I followed this using GIMP and a mouse, and this is the product: [link]
I couldn't find a way to "sharpen edges" in GIMP, although there was a "sharpen" tool, it didn't seem like it was doing anything helpful, so I didn't use it.
Anyways, good tutorial, and possible Ruby nuzlocke in the near future if I don't quit right after starting like most of my projects.

Cool tutorial.
Do you use photoshop elements or CS? I use elements and I looked for the Sharpen thing in Filter but I didn't see it. Do you have to download it or something? Or is it just a CS photoshop option? -feels noobish asking-

I use CS ;w;
The sharpen step is not a required step...I just do it to make the lineart sharper XD

Aw, drat. Thanks anyway! I figured that it would make my lineart look nicer, but oh well. I'll definitely try this shading style though.

when you do that, you can't use black or too saturated colors, because it really messes them up.
try a grey 50%.

i bow down to you!!!! *bows down* it must take you soooooooooo long to do one picture!!
lol i feel so bad cos with me, (good old fashioned pen on paper) i do about 10mins of doodling quick rough notes for pics, jokes, or speech, then about 30mins for doing the proper ruff scetch, then 30mins outlining and adding speech, and then fineally colouring in about what 10mins??? :S
if i really tred harder i should add shadows, but i already suck at getting body proportions right i know i'd screw up the shadowing lol XD
hahaha as for background well... pfft. its minaly white
anyways i just realised you have way too much time on your hands to even glance at this comment, so ill leave it with a happy wooooo your AWESOME!!!!

it also works for white to add highlights, and i do it with red when my characters blush ^_^

Sandwhisper In reply to Rndm-nm [2013-08-22 14:25:05 +0000 UTC]
True. By this time I've started working with using different colors to shade, be it a darker color of the base or a completely different (but complementary) color. It comes out pretty interesting sometimes.

Humm... I've never thought about using black on a seperate layer and turning down the opactiy... I'll have to be sure to give that a shot
Even though, y'know, I've mainly been doing lineless lately, and I use SAI rather that PS
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
ky-nim In reply to Kasupop [2011-05-20 17:09:12 +0000 UTC]
I dont have SAI so I guess I cannot quite work that.
My art is very lineart based - fanart-wise that is - so I guess this might not be as helpful to you, haha;;

lydario In reply to ??? [2011-05-20 16:48:52 +0000 UTC]
I might suggest using a more blue tone for the shaded parts, like a dark indigo. Black serves the purpose, and though this is simply a tutorial, you may want to add some suggestion of using other colors as there may be some people who will obly see this tutorial, and use the techniques for different purposes... and may use black in their shadows. It's not the end of the world, but shadows irl are never black, unless there is absolutely no light, and with the warmth of the sun's light (especially outside) you'll get a contrasting shade of blue for shadows. It's legit!

ky-nim In reply to lydario [2011-05-20 17:01:09 +0000 UTC]
haha I know. I use dark blue in some of the works, but for most fanart I just settle for a simple black XD
