Where do you get the polyester headbands from? I don't see any on ebay or amazon in bulk or anything like that.

Are there any other ways to cut the horns for the headband?
I was making my own the other day, and the knife slipped from the groove and sliced my thumb
Just wondering if there's another way I can do this because I kinda have a small phobia of exacto blades now

Thanks for this awesome tutorial! I'm close to starting my very first cosplay, and I'm making Gamzee horns; do you have any tips on attaching them to the headband/wig? I'm not sure about whether I should sew them to the wig or headband them. And how I would hide the headband under the wig. If you have any suggestions that would be awesome!

I've had people drill small holes through the horns and sewn them to the wig itself for extra stability. I, myself, have not tried such a method ; ; I usually just style the hair around the headband and horns to hide it the best I can ; ;

Oh, okay :')
Thanks for the advice!
/Seeing as I don't own a drill I think I'll just hide the headband

Thank you very much for these tutorials!
I've been looking everywhere to learn how to do this but noone else shows you step-by-step how to do it!
I do have one question though, most people I see use styrofoam or wires to hold the horns up and cut down on weight,is that necessary or do they generally hold up well?
I'm making a pair of Eridan,Feferi,and Gamzee horns so breaking under their own weight is something I've been worried about.

Would hot glue be able to be substituted? I have an awful lot of it. Also, I am attempting a pair of Gamzee horns; did the G horns you made provide any difficulty?
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
Lambentworld In reply to PangerInk [2012-02-25 02:37:08 +0000 UTC]
I usually use super glue because that with the model magic and polyester fibers actually bond FAST and hard to one another. Hot glue will take some time to dry and there's not always a good adhesive bond. You could TRY I suppose? But personally, I just use Super glue ;3 ;

Since the horns are made of model magic clay, is it really weigh heavy and difficult to move the head?
Also is paper clay a good alternative then model magic clay?
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
Lambentworld In reply to Kuuriku-sky-shore [2012-01-16 02:41:51 +0000 UTC]
Model magic isn't really all that heavy when it completely dries. It fills in it's own air pockets with expanding and feels almost weightless. The bigger they get the more awkward it is to move the head because of the height and yes, there is a weight to the larger ones.
I think the only comfortable way to make huge horns would be out of expanding foam which is pretty much just weightless.

I make my own horns but I was wondering how do you keep them round mine end up flattening. And since they are kinda big I can't just stand them up.

SkyeAnnabellaLeeRay In reply to Kirisempai [2013-05-31 11:10:57 +0000 UTC]
It depends on where you leave them to dry/harden. If you lay them on their sides, they will flatten. You can try hanging them from a huge sewing needle, or roatating them once every 10 to 15 minutes.

Usually just a thick acrylic that goes by "Folk Art".
Thank you. ^^

Thank you for the amazing tutorial, but I had a question. My horns keep on cracking relatively bad. As in, pretty thick/long cracks, and when I fill them with superglue and sandpaper them, the cracks still seem to show through the paint. Do you have any suggestions? Thanks!
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
Lambentworld In reply to kadoatiepuffs [2011-11-06 23:40:17 +0000 UTC]
Usually I just use the really thick acrylic paints [it's like, almost goo] and I add about 3-4 layers. So I let layer one dry. Add another. Dry. Add another and repeat. With some of them you aren't going to be able to remove the cracks COMPLETELY but when you take pictures they won't be prone to showing up either. You only notice them when you're eye to eye with the horns really ;3;

Did you try covering the cracks with the filler and not just filling it in? As well, have you tried wood filler?

Question. My main concern is getting the horns to stick. What kind of material are those headbands made of?
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
Lambentworld In reply to Aurorae-Phoenix [2011-11-04 22:39:34 +0000 UTC]
Polyester. Polyester and Model Magic with super glue seems to do really well with one another. If you have sort of a plastic-like headband, use a strip of paper or tissue paper between the model magic and the headband and glue those to both. It acts kind of like a middle conductor that forms a bond with the adhesive.

Where do you get the headbands? I was at Walmart and I searched for just plain black headbands and all they head was like frilly girly ones and those aren't very trollish.

Would the crayola air dry clay work for this??
👍: 0 ⏩: 2
GIMMEAWRISTBAND In reply to Michi-chi [2011-10-29 01:02:37 +0000 UTC]
Actually no, the air dry clay is heavy clay, which is hard to mold, and is messy.
Crayola Model Magic is lightweight, and is more like play-doh then clay.
Don't use air-dry clay unless you want your horns to be fragile as shit.
Use the Model Magic instead.

I was tempted to merely buy a set, but upon finding how much they cost...especially the ones I was looking at....I opted for the cheaper way of getting them. Making them myself. And I must say...this is going to be extremely helpful for when I do decide to make them. Thank you.

I've been struggling to find a way to make homestuck horns for awhile now, and with a con coming up, i've really been freaking out!
But, a friend sent me a link to this, and It looks like a MUCH easier method than the others I was finding! I just hope I have enough time to make all five sets! XD
Again, THANK YOU SOOOO MUCH!
