Description
Here's the third installment of my kimono tutorial.Hit the download button to see the tutorial at it's full size!
Part 1 - Measurements [link]
Part 2 - Choosing fabric [link]
Part 3 - Kimono pieces
Part 4 - Sewing the sleeves (coming soon)
Part 5 - Sewing the body and attaching the sleeves (coming soon)
Part 6 - Attaching the collar and finishing (coming soon)
Oh! And one more thing! I just found this neat website for figuring out your kimono size. Under the waist measurement put in the part of your body that is widest (hips, bust or waist) to get better results: [link]
Still, it might be best to take some measurements for your arms and such just to be safe since everyone's proportions are different.
***Please note: I've left the lengths of most of the collar pieces blank for now because I'm still fidgiting with those.***

I don't mean to be annoying, but are you planning to finish the rest of the tutorial? This is by far the best one I've found, and I would love to know the rest!
Thank you very much. Best of luck to you.

I have loved all your tutorials! And since I've recently found a partner who's just as into Japan and all that goes with it, he's seen this tutorial and has practically bought the fabric for me to make one!! Looking forward to the rest of it so I can hopefully get it done before he gets home from sea!! Even this much should be enough for me to nut out the rest...

THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THIS!!! I watched for these but devART didn't show me this or #2... I'm doing a panel on calculating values, and the link sort-of helps but half the measurements aren't listed Once I have time to look at your calculations in detail I'll probably be able to figure the rest out though

wow excellent work! to line an Uchikake would you use the same basic method to make the pattern?

Kurokami-Kanzashi In reply to TatsuFuku [2009-05-02 22:24:27 +0000 UTC]
Thanks! The uchikake lining is exactly the same as the pieces on the outter kimono - aside from some extra length to accomodate the padding at the bottom.

Wow, my sister loves this tutorial and I can see why. It's really detailed and easy-to-follow.
The background is gorgeous too. Is that made from a Photoshop brush or did you do it yourself?

Thank you! I made the background myself. It's not an illustrator brush. I actually made the little sakura flowers in illustrator for a school assignment, and I've been using them on other things ever since.

O, that's great!! i gonna use the results of your careful research)) though may i ask you what is the approximate length of the collar and its reinforcement? just to count the amount of fabric necessary)) can't wait for the continuation, thank you so much))))))

Kurokami-Kanzashi In reply to aluko [2008-11-05 04:17:06 +0000 UTC]
Thank you! Well the collar length is about a metre and a half and the collar reinforcement is about a third of that.

This is very cool to see - the lining has always scared the heck out of me
And, it's good to know that I'm not totally screwing up the collar - I was confused, if it was a straight piece, or a shaped piece XP

Kurokami-Kanzashi In reply to taeliac [2008-04-18 20:32:54 +0000 UTC]
Yeah, that collar is a difficult thing to learn, I've done it a few different ways before figuring out the "right" way. The trick is really in how it's attached rather than how the fabric is actually shaped.
