Description Godzilla - King of the monsters
ZBrush 4, Photoshp CS4, Vue 8 and photography.

the concept of Godzilla here is to create a fat, massive, chunky clumsy, nuclear monster (heisei inspired). I sticked to Godzilla being a dinosaur. If there ever is a species of a marine theropod, that would be his kind. I gave him a massive tail, just for him to swim better and faster and also to balance the heavy body.

The texture is inspired from the millennium G-Suit. I think that is the best skin texture for G. I like the millenium G suit, especially the texture and armor, but the heisei g-suits remain my fave. i really dont know why its my fave, maybe because, of his size and power and for having a very exprssive face, he can actually grin and you will think that he is really angry...

It took me more than 2 weeks to complete this piece, but it took me 1 year to conceptualize and sketch and decide on how he'd look like.

regards. hope you like it.

You know what guys...Im gonna go on the record as sayin this version of Godzilla is one of the best designs Ive ever seen on here. The only reason some of you probably dont like it is because it doesnt look like the original, which seems pretty reminiscent of another kaiju. (zilla)

And MM, what right do you have to negatively criticize someone's work like that? You want all of us comin to your pages and saying how childishly basic your artwork is, and how we showed your stuff to everyone else and they voided thier bowels? Hell, Matt Frank, the man that revolutionized the "Theropod Godzilla", says he likes it. Im not sayin you should like it simply because he does, just that he has a deserved and heavy voice in our fan community. And thanks to LDN's latest contributions, his voice and art is right up there as well.

What LDN has done here is make a departure from the norm...something I think the series always needs. Its new, its radical, and it is Godzilla. Nothing here says its not. This Godzilla design makes me think he is a brawler, the kinda guy you dont want to square off with in the parking lot outside the bar. That massive tail can probably bring down giant skyscrapers down in one swing. I love the design all around because it brings Godzilla back to those bestial roots of his.

Thank you LDN for this awesome series! Keep up the good work on this and all of your art! Also on a side note I love how Giagan is layin down under G's foot, lookin like he just got pwned! lol

thanks man.

i am glad u picked him up as G. as he is very G to me. yes he is a brawler, even with short hands. i dont like the idea of bullying, but thats one of the images i try to associate to this G design.

i understand how and why others didnt like it as they have their biases, and their own ideal G design.

will be doin more monster designs.. keep in touch....

What right do you have to tell someone else what he can and cannot criticize? He isn't criticizing the art, he is criticizing the design. There is a difference, you realize.

Attacking the art of someone who doesn't like something you do is awfully childish.

You don't get it - TakatahuMistika wasn't necessarily attacking MM's art, but rather his unconstructive criticism ("laughably bad," "LMFAO," etc.) MM's approach is very immature.

He attacked his art rather blatantly.

Right there.

I know MM is less than helpful most of the time, but that was unnecessary.

Yes, there is something wrong with that. Telling someone that because they aren't as good an artist as someone else they have no right to say anything is wrong.

They were both being douchebags, and neither has any excuse for it.

No, what I did genius, was retorted. Laughing in someone's face, then parading his art around to get other people to laugh, is attacking. There was nothing constructive in his original post. I don't give a damn if he likes it or not, nor do I care if he likes his design...my point is don't laugh in someone's face and call it criticism. There is a difference, you realize.

Scatha-the-Worm In reply to TakatahuMistika [2011-02-21 01:31:44 +0000 UTC]

Oh for...Listen. I know he didn't say anything that was constructive, and I know he's being an asshole. He pisses me off too. Ren already told him off for doing it.

I was saying that calling his art out as an attack was stupid, and asking him what right he had to criticize when his art was "Childish" was childish in itself. You basically said he had no right to say anything when his own art was so bad.

TakatahuMistika In reply to Scatha-the-Worm [2011-02-21 05:19:30 +0000 UTC]

Ok I think there has been a miscommunication between the two of us...I wasnt saying his art was bad, as a matter of fact Ive never really looked at it, I was merely using that as an example.

As someone who admires all forms of art Id never stoop that low. So I apologize for any confusion there.

Well alright then. It just makes me angry when people use that line, "You aren't as good as so-and-so, so you can't say anything!" and sadly I've seen it used on MM before. I got a little defensive, so I apologize as well.

That said, he is a little passionate about this subject, so he does come off as a dick at times, this being one of them. He doesn't mean to come off that way, but...well.

A VERY impressive revamp you got here. While this design certainly isn't that of the "classic" upright, limber-armed city-destroyer, it's a neat interpretation of what a "real" Godzilla could look like. An immense, uniquely-proportioned theropod heavyweight, with a city-leveling potential all of his own. I approve of it as a fan-based piece, but not as a design for anything commercial, such as the new movies Toho is supposed to get working on in a few years.

Also, when it comes to the posture debate, the new-style horizontal stance means little ultimately. While I well know that kaiju just aren't physically possible to begin with, a fair suspension of disbelief is needed to make it at least look plausible. Most theropod-like Godzilla designs suffer from laughably thin limbs and overly "normal" theropod proportions. This piece is one of the few of them that actually keeps the enormous bulk in the design, while still allowing a decent amount of speed when necessary, in addition to actually warping the standard large theropod anatomy into something much more feasible at a kaiju size. Besides, in this incarnation, he can take an upright stance by just sitting on his tail.

I'm torn. It's textured amazingly. I applaud your redesign approach. It's certainly interesting, enough to spark a debate. It's amazingly well done. Perhaps it's a Godzilla way down the line that has mutated even more so, to the point of him getting morbidly obese? I guess it's just not reading as Godzilla to me. But it's a killer piece of work. I have never really been a fan of any Godzilla that's designed with a T-Rex in mind, so I'm biased from the get go. But don't let the negative remarks get you down, mine or from anyone else. Whether or not I like the redesigns you do, I'm having a blast following along. I can't wait to see more!

i have worked on this design for almost a year, and i really thought i hit what i really wanted for a G design, not that its needed to be changed, but just an expression.

The originals are forever great of course and will always be inspirational.

Cool design! I love the head, dorsal plates, spikes, texture, and the tail!

I don't know why there's so much hate towards this design. It's a fictitious Japanese monster. MANY Japanese designs defy realism - planes with no wings; huge, crazy looking mecha; pencil-thin girls swinging around 200-lb swords, etc. Part of the fun behind Japanese designs is seeing them come to life in cartoons and movies. Give the designer (LDN-RDNT) a break. This is just a concept.

I wouldn't worry about MM's comments; his monsters are more obese than this design.

Now then, as it's obviously been stated, this is quite the radical redesign. However, it reminds me a lot of Deviljho from the Monster Hunter series. He's huge, powerful, and throws around his weight like nobody's business. I can see this design doing exactly that, and doing it well. One of the better therapod based designs for Godzilla IMO.

thanks man. yeah, MM is just being his usual...

i have to tell you the monster hunter tri art direction gave me the boost and inspiration to carry on with this series. (together with lost planet 2) i was gonna give up having too much western art influence, i gotta have more japanese art influence.
i didnt get to Deviljho (is that for PSP?). i only have reached the Barroth, and even that beast alone just gave me lots of inspiration and ideas for godzilla. i will check that deviljoh out.

thanks again for commenting.

Pyatt In reply to LDN-RDNT [2011-02-23 19:17:43 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, as SS4G mentioned, Deviljho is a monster encountered in the online mode only. He has the chance to appear in high rank quests (+ quests) and high rank Qurupecos sometimes summon him. Deviljho can either be a blessing or a curse; he can royally mess up the monster you're hunting (he does indeed go after other monsters intentionally), but hits like a freight train if you don't have really good gear; and even then, he still hurts.

He's also in the new PSP Monster Hunter, where you can fight him offline! Of course, I'm still not sure whether to be happy or afraid about that. XD

wow. how many controversies this created in just some hours. and how unopened for new ideas people can be, noooo good.

as for the design: i had given him slightly bigger arms, more like mix between legs and arms. and a more characteristic head, looks here like a green t-rex head just. and the chest part toned down.

the rest looks very good, i like the long tail for swimming reasons.

very skilled and interesting how u create and display all those japan monsters. could be from a videogame or movie.

thanks for this comment. to justify the arms, because of the theropod posture, we now have less protruding hands. So he will have more head/neck attacks, plus head butts and biting power. the chest part i picked up from the 2nd heisei G-suit (late 80s), bulky and looking like a king.

i will be posting another angle of him soon. so you can see his head details.

cheers.
