Flabbergasted! - Part FivePart 5 “Okay, that was… weird,” Cat muttered, rubbing her hands up her arms at the chill that seemed to settle with the darkness. “Great timing for a power surge, right?” She turned to Robbin with a nervous grin. “Because that’s what it was, right?” “Oh come on, Cat! That was definitely a ghost.” Robbin grabbed her lighter and started to relight the candles. The light illuminated their faces in a soft, orange glow. Robbin stared hard at the space next to Cat, but there was nothing. “What?” Cat demanded, looking over her shoulder“Nothing.” Robbin grinned. “I told you this would be the best Halloween ever!” “If it was a ghost,” Cat retorted, shooting a pointed look back at her girlfriend, “What the hell does ‘Fat’ mean? You’re the expert.” She made sure to keep her hands - and just about anything else - away from the Ouija board. Just as a precaution, she told herself. A precaution from what, she wasn’t willing to say just yet. “Maybe it didn’t finish what it was saying?” She scrunched up her face in thought and leaned back on her palms. “It could have been ‘father’ if it was trying to answer the question. Or maybe ‘fate.’ That sounds spooky.” She grabbed another handful of popcorn. “Either way. I think I’ve had enough of the supernatural for one night.” “What happened to ‘best Halloween ever?’” Cat snorted, grabbing some popcorn herself. “You’re normally not one to quit so soon.” “Halloween isn’t all about ghosts and goblins. It’s also about sweets.” She stuck a finger into Cat’s bowl of ice cream and licked it clean. “Besides. You saw that thing move on its own. I think we’ve settled it. Ghosts are real. Case closed.” “Both our hands were on it. Either one of us could’ve moved it.” Cat huffed again, chomping more popcorn even as the sight of Robbin’s fingers at work at the ice cream already had her craving more sweetness. She started to grab another handful but pulled back with a sigh, “I wish we could have gone trick-or-treating. Stupid virus.” “Maybe the rich lady has some candy somewhere.” Robbin grabbed a candle and stood. “Wanna go on a treasure hunt through this spooky old mansion?” “Well…” Cat started, chewing on her lip for a moment before she brushed off her jeans and got to her feet. “Alright… but don’t touch anything that looks expensive. She’d sue me out of my apartment if I break anything.” “Yeah yeah. I’ll try not to burn the place down.” Robbin shot a quick glance back at the board. She was sure that neither of them had been touching the board when the planchette had moved from A to T, but saying that out loud wasn’t something she was ready to do. That combined with what she thought she’d seen before the lights had gone out… No, it was better to leave it alone for now. “Okay, this is your treasure hunt, where to first?” Cat asked, rubbing her arms again. Her shirt stopped short of her elbows and she hoped that the chill would go away once they got moving. “You might want to take her advice, dear,” a bored voice spoke from behind her, causing Cat to whirl around and then to look at Robbin, eyes wide.“Did you hear that?” “Of course she did.” Shimmering into existence right in front of Cat was… was a- “Didn’t anyone ever tell you?” The ghost asked, her teeth showing as her lazy smile widened into a grin. “This house is haunted.”
