Description
Assignment based on a hypothetical article about robot robin toys on sale in Japan. It's supposed to be for a bird watcher's magazine, so I emphasized the natural features of the Japanese robin, instead of designing a product as it would actually look. Watercolor, colored pencil and gouache.You may not use this artwork in any form unless you have my permission. If you wish to use it as a tattoo, I must be paid a creative fee. This image is copyrighted.

I myself prefer the Oriental robin (that's the name I got from wikipedia, it's called doel bird in my native language), but Japanese robins are indeed cute!

I like how there's all the nature stuff and then the robin has a windup key on its back and lots of gears inside of it. It just seems like a beautifully contrasting picture where yet all the elements fit together like they're the same and not contrasting.

Great picture: love the continuity of tone through the flowers, background and robin, nothing jarrs, it all blends together smoothly. Beautiful concept - have read novels set in Kublai-Khan's China where the authors talk of wondrous mechanical toys; quite possibly an historical truth in it somewhere, so it seems apt your picture has a Far-Eastern theme to it
