LaPurr In reply to ??? [2009-01-07 00:39:14 +0000 UTC]
I'm completely flabbergasted by anyone who doesn't believe in evolution but you know that here in the States that kind of thinking is everywhere.
I'm an avowed atheist. Not an agnostic, an atheist. As time goes on, I'm becoming a more vocal one to try and be at least one voice to counter the idiotic things I hear people say. You probably wouldn't be surprised to know what kind of responses I sometimes get. Around xmas, I was on the site for the newspaper in my area and decided to post in a blog about the holidays. I wrote that winter and spring solstice celebrations are thousands of years old and that xians ripped them off from pagans and pretty much all other cultures on the planet. These are some of the comments that were posted in response, with original grammar and spelling:
'Oh so since you and other all of a sudden come out and say these lies we are all supposed to believe them and we have believed what we have for generations? Think again bud!'
'We all have our opinions and it seems when one says theirs theres always sombody lese to argue. You read and believe your BOOKS and I will read and believe mine. When the end comes we will see whos BOOKS were true and which were false. Im not one to read a book and believe everything I read. Like some of you eggheads. I could seel you a popsicle in the north pole if I told you it would cure global warming which is also total b.s.'
'Christmas is a christian holiday(Merry CHRIST'S MASS). Don't like it, no one forced you to partake. I laugh at the MINORITY who think this day is just "another party day." When the "Real Reason is that it's Jesus Birthday Party." It's not your day!All the commercial crap aside, you're just appeasing your local businessman that whines because people didn't spend enough money! The same goes for Easter! It's not a spring thing, bunnies, eggs and another party day-it's a Christian celebration. If you partake in any of these holdays and you're a atheist, agnostic or whatever, you're just a plain hypocrite!'
'To All Christians.........
We don't need to include these pagans in our "circle of friends and family." We don't need to tolerate them. I personally have no friends that are atheist, agnostic, felons, pedophiles, or any of these diverse people. I know employers are "pushing diversity down our throats" but when the diversity can go "both ways" than I will be more accomadating. Till then, take your lifestyle down the road............As Christians, we are only asked to be tolerant of immoralistic people.'
That last one astonished me and I sent a note to the editor stating that it was a hateful remark. I also said that since they removed an earlier post to me about how I was trying to take away some of the last traditions of the 'white christian', they should remove this post as well. I told them that if any other group had been added to the list of 'diverse people' along the lines of blacks, muslims, gays, etc. they would have removed it immediately. I stated that atheists are one group that it's still just fine to hate.
The editors removed the comment.
I won't be quiet any more. I won't sit and listen to this crap and not respond. The rabid xians need to know that there are other points of view and that in the world at large, they are NOT the majority. There are about as many atheists/agnostics/no affiliation out there as there are muslims. (Which I also mentioned in one of my comments...and then asked if they were scared. )
Sorry for the rant. I'm getting madder and madder about fundmentalists every day.

I couldn't agree with you more, Kat, and those blog comments just beggar belief!
I guess I'm an atheist too, though to date it has never been something I felt I needed to put a "name" to, explain or justify to anyone. I have my own views and generally mind my own business whilst having the utmost respect for others who sincerely, and quietly, believe differently; my motto is "live and let live" and all that. However, I have recently found myself getting increasingly angry about just the sort of people you speak of and the prevalence of those who publicly go on about their religion (American Christians mostly), damnation, the denial of science, the hysterical intolerance and hatred of large groups of people who happen to be "different" and all sorts of wacky stuff that just goes against every single fibre of my being and is often deeply offensive to me yet at the same time laughable in its almost surreal ridiculousness. Yesterday morning I read someone's journal - I disagreed with every single statement on that page and was prompted to go and look for a journal stamp to somehow "counter" this insanity (which is how I found your stamp
). I had to restrain myself from leaving a comment because it would have come out all wrong ("never write in anger" has always served me well - better a cool, rational response or none at all, in my view).
My ruminations could go on at length too but I don't want to blot your comment area by saying too much and provoking a rabid response from someone, just know that I feel your rage and that you are not alone!

Chris, the only reason I wrote what I did is because I just knew that your beliefs were in line with mine.
I, like you, don't post my views on anyone's rabidly (or even not-so-rabid) xian journal and have asked that same respect when I post journals with anti-theist quotes/themes. I'm also fairly gentle (yes, I can be gentle...) when I speak my mind to xians in person...but I speak it nonetheless and don't back down.
What I find laughable about those blog comments is that the authors can't see the irony in their own statements or the inconsistencies in their thinking. There is no rationality to what they wrote or how these people think.
I could go on at length as well but won't...even though it's my dev, damn it...

I use this on my page even though I'm sure eventually somebody well get all bent out of shape of course they'll probably be so bent out of shape about my yaoi that they won't even notice the fish stamp... Amazingly nobody has flamed me yet for my yaoi. Not that I would care, likely I'd roast a marshmallow and laugh at them but still.
I'm not an atheist though, agnostic yes but I'm sure a lot of people will take it that way.

You probably don't even know where the 'fish' symbol comes from so I wouldn't get all offended if I were you.

HEY! It's not as bad as the Wiccan fish. See, the Darwin fish is [sort of] clever because it makes sense. Whereas unlike Darwinism or Christianity, a fish with legs sitting on a broomstick makes NO SENSE whatsoever. *shakes head at the Wiccan fish* But if you ignore the reference to where they got the idea, it's not as bad as it seems.
