Description
I just finished a new battle background for mountains.I wanted to test it out so I did this.
Personally, I think this is awesome, it's such a shame Nintendo wont use proper battle backgrounds.
Hope you like! Turtwig and Bastiodon rule btw.
I did NOT make the pokemon sprites/animations. Nintendo did. Credits to Jefelin for the rips.

True, but the chances of that are very slim. Gamefreak doesnt like changing stuff like that.

It would be so cool if battles were like this!
Are you going to make more of these for the other areas?

While I totally agree with you and love your work, I totally think battles should be played like this: [link]

actually I agree that's awesome! I mean the base that nintendo uses for the battle's was okay for the start of pokemon, but a later version this is would have been a really cool change

Yeah I know, its fine to start off like that but 20 years later or something you'd think they would have done something new?

Frozenglasstiger In reply to Kyle-Dove [2010-12-25 03:48:20 +0000 UTC]
absolutely, I mean there's nothing wrong with working with a formula that works, in many cases an upgrade will catch on. some people are pricks and don't want things to change. XD I think it's awesome and would go over great.

Wrong, Black/White should be like Colosseum by now. The DS is WAY powerful enough to support it. Also the new pokemon are absolute shit house so I won't even be pirating b/w

No, this is how Diamond/Pearl should of been. ( Great artwork, kudos) But yeah i was reading an article on BW and the author was like " It's nice to see the pokemon series the way it should of looked 6 years ago" and it's so true. Gamefreak is an amazingly lazy developing who essentially has made baby step changes to tired gaming formula yet charges $80 for the complete package. It's a ripoff. I rly don't know if i should get BW...( i held out on the last Gen and got Platinum, and was shockingly disappointed how it was the EXACT same gaming experience i had over a decade ago when i was seven.

Well that's definitely true haha. They do seem to drag their heels on any changes...I guess they just stick to that "if it's broken don't fix it" ethos? It's really dissapointing to be honest.

This really is what they should have done. It looks so much better than their sad attempts at battle backgrounds.
I'm hoping for fully 3D backgrounds *IF* they make another PokΓ©mon game for the 3DS that they are coming out with.

Looks awesome as always, even on my iPhone. But with all of this complaining about it not being in B/W, you're all forgetting one thing: it has to be rubbish in some ways. Otherwise the new version they release next year with minor differences wouldn't be as good.

Yeah but battle backgrounds have ALWAYS been rubbish. I'm still waiting for them to make a nice change to it.

PeekyChew In reply to Manzhanz [2010-12-24 16:32:23 +0000 UTC]
I'm not. They've always kept obvious good things out, so they can release a new one with them in. Like D/P didn't have animations for the back sprites of PokΓ©mon, you couldn't change PokΓ©mon when the enemy was like you could in earlier games and you couldn't go up and down in the Poketech, just through them all. Those were all added in Platinum.

Hydrargirium [2010-12-24 12:18:23 +0000 UTC]
Yeah. The thing i hate most about B&W battle graphhics, btw, is not the lack of realistic backgrounds, but the 2x resolution of backsprites. The movement already makes pokΓ©mon pixel a little messed-up, doubling the sprites is purely madness.
Awesome background, btw. XD

PokemonTilesetStudio In reply to ??? [2010-12-24 11:51:11 +0000 UTC]
Such a 2D background doesn't allow for too much camera movement. So they decided to trade it for camera movements.
However, they could've created some 3D models like rocks, trees, etc. and placed it around the battlefield. They could've even used some tree, rock, etc. models they used for the overworld.
Why didn't they do it? Because they always used simple battlefields, so it was like tradition to them and they thought that noone gave a f*ck in the past, so why now?
π: 0 β©: 1
Kyle-Dove In reply to PokemonTilesetStudio [2010-12-24 17:10:15 +0000 UTC]
You can still do just as much camera movement. Basically make the background bigger than the screensize, that way the camera can pan around the image and also zoom in and out like BW does right now. Then take certain elements from it like the foreground and put them on separate layers that move at a different rate and it would look just as good if not even better. It would probably be even easier than doing it in 3D.

Zooming in would screw it up though, without vector graphics.

Kyle-Dove In reply to PokemonTilesetStudio [2010-12-26 01:54:58 +0000 UTC]
Yeah but they zoom in now and it screws that up haha. Take the backsprites that are zoomed in at double the size...

Just cos I love them both really and think they fit with the surroundings. I also like th contrast in size and think their colours suit the picture.

The pixel art is AWESOME, but maybe too much.
I'd highlight the parts where the PokΓ©mon are and shade the rest.

It would be less distracting, you know d:
