleed to the lines XP) so that's a trick... You'll need to get a practice sheet to see how much of a bleed there is because the more you press the more it tends to bleed... as for splotches that is sort of related to steady hands in that you don't want to pause in one place with the marker touching the paper. >w< Or at least that's what I've found.

The markers and pens I use are Staedtlers, I think it's a German brand; they kind of have brush-like ends so that could be where I'm having the problems with splotches. What brand do you prefer the most? Also is there a particular paper that works best? Something thicker?
Lol the doodlings work best on dark clothes and wash out real easy so I'm constantly having to redo my "hard" work.

KuriosiT-kat In reply to tedzerds21 [2010-02-22 14:30:36 +0000 UTC]
I know that brand (they are famous for colour pens in my mind ) and yeah they are german >w< never used their markers though....
I personally like letraset pantone markers or letraset promarkers best (it has 3 different thicknesses of tips the thickest ones good for large surfaces and the smaller ones for smaller areas and smoothing out the edges XP
after that copics (most believe copics are the best though I'm weird and like the letraset XP)
as for paper, I've not experimented much with it yet I've only used printer paper haha thicker paper soaks more in so colours can get dark and may not blend as nicely... though thinner papers bleed like crazy so the nice middle ground?
hahaha oh the masterpiece got washed out!!! *sobsobsob* well then by the end of it all you'll be doing masterpieces in your sleep

Markers well they aren't "hard" but definitely not straightforwardly easy either
it's one of those things that can be so easy once you figure out how they work but getting used to them is the trouble >_O )
try it if you want but I say try it with someone elses markers for the first few times (because they are an investment) and when you are comfortable enough get a few

Yup that is all the step by step... one of these days I'll get like this automatic camera to video or take pictures of the process and all that... XP because I lose out on the "wet/blendy" times sometimes with taking pictures X3
glad you liked it! >w< we have to have a parkering go at sometime XP maybe I can get you as addicted to them as I have become... maybe not I'm pretty addicted XD but um you might really like the effect aand I can certainly give you pointers XP
Ohhhh!!!! Yay!!! That would be totally awesome!! I'd love it if you could join! even with a quickie drawing or whatever X3 that and that's a promise of more Caro art at long last!!!

Oh that would be really sweet if you could film the whole process. I feel like you had given me videos where you did that once though?
Honestly I've loved your markers from the beginning, ever since you drew me that girl that's squeezing the cat haha, but I remember you said they were pretty expensive
Yeah, I will definitely participate, but my entry will probably come sometime later in March, since I've got a lot of work to do 'til then! But you'll definitely get something from me!

>w< I shall do it someday when I have the help of a tripod XD
I might have given you a video of something for digital art I have a "record the screen thing" >w< I dont' even remember where I put it because it apparently is not with me anymore hahhahaha
well for markers they get expensive... nearing 3 dollars per marker for the most part... :/ but the Letraset pantone come on sale now and then and then it's like 2.25 dollars per marker... still for a basic set usually pay around 50$ *investment*
Ohhh yay!!!! don't worry too much the deadline is in May~~ so there is time yet! but I'm glad to know that I'll ve getting a Caro entry~!!! >w< YAYS!

Ohhh well if a set gets around for $50 I will definitely consider it. What was the name of the store where you get them again? I feel like it was somewhere downtown or on Bank or something.
Yes, I will definitely make you an entry!! Like I said, after March 17th I will be as free as a bird can get until beginning of April. I will formulate an idea in my head for now, then start working on it around that time. I'm so excited, I am having drawing withdrawals, I want to use my beautiful tablet!!!!!!!!!!!! xD

Yup >w< there wasn't much I could say as I'm still learning XD I bought and used my first white pen in August so I've only had a few goes with it but so far this is what I've found makes drawings pop X3
I also over exaggerated the speckle and white line use a tad in this picture but it just makes it "shinier" so all good to me >w< I'm glad it helps!
and thanks a bunch for the fave!
