Description Yay! I'm finally getting some work done on this tutorial! Parts 2 and 3 are almost ready too. They just have some minor details that need to be added.

Hit the download button to see the tutorial at it's full size!

Part 1 - Measurements
Part 2 - Choosing fabric [link]
Part 3 - Kimono pieces [link]
Part 4 - Sewing the sleeves (coming soon)
Part 5 - Sewing the body and attaching the sleeves (coming soon)
Part 6 - Attaching the collar and finishing (coming soon)

Oh! And one more thing! I just found this neat website for figuring out your kimono size. Under the waist measurement put in the part of your body that is widest (hips, bust or waist) to get better results: [link]

Still, it might be best to take some measurements for your arms and such just to be safe since everyone's proportions are different.

A waist measurement is not required. Generally, the widest part of a person's body is used to create the overall width of the garment. This happens to be the hips on a great deal of women. If that is not the case for you, just substitute the widest part of your body (bust, waist or hips) for the hip measurement in the pattern above.

Have you ever messed with Karinui? Are kimono really that difficult to make?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Kurokami-Kanzashi In reply to shatterskye [2008-06-18 00:03:04 +0000 UTC]

Heh heh, have I ever messed with karinui? This is my current karinui queue: [link] And all of these were karinui when I first got them: [link] [link] [link] [link] [link] [link] [link]

Personally, I don't feel that kimono are particularly difficult to sew, they're just time consuming and keeping the seams nice and flat requires some care. Lined kimono are also, of course, more difficult to sew than unlined kimono. It mostly just depends on the order in which you sew things together, though. Also, if you're making something that has a lot of patterns matching across the seams, that takes a little bit of work.

Woohoo!! I'm really excited about this! I've been thinking I want to make my own kimono (one that's not from the crappy Simplicity pattern), but I've been put off by the fear of messing it up and wasting good fabric. I'm looking forward to the rest!

Arleen [2008-01-09 14:19:53 +0000 UTC]

I have a question concerning amounts of fabric needed.

It is ver unlikely, that here in Poland, I can buy a japanese piece of fabirc, so I'll have to use western fabric.
How should I calculate the amount needed?

I wouldn't want to wake up with too little material.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Kurokami-Kanzashi In reply to Arleen [2008-01-22 01:44:09 +0000 UTC]

Well, western bolts can be nice because they're much wider, so the amount of fabric you buy isn't as long as a Japanese bolt. Take the measurement for the length of the kimono you want to make, multiply it by two. That will be enough fabric to make the kimono body and probably even the front extension panels (if the bolt is wide enough) Then it's up to you how much fabric you want for the sleeves. So for an unlined kimono, I find that 5 meters is enough for me to work from. For a lined kimono you want twice as much.

Arleen In reply to Kurokami-Kanzashi [2008-01-22 07:51:57 +0000 UTC]

So about 5 meters Thanks, that helps a lot, I won't wake up ith too little material and a half-sewed kimono

You're the greatest!

taeliac [2008-01-07 22:54:20 +0000 UTC]

Oh! very cool - is it going to be a more realistic kimono pattern (i.e. the sleeves open in the back XP) because that would be so awesome! I can't wait to see it all done, cuz all I can really have the patience for is a fakie one

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Kurokami-Kanzashi In reply to taeliac [2008-01-22 01:44:34 +0000 UTC]

Thanks! Yep! It's going to be a tutorial for making a fully lined kimono.

Kurokami-Kanzashi In reply to taeliac [2008-01-30 21:56:04 +0000 UTC]

Well, I've really mostly made fully lined kimono in the past. The only unlined one I've done was my Africa kimono.

YAY! I can wait to get the whole tutorial and attempt to make my first kimono! I tried to make a yukata last year but I had problems with the collar and stuff like that, it ended up looking decent... Except for the top half ... So I hope this will come out a little better !

Kurokami-Kanzashi In reply to akuma2636 [2008-01-22 01:50:12 +0000 UTC]

Well, I'll try to make things as easy to understand as I can. It's proving rather difficult to explain how a lined kimono is done.
