Description Godzilla / ゴジラ

ZBrush 4, Photoshop CS4, Vue 8, Photography
Sculpting Approx 40-60 hours, Photoshop works 10-12 hrs

The model used here is the same as used from ([link] ) the one affectionately nicknamed Fatzilla or Lardzilla by some. This presentation is created to give the design a closer look, where as the one in the link is part of my fan art series monster profiles.

The Godzilla character has changed over the years, from being man made disaster to an environmental friendly monster. From an anti hero to saviour of earth. From being creature who became a father figure to becoming a supernatural creature who is brought to life by angered spirits.
His appearance has also changed but he's always retained the distinct mutated heavily scaled dinosaur look with spiky dorsal fins (or spines) and a long powerful tail.
His size has fluctuated over the years from 50m tall to becoming 100m then 55 then back up to 100. His abilities and weaknesses have also varied over time.

As an artist, i took the freedom to design and create my version of this popular Japanese iconic monster, but also keeping the key characteristics that make a Godzilla design.

The design is heavily inspired from the Heisei Godzilla Suit (1990s). It is the Godzilla that i grew up with, as an artist. I admired his size, power, his unique proportions, the super long heavy tail (that constantly moves as if it had its own mind, perhaps its his 2nd brain (GvsMGII)), the facial expressions...The texture and armor is influenced from crocodilians and The Millennium G-Suit (2000), a sea-monster inspired creature design. The anatomical base structure is heavily drawn from theropod fossils, as Godzilla is a dinosaur. I have deliberately chosen to avoid the 'humanoid' rubber dinosaur suit direction that we are all so familiar and accustomed to, which the Japanese are the pioneers and ultimate masters of the daikaiju genre.

As always I appreciate your time and effort taken in leaving any comments and criticisms.

Very Nice. I went from just liking the design to loving it. Until they show us what the new Godzilla looks like, this will be the new interpretation for me.

Hi: I just want to say you did at excellent job! it looks awsome!!!!!
I always wanted to see Godzilla made in zbrush really!
and well........... I really don't like to be a critic I m (really sorry)
but i will have to critic the ("spinal stance") I found it to horizontal
if you could make it just a little more (semi-vertical) so he could use his hands
again sorry for the critic really I am
Oh! and keep up the good work man Awsome!!!!!

thanks.

no worries, i have to accept criticisms. its good for artist growth
This version can be semi-vertical when standing, but will only be almost horizontal when running.

I didn't expect a second take at this bizzarely contriversal design but I appreciate a better look at the head from more angles. I think the idea of this design being 'fat' is something of snappy conclusion. As you said, its based primarily on the Heisei Godzilla in terms of inspiration with textures from the Shisei or millenium era mixed in. This is what a Godzilla looks like when it doesn't have to conform to the human body. While I agree that for a 'iconic Goji' the arms are too small and it would never be capable of the type of locomotive diversity the Showa did; this is not an 'iconic Goji' design, it is a modified and modern Heisei design with artistic license.

The size of the chest and body do not bother me because I can see the reasoning. The Heisei Godzilla faught primarily with body checks, tail swipes, bites, and an incredible amount of beam spam. It's arms really didn't do all that much aside from a few scenes in the last two films where it was the focus. It took its sweet time plodding over into melee and throughly enjoyed its ranged superiority. The nuclear pulse was a method of distancing itself from its opponents and getting into optimal blasting range again. Gotta understand that Godzilla is not a gorilla or a big cat. It doesn't swipe/push so much as pull, pulling is what dinosaur arms where meant to do anyway so they could latch onto prey and keep it from escaping the jaws which are the real threat. The barrel like chest on the design gives it an obvious means of having increased lung capacity, energy generation via the heart, and muscular control necessary to condense that energy into a beam. It also protects the body for those high impact collisions which are a mainstay of its arsenal. This design is also still streamlined and with a powerful tail, assets in the marine enviroments where Godzilla spends a majority of his time. The croc like armor along the tail also makes his most prominent melee weapon a punishing club of an appendage.

Now the original, the original Heisei was FAT. You literally had enormous puffy rolls of reptilian marshmallow enveloping its legs. It was a slow plodding mountain of a kaiju because it really had no other choice. If anything this design translates the literal blubber of its source into simple bulk. If anything I'd call it 'Stockyzilla' or 'Stoutzilla'. THIS...in the lower left corner

[link]

That is 'Fatzilla'.

With all that said, people should keep in mind that Godzilla is not simply a dinosaur that shoots lasers. He is a mutation and people designing him should remember that regardless of how one goes about rearranging his iconic traits. He stopped being simply 'a dinosaur' the second the bomb touched him. He is a monster even among his own species and thus is supposed to deviate in terms of anatomy. Increased manual dexerity in the arms and a looming upright posture are among the deviations that set him apart. Despite this, the design is not a catastrophic failure because it is unique. It's different from the source material and at the same time is not a T-rex with butcher knifes taped to its back that can breath fire (a conclusion that is equally uninspired). If you were to put this design in a silhouette lineup with a bunch of other designs, you would be able to recognize it. The legs don't look uncharacteristically brittle either and it has fairly large feet. So it's actually pretty damn stable. As much as the Heisei is lauded for its stability, the suit fell over more times than can be counted.

TL;DR, It's a unique Godzilla design

Thanks Ren.

This presentation was supposed to be posted together with the first piece.

Well written and fair. You have mentioned a lot of things that i wanted to say and failed to mention, but i think you saw through the conceptual and creative processes.

Thanks for taking time writing this. Truly appreciate it.

Cheers.

You've gotten a lot of undue and nonconstructive flack over these last two entries and I couldn't stay mum on the subject any longer. Disliking the design for one reason or another is one thing but the close minded flaming without any attempt at giving detailed reasoning or creative solutions is ridiculess. To my knowledge it's was even dragged through the mud clear over at the Toho Kingdom Forums.

That isn't the kind of environment I think the fandom should be fostering. All the paranoia surrounding a movie that doesn't even have a trailer yet and recent 'trends' as it were, have formed something of an elitist lynch mob mentality in some of the crusty old farts around here and I apologize for that. They're scared that the standard will change again like it did with KaijuSamurai's Neo design and any new blood entering the fandom will get 'the wrong idea'.

While I have my own specific standards for what makes a 'Gojira', I also support people who can give a truly unique take to the character without losing what made it a Daikaiju in the first place. In that you have largely succeeded, especially where the Heisei is concerned. The look for your Godzilla is in theme with the rest of the series which is a wonderful principle called 'unity'. It's something all suits of a particular eiga had and it proves itself viable even in homage kaijuverses like this one. They should have expected something like this the second they laid their eyes on Anguirus.

nice, but i think larger arms would do him good. keeping the same posture otherwise and having arms that go a little closer to the ground would be a big improvement. don't get me wrong, i love the rest of the design! the crocodile skin and the obvious strength and power of the beast is great! I would love to see you do biollante. that was not a request, that was an order. would a pretty please help my chances? lol

im not sure about the hands closer to the ground when not in motion, but the hands go really close to the ground when he does a running charge or just simply when he runs.

biollante, wasnt in my list but very possible. the biolante design is one of my fave creature designs of all time (top 10).
i will consider....

WOW dude he looks even more awesome!! i really love these new takes on him, they really give you a feeling of his mass, power, and how he moves. i still truly love this design. going the dinosaur route with your design was definitely the right choice despite the harsh publicity. he just looks simply awesome. every day that goes by i fall more in love with your redesign of him and this piece was really a treat. these images of him look so realistic, hell these models look better than the ones they use in the games. i would love to play a game using your model of him and some of the other characters truly phenomenal job dude

I still don't know why people call him Lard/Fatzilla. its such and insult tp his awesome design. if i remember Heisei Godzilla was a sumo wrestler in a spacesuit and i didn't see any complaining. yours is essentially the same thing, but more awesome and dino like.

Also in your bio you talked about the evolution of Godzilla both physically and emotionally. i can see your physical interpretation of him but how is his personality? is he the good/environmental type monster who like people? is he an anti-hero? is he a douche bag lol? what is he like?

Yeah, he would probably do that.

LDN-RDNT In reply to Groudan383 [2011-03-09 21:43:14 +0000 UTC]

like warm blooded beasts, when they fight or move. like a gorilla or a bear, more active with gnarls.. unlike cold blooded animals, where they only have a burst of movement then they have to rest and stay still to conserve energy.

oops sorry, i think i didnt really answer your question about attitude...

id say this godzilla will be like a good bully, so dont get on his bad side...

What amazes me is the design over all. I like it, even though there are others who would look upon this and say this is a flop. I say different. The idea put into this work is rather inspiring, really. You are right in saying many fans are use to the "humanoid" rubber dino suit, and mking Godzilla look and feel more like what he should have been made is awesome. Godzilla is a Dinosau, why not give him the qualities of a dinosaur. So in short I like this design
