let me put it this way: my final results in high school were far below what is needed to pass.
but because I was good at languages and was gonna study languages at the university they decided to give me my degree instead of having me redo the whole year

AH! This pamphlets are extraordinary! Especially since I had a teacher who tried to distract the supervisors with her very short gown, and she almost looked like that unicorn

I don't know where I was, how old are you, sir ? or is that a too personal question

I'm 38. When I was studying, you were probably playing Pokèmon or one of those crazy things you kids do when you're not smoking crystal meth.

laresistance In reply to The-Mirrorball-Man [2011-11-23 18:16:07 +0000 UTC]
haha, nooo, no PokΓ©mon. I was a huge star wars nerd. at a certain moment I was also painting little toy soldiers. from that period it's mostly tex avery, ren and stimpy and the simpsons.
when you were studying I was already drawing, though. and building domino-effect kinda stuff with everything in my room. reading Roald Dahl, lots of comic books, "where's waldo", watching horror movies that scared me shitless, but still fascinated me. making stuff out of lego mostly and building sandcastles on holiday in Spain. what did you do in those days ?

... meanwhile, I was living through bleak times. My father had just died and though I didn't perceive it back then, grief had left me emotionally numb and scarred, college proved to be a colossal waste of time, so did military service and women showed no interest in me whatsoever. Some of the problems I'm still facing today were born back then. It's the part of my life where everything went completely off the rails.
I started drawing comic strips around these times, though, and that was a lot of fun. I came up with my Tweet-Tweet character, which can't be a coincidence. I spent quite a lot of time playing tabletop role-playing games. And that's also when I spent five months in Boston, of which I have very fond memories.

ow damn, man, I'm sorry for that. I have to say comics and drawing in general helped me a lot in darker times.
It can help to "draw off" certain things, I think. I don't know if you feel like it, but the story of your life sounds like it would be strong in an autobiographical comic.
take care, man !

The-Mirrorball-Man In reply to laresistance [2011-11-24 16:22:56 +0000 UTC]
Thank you! I'm much better now. I mean, I'm still nowhere near where I hope to be, but I'm getting there.
And I made an autobiographical comic (strip), it's called "My Life in Freefall ", which eventually turned into "My Life in Flux", itself a semi-autobiographical comic strip.

yeah and those are good, but I mean like a longer story. Like the comic books "epileptic" or "blankets" or even "Jimmy Corrigan".
it could be something really powerful. But it's just an idea of course . Great to hear you're much better, man. Progress is the key !

The-Mirrorball-Man In reply to laresistance [2011-11-24 19:15:06 +0000 UTC]
Heh. "Blankets" is almost 600 pages long. I'd be lucky if I ever get an 8-page comic story done!
π: 0 β©: 1
laresistance In reply to The-Mirrorball-Man [2011-11-25 11:45:21 +0000 UTC]
point taken ! I don't think I could focus that long on one project either. but 8 sounds like a good challenge already
I was lucky enough to meet Craig Thompson 3 weeks ago in Belgium. What a great humble man. I shook his hand and secretly hoped to get some of his drawing vibes. not much so far

oh crap, that's true ! do you think really good comic strip authors are organisms that just suck out all the power from other artists and become big and powerful that way ? could be an idea for a comic

oh sweet, I also haven't got a driver's license yet.
I know it's handy, but I just get everywhere I want in Belgium by bike or public transport. driving is hell here, actually. way too much traffic.

right now i live in a very desolete area with great distances of gritroads and forests and mountains, and its cold and dark, right now it is not too good to travel by bike, i did not ever want to have a driver's licence before but now i kind of need it to get other kinds of jobs than the one i have...
otherwise i love the bike...

thx, man ! I love your philosophical, critical thoughts and your view on life. your struggle for improvement. RESPECT, man !
this was done really quickly. I wanna tackle longer stuff, but I have a problem with concentration. I think it's society's fast rythm that makes me jump from one idea to the next and not focus on one. I'm working on several supersecret projects and hope to get them going. I'm also gonna take another look at your writings for our collab ! would be cool to get that going
