Description
Here's the third installment of my kimono tutorial.Hit the download button to see the tutorial at it's full size!
Part 1 - Measurements [link]
Part 2 - Choosing fabric [link]
Part 3 - Kimono pieces
Part 4 - Sewing the sleeves (coming soon)
Part 5 - Sewing the body and attaching the sleeves (coming soon)
Part 6 - Attaching the collar and finishing (coming soon)
Oh! And one more thing! I just found this neat website for figuring out your kimono size. Under the waist measurement put in the part of your body that is widest (hips, bust or waist) to get better results: [link]
Still, it might be best to take some measurements for your arms and such just to be safe since everyone's proportions are different.
***Please note: I've left the lengths of most of the collar pieces blank for now because I'm still fidgiting with those.***

It is a nice tutorial, however, it is difficult to read. The print is very small and zooming in just turns everything into a blurry mess. Also, Black is the best color to use when making something other people have to read.
I could guess as to most of what I was reading, however, I could not make out what that last part said, about the body lining length in the yellow print. Something about AC/AD - ? cm. Is it 40, 50, or 90 cm?

I'm not sure if you tried it, but try hitting the download button and then zooming in. Β The text is quite clear to me. Β The colour coding is simply to match the measuring instructions with the parts of the kimono. Β I believe the section you're looking at reads: Β
"Pieces UC and UD - (body)
Width - bolt width
Length - length of AC/AD minus 90cm
(sample measurements = 30cm X 255cm"
Hope that helps!

Yes, that was the part I was having trouble reading, thank you. I did try what you suggested but it didn't help so I tried downloading it to see if there was any deference and there was. It made a huge difference and the whole picture blew up so I can see it clearly now. I know the picture is color coated to match the instructions and its a great system, I use it myself. But for reading small print, dark colors work the best. I would've gone with aΒ purple or green instead of yellow. I think you're doing a good job other than that and I hope to read the rest of the tutorials you create. Best of luck.

I absolutely love your kimono tutorial. I want to make a yukata for this summer. I was wondering if you knew of any good resources on sewing one step by step?

Thanks! Β Unfortunately, there aren't many resources available in the west that show how to sew kimono correctly. Β I've heard people give John Marshall's book good reviews, but I've never actually tried it myself: Β www.johnmarshall.to/6-resume.hβ¦

Just letting you know that it is still being used.

I don't quite understand the 3 parts of the collar, does someone else?Β is it AH is the outer collar, AG is the inner collar? and UG is what? like a interlining? Or is it AH is the outer collar, UG is the inner collar, and AG gets cut in half and added onto AH as an extension?

can you post the other parts on how to sew a kimono? i really want to make one.
oh, and if i want to make a traditional hikizuri-style kimono, what should i do? how long should the bolt be? how long should the sleeves be if i want to make a furisode? and do you know any other websites besides ichiroya?
sorry for all of these questions, but i really want to make my own kimono. ^_^'

I won't be posting the final parts for this tutorial since I don't have time to finish them, but everything you need to know is already there. This pattern is for a furisode, so the sleeves are long enough for your purposes. The additional length you'll require for hikizuri is menioned in part one. You'll need more than one standard kimono bolt to make a hikizuri - especially if it's going to be a furisode.
There's lots of kimono making information in the forums of this website: www.immortalgeisha.com

This is probably an odd question, but I want to make a Hikizuri. Does this mean I just pick the appropriate kimono to make and add 30 cm to the length of the kimono? Or is it not that simple?
π: 0 β©: 1
Kurokami-Kanzashi In reply to bibanan [2012-08-24 14:18:56 +0000 UTC]
Hikizuri are constructed a bit differently than normal kimono, so not exactly. However, if you're just using it for costuming purposes, adding 30 cm all around (so actually 60cm to each body piece aside from the front extensions) will do the trick. I've discussed the construction differences quite a bit in the hikizuri listings thread on IG.

Nice tutorial, but i have a question, if i would like the kimono long sleeved, what pieces should i modify, other than AA and AB`s length... ?
π: 0 β©: 1
Kurokami-Kanzashi In reply to SatanRo666 [2012-08-24 14:19:44 +0000 UTC]
This pattern is for a long sleeved kimono. Kimono sleeves generally only get shorter than this.

I just wanted to thank you for a very good tutorial on cutting and measuring the parts of a kimono. I ventured into making my first one for fun ([link] ) . Being a seamstress, it was easy enough to figure out the construction. I kind of fudged the collar length based on other tutorials and pictures of real kimono. It was a fun experience and very different from my usual patterning methods. Thanks again for the very helpful information!

I don't understand the measurements. Bolt width makes sense (the the width of the fabric as you 've bought it), but does 2 x 115 (for example) mean to cut 2 pieces or to double the measurement?
π: 0 β©: 1
Kurokami-Kanzashi In reply to MalteseLizzieMcGee [2010-12-18 03:06:25 +0000 UTC]
2 X 115 means double the measurement 115cm to 230cm. There are no shoulder seams on kimono, so you don't cut two pieces of fabric to make one sleeve.

Its what fabric comes on, when you go to the fabric store to pick out fabric it either comes on a bolt or in a roll. A bolt is smaller than a roll but still pretty big. its size also depends on how wide the fabric is or how long its length.
