Description
Godzilla / ゴジラZBrush 4, Photoshop CS4, Vue 8, Photography
Sculpting Approx 40-60 hours, Photoshop works 10-12 hrs
The model used here is the same as used from ([link] ) the one affectionately nicknamed Fatzilla or Lardzilla by some. This presentation is created to give the design a closer look, where as the one in the link is part of my fan art series monster profiles.
The Godzilla character has changed over the years, from being man made disaster to an environmental friendly monster. From an anti hero to saviour of earth. From being creature who became a father figure to becoming a supernatural creature who is brought to life by angered spirits.
His appearance has also changed but he's always retained the distinct mutated heavily scaled dinosaur look with spiky dorsal fins (or spines) and a long powerful tail.
His size has fluctuated over the years from 50m tall to becoming 100m then 55 then back up to 100. His abilities and weaknesses have also varied over time.
As an artist, i took the freedom to design and create my version of this popular Japanese iconic monster, but also keeping the key characteristics that make a Godzilla design.
The design is heavily inspired from the Heisei Godzilla Suit (1990s). It is the Godzilla that i grew up with, as an artist. I admired his size, power, his unique proportions, the super long heavy tail (that constantly moves as if it had its own mind, perhaps its his 2nd brain (GvsMGII)), the facial expressions...The texture and armor is influenced from crocodilians and The Millennium G-Suit (2000), a sea-monster inspired creature design. The anatomical base structure is heavily drawn from theropod fossils, as Godzilla is a dinosaur. I have deliberately chosen to avoid the 'humanoid' rubber dinosaur suit direction that we are all so familiar and accustomed to, which the Japanese are the pioneers and ultimate masters of the daikaiju genre.
As always I appreciate your time and effort taken in leaving any comments and criticisms.

beautifully done! its like a combination of the 98 american zilla blended with the japanese godzilla. The body design is very nice and very believable unlike some of the renders I've seen. Love the blended head design as well. The only thing that bothers me are the legs. I know you were aiming for a stocky [yet powerful] version of godzilla but the legs just appear too short for him to be able to really walk. It have this mental image of him waddling around like rodger from american dad. If the legs were a little longer I'd say he would be perfect.

Godzilla just loves to pimp-slap his opponents with his tail, doesn't he? xD
Lovely reference~ I like more sleek-style designs, which is probably why his bulkyness doesn't appeal to me, but I do like his stream-line-like features, and it's more reptilian approach.

Nah, he looks a little too fat. Granted Godzilla was always a little hip-heavy, but what I think the franchise needs is a leaner, faster Godzilla, one that can rely a little more on speed rather than raw firepower. I’m not saying that’s a bad thing, I’m just saying that toning down on the bulk a little would do some good.

i think i put too much pictures of the long range blasting, but does a lot of biting and tail smashing. this godzilla is actually fast, like marvel's juggernaut.
thanks for the comment

Oh Thank You, but I am truly floored with how well you have captured the essence of Gojira and yet have such a personalized aesthetic imputed.
I see I may indeed partake in illustrating my versions of the Kaiju verse.

I'm unfortunately unable to write a true critique due to the fact I don't have a Premium membership, but I will give my opinion as if it were an official critique. take it as you see it. I hope everyone will agree it is fair.
This redesign is impressive, to say the least. There are elements that really embody Godzilla in this design, and it's a compromise that I am pleased to say does justice to all the best features of the various 'Godzillas' that appeared over the decades. I'll judge it in order from head to tail, as that's the simplest way to keep it organised.
The head is very well done, design-wise. It carries a distinct ferocity that reminds me a lot of the Heisei era Godzilla. the more saurian look of the head is an improvement i find very well applied in the design. My only qualms with it are that it seems a tiny bit too small for the creature. Godzilla has a relatively small head generally, I agree. But here, it needs to be a bit larger to be of some practical use as anything other than a turret for his atomic breath. the teeth are the perfect blend between lion-like and crocodillian to depict the best of both worlds, an important trait if you want to show the power and ferocity in the monster's face, which is, as we all know, the most expressive part of a creature. the eyes are also impressive, with the very light orange tint showing the best of both the American Godzilla design and the bright white, emotionless eyes of the GMK Godzilla, along with the horrific nature that that particular incarnation had.
The neck and chest are exceptionally well done, and embody a sense of majesty that is rare but always highly valued in Godzilla whenever he's depicted [which is one of the reasons for the popularity of the Heisei era Godzilla designs]. While most redesigns depict him as a beast, this design depicts him as more. a KING amongst monsters, as is his title. the armour does well to depict the sheer invulnerability of Godzilla, emanating a sense of power that I find unfortunately rare amongst fan designs. it also shows an interesting lean towards what resembles solidified magma, particularly that found on the ocean floor, which I think is a nice touch as it depicts Godzilla's two most frequented elements.
The arms, I believe, could be slightly larger, and the hands facing inwards, palms towards eachother, rather than downwards [unless you want to give the impression that Godzilla is quadrupedal and only rears up on his hind legs occasionally], to more accurately depict the appearance of a predator. a hunter.
I'm pleased with how you depicted the legs and general anatomy, as it perfectly combines the old-school Godzilla and the American design, which, though flimsy and weak looking, had a lot of good details in there that really added to the appearance.
Finally, I come to the tail. I cannot stress how important a well designed tail is for Godzilla. it is one of his most dominant physical features. it can make or break the appearance. and you have done it almost perfectly. the plated look is impressive, and the flattened look does a lot for his water-dwelling nature. the length is well done, and the way it gradually tapers does a good job of depicting the natural nature under that monstrous mutant appearance. My only suggestion is that you could continue the tail tip until it reaches half the width of the current tail tip. aside from that, and the points I've mentioned above, it's perfect.

Thanks for taking time for this critique, which i think is fair.
It was a challenge to redesign this Godzilla. This particular design, sticks with the art direction and style of my fan art series 'Kaiju Shoshingeki 2' which is to veer away with the traditional kaiju look and still looking fantastic (as in unreal), but keeping with the character(s) (based on how i see each kaiju), which was the challenge.
Regarding the head, i did draw a study with a bigger head, but then I had to decide which proportion should i base the design from; one that is closer to a theropods or one which is like the heisei proportion(small head big body), and ive decided to stick with the heisei proportion.
Good thoughts on the hands (palms facing...).
i think larger arms fit a godzilla standing up right, while smaller fit more a godzilla with a tyranosaur stance, but i am flexible with the idea of a slightly longer arms. in this design, G wont do punches and body slams, but will have more bite and grab attacks, even with a small but powerful jaw/head.
thanks again. by reading your comment, i felt like i have successfully communicated as an artist, what i wanted to portray.
cheers man. blessings.
