Description A Study in Paper No. 5: Sherlock & John

They're cut as nested silhouettes from the same bit of paper.

Sherlock is just over 6.5" high.

ETA: Re-done version in cardstock (much sturdier), plus a link to my Etsy: [link]

ETA 2: later commissioned the lineart for this [link] awesome tattoo.

Aw, thanks for the kind words! There are so many possibilities with paper and every time I make something--even if it doesn't work out--I learn something and get ideas for more. You should definitely give it a go!

Thank you! I was originally planning a different project with a single silhouette, until it occurred to me that I could do two, if only I could make sure they fit...

So, I have to ask, because I did see in some your other "Study in"s that you included the tool in the photo... do you just use an exacto-knife to cut these out? Because the designs are brilliant, yes, but so are the edges in all of your work! It's... gah, it leaves me incomprehensible, how cool this is.

👍: 0 ⏩: 2

ldhenson In reply to BattreComtois [2010-12-04 04:24:12 +0000 UTC]

Oh, and for small round holes, like the dice dots here [link] , that's done with a screwdriver. I don't have a hole punch.

👍: 0 ⏩: 0

ldhenson In reply to BattreComtois [2010-12-04 04:19:26 +0000 UTC]

Thanks for the kind words!

Yes, I use an exacto...two, actually, the pink one and a slightly larger one whose blade seems to stay sharp longer. I figured people have had enough of it

Cutting these designs is interesting, because they're all one piece so if I make even one wrong cut, the whole thing has to go. I could make it easier on myself if I didn't stick to the "one piece" rule, but where would be the fun in that?

Another awesome, AWESOME piece. How do you come up with these? It requires a level of 3D thinking I can't even comprehend

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

ldhenson In reply to GeniusBee [2010-12-04 04:13:15 +0000 UTC]

Thanks so much! When inspiration strikes, it's fun to fold and unfold them in my head as I'm designing them. (Which is fine if inspiration strikes while I'm taking the bus...not so good when I'm meant to be working.)

GeniusBee In reply to ldhenson [2010-12-07 03:24:08 +0000 UTC]

That's an amazing ability to have! I'm really hoping to get more into paper crafting when I start my art major

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

ldhenson In reply to GeniusBee [2010-12-08 23:12:45 +0000 UTC]

The tricky part is that even though a fold seems to "work" in my head, sometimes when I draw it out I discover that two parts of the pattern overlap or maybe the pattern's too large for the paper (big problems since I only use single pieces of paper). So then I have to come up with alternate methods.

Good luck with the art studies!
