At school, if you say "I believe in evolution" People automatically start saying "She doesn't believe in God!" And I haven't found 2 people other that believes in evolution in my school yet. You can believe in God while believing in science too! *favs*

Yes, for some bizarre reason people equate evolution with atheism, ignoring the fact that most Christians world wide accept evolution, just not in America for some reason.

See, fundamentalists only leave two options when shown evolution:

Either God lied/is fake to them, or evolution is false.

There perception has no depth!

yes you can but that said you're unlikely to convince somebody else of that after all I know christians who claim that scientist made up dinosaurs... *shakes here head*

I've heard of Christians who wouldn't fly because they think it's trespassing on Gods domain.

and there are those who won't see a doctor because if god wants them to die then they should just die.

Yes it is, christian scientist are a tad odd. There are some places where it's considered child abuse not to take the kid in to see the doctor and they will actually fight it on grounds of religious freedom.

My theory... brainwashing.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

bubbles-gal119 In reply to KiterieAine [2008-10-19 16:34:29 +0000 UTC]

but one person would have to believe that so he would want to brainwash others....

KiterieAine In reply to bubbles-gal119 [2008-10-19 16:42:15 +0000 UTC]

It's complicated but comes down to one person really fucks up their life and wants things to be different so swings as far away from the failure as possible and comes up with the really out there solution and is utterly convinced it will work because doing the opposite didn't. For example my mom drank and used for years of her life, shacked up with guys who were assholes and didn't attend church like she was raised to she takes A(herself) minus B(church) and = C(bad person-how she feels about herself not necessarily reality) and so goes from not attending church to frantically obsessed with it in hopes that it will fix her. She doesn't approach it logically because of shame. So then she thinks that's the cure because her life gets better so she goes even more and obsesses more and then doesn't understand why it's not helping anymore... assumes she must not be trying hard enough and ends up feeling like crap because she can't live up to her expectations. When in reality she had the problem wrong it should have been A(herself) + B(alcohol) = C(not being able to make good judgements). Well it's complicated but it basically is a matter of bad math and overreaction.

everyone in my family believes in god, but we're all really lose about it. I have to practically tape my mouth shut at church (I didn't once and voiced my opinion on evolution and now a sunday school teacher hates me). My extended family though... My grandma tried to take away my my stuff because she said it was unholy/inappropriate for a "young lady" like myself. I wouldn't let her though.

KiterieAine In reply to bubbles-gal119 [2008-10-23 13:20:17 +0000 UTC]

I never did learn to keep my mouth shut, oddly I'm still seen as the cute little girl they remember. But I think even the old women remember despite what I may believe or not believe community and family are important to me. I'm still the one who is down there helping to set up the dinner or staying to clean up. Little things like that are not forgotten. And I also don't raise my voice and I smile even when I'm arguing with a self righteous pasture who is tells stories about how muslims are evil. I actually got up in the middle of his story and pointedly left and then told him I wouldn't be attending that church and neither would my daughter so long as he was there. He's no longer there and the pasture who was there when I was a kid is the temp. So when I or my daughter visit we go. I trust him, I may not agree with him on everything but he's a man of honor. I've learned that much. It doesn't matter if you agree on everything if you respect each other. And he's the one who taught me that.

yikes.
i just got up in the middle of Sunday school when I was little and talked about how evolution was a much more likely theory than creation. Got kicked out
