Description
Godzilla / ゴジラZBrush 4, Photoshop CS4, Vue 8, Photography
Sculpting Approx 40-60 hours, Photoshop works 10-12 hrs
The model used here is the same as used from ([link] ) the one affectionately nicknamed Fatzilla or Lardzilla by some. This presentation is created to give the design a closer look, where as the one in the link is part of my fan art series monster profiles.
The Godzilla character has changed over the years, from being man made disaster to an environmental friendly monster. From an anti hero to saviour of earth. From being creature who became a father figure to becoming a supernatural creature who is brought to life by angered spirits.
His appearance has also changed but he's always retained the distinct mutated heavily scaled dinosaur look with spiky dorsal fins (or spines) and a long powerful tail.
His size has fluctuated over the years from 50m tall to becoming 100m then 55 then back up to 100. His abilities and weaknesses have also varied over time.
As an artist, i took the freedom to design and create my version of this popular Japanese iconic monster, but also keeping the key characteristics that make a Godzilla design.
The design is heavily inspired from the Heisei Godzilla Suit (1990s). It is the Godzilla that i grew up with, as an artist. I admired his size, power, his unique proportions, the super long heavy tail (that constantly moves as if it had its own mind, perhaps its his 2nd brain (GvsMGII)), the facial expressions...The texture and armor is influenced from crocodilians and The Millennium G-Suit (2000), a sea-monster inspired creature design. The anatomical base structure is heavily drawn from theropod fossils, as Godzilla is a dinosaur. I have deliberately chosen to avoid the 'humanoid' rubber dinosaur suit direction that we are all so familiar and accustomed to, which the Japanese are the pioneers and ultimate masters of the daikaiju genre.
As always I appreciate your time and effort taken in leaving any comments and criticisms.

Better a fat dino than a skinny lizard, I say. Seeing it in action makes all the difference! I like how it's skin has a very rock-like appearance. That's how I imagine Godzilla to be! I'm afraid the upcoming film might try to over-science it and take away the fantasy. Good Job!

I too LOVE the Heisei series Godzilla, I enjoyed watching his movies all through middle and highschool
Anywho, I like his scales, dorsal spines, and face, very distinct yet still clearly Godzilla, reminds me a little of Millennium Godzilla with his spinier skin. However...His incredible bulk looks odd on his theropod based body & stance, like his belly nearly touches the ground (and goes down to his knees), or like his limbs are too tiny to support his weight. His arms are especially too short, normal theropods may have had tiny arms on average but Godzilla's are supposed to be longer and more muscular so he can grapple, grasp, and claw his enemies.
Its an interesting and cool design, but it still needs some work, in my opinion at least (not that I could ever draw anything nearly this good mind you, XD). Basically the only things I'd suggest changing are putting his arms and legs in proportion to the rest of his body or slimming him down, that or giving him a traditional Godzilla body stance so that it looks like he can support himself.

Well, the storylines didn't really challenge your brain a whole lot (most G flicks don't), although I had to watch G vs. Biollante and G vs. Destroyah a bunch to get everything out of them. My personal favorite from the 90's is the remake of Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla. Earlier I mentioned something about getting emotionally involved during a kaiju battle. Well, the battles in this movie are the ones that do it for me. I actually get chills, especially when Godzilla and Rodan have their first (and only) fight. The story itself is very entertaining too.
There's something about the mixture of that old classic feeling and a new edge that makes the Heisei Era so appealing to me.
But anyways, I'm glad you based your design on the 90's version.
Best Wishes to ya.

GvsMG ii is one of my faves as well. i like that one because theres too much action and there are more than 2 monsters involved. i like GvsKingGhidora too, even the flawful time traveling story didnt make sense, but its also full of special effects and elements that i like in a G movie.
i get the same chills especially after watching the movie(s) second or third time. my fave Heisei scenes are:
- when G defeats King Ghid first time esp the scene where he fired some atomic ray to KG and the middle head got chopped off...
- when G reversed or sent back the electro charges to Mecha G
- when G defeats mechag ii
- when G gets supercharged and fires his finishing upgraded heat ray to spaceG.
and so much more...
its a shame where i live and use to live, there are only 2 people i know who enjoys the genre (im glad one of them is my younger brother), and the rest just gets turned off by the special effects and everything else. im glad to meet the people who enoys the genre here in DA.
cheers man.

G vs. MG definitely has a lot of energy in its monster battles. G vs. KG is good too (the first Heisei I saw), but it doesn't have that special quality of G vs. MG, Godzilla (1984), or G vs. Destroyah (my three favorites of the Heisei Era).
I love G's roar after he blows off KG's middle head (actually the roar might have came after he knocked him down with the nuclear pulse; I can't remember exactly). (By the way what roar does your Godzilla have; Showa (first two films), Heisei (first three films), or Millenium?)
I love when, after he sends the charges back, he gets up and pushes the powerless MG down, and then the people watching at the JSDF headquarters stand up in shock, looking totally devastated. G then proceeds on about his business.
His defeat of MG is epic as well. The final blow to Spacegodzilla I don't remember quite as vividly, considering that entry underwhelmed me. I don't hate it by any means, though.
Godzilla doesn't have quite an appeal to the Joe Public over here in the U.S. either. He has his fans though. Maybe the new movie will revive the Big G's status to the average movie goer.
Best Wishes to ya.

ive read from reviews that G vs MG II was and is very favorable to a lot of people. its a got a great soundtrack too (opening theme)
I like the roar from the first one (1954) didnt hav a lot of the hi-pitched scream like sound. i dont mind the 90's, there is a blend of a low pitch roar at the end, but i think i would prefer the millenium. to me its just a upgraded (technology wise) version of the old (50s 60s).
I am not very fond of G vs Space G. too many elements that are distracting, especially that mascot (junior). i did like the space Godzilla suit design.

The soundtrack is pure awesomeness.
I like how the roar from the original Godzilla (and Godzilla Raids Again) sounds like an explosion. The roar from Godzilla (84), vs. Biollante, and vs. KG I like for the power it seems to represent. The millenium Godzilla roar is just an all around crazy sound. If I knew how, I would try mixing the three roars to come up with something new.
I feel the same way about G vs. SG that I do vs. Gigan. The action just doesn't have that much energy in either film. In vs. Gigan's case it's probably because of the state of the Godzilla, Anguirus, and King Ghidorah suits. Gigan and Space G are neat monsters though.

i havent seen 'raids again', (that and son of G)'
i think if you mix the 3 roars itl sound good.
iv only seen G vs SG fully once, the 2nd time i watched it, i skipped it to the last battle scenes. i do enjoy looking at the SG design.
i do enjoy watching G vs Gigan, eexcept for the re-using of shots from other g films (which think they do anyway). i really like the tandem of the G and anguirus, and i really hated the bits when Anguirus ass gets kicked too much. thats why i am making him a major monster for this fan art series, give him a chance for payback.

Well, I think once you get to see it, you might like it (Raids Again). It's slowly becoming one of my new favorites. Son of is better than some people make it out to be, but it's not a mind blower by any means.
G vs. SG has its moments, but it just doesn't thrill me.
The stock footage in vs. Gigan is the only major flaw, IMO. I know I complained about the quality of the suits and the battles, but in all, vs. Gigan is a colorful G flick. Anguirus never really has been a major ass kicker. However, he's one of the most noteworthy Godzilla allies/foes, so that counts for something. He should be more important, considering he's the first monster G fought.

i have to see 'raids again'. i think i am going to like it.
although i have to admit, i am not ready to watch 'Son Of', dont know, somthing puts me off.
G vs Gig is the third G film ive seen, so i didnt really notice the stock footage till later. but remains one of my fave showa titles.
before i watched Final Wars, i thought Godzilla would have some allies like Anguirus. i just assumed that, because they did mention GFW is almost like a remake of Destroy All Monsters(One of the best sci-fi movie titles in my opinion).

I hope you do. "Son of" isn't exactly one of the more intriguing G flicks, so I see where you're coming from.
I saw G vs. Gigan for the first time last year, and though not perfect, there's something quite likeable about it.
I would have prefered a more direct remake of Destroy All Monsters from G:FW. It would have made it much better IMO.
Best Wishes to ya, Elden. I think I'll leave you alone so you can enjoy your break. I'll revisit your page in a month or so (unless you have something (Godzilla related or otherwise) that you'll unveil in that time ; )

thanks man. will have a good break.
might be a while as we all mourn, and hope for japan's better...
will be difficult to be drawing japanese monsters destroying japanese buildings and stuff because of the present situation.
on contrary, promoting daikaiju genre is also a lil help in the (longer run), as these monster icons contribute to the Jap economy.
cheers man.
