Description
Arthur Rimbaud (1854 - 1891)From On This Deity blog [link]
(...) The legend of Rimbaud centres around five extraordinary years, commencing in 1870, when the prodigiously talented 16-year-old poet from Charleville, 125 miles northeast of Paris, suddenly rejected his academically promising trajectory and ran away from home three times – most notoriously, in February 1871, to join the anarchist insurgents of the Paris Commune. Back in Charleville, Rimbaud wrote two letters and sent samples of his poetry to the eminent Symbolist poet Paul Verlaine – eliciting the infamous and fateful response: “Come, great and dear soul; we are calling out to you, we are awaiting you.” Rimbaud arrived at Verlaine’s Paris home in September 1871 where the two poets promptly fell madly in love and, with no regard for Verlaine’s pregnant wife, embarked on a tempestuous affair. Shunned by the Parisian Symbolists, Rimbaud and Verlaine fled to London in July 1872 where they lived in decadent squalor and argued violently. After countless separations and dramatic reunions, the relationship finally ended when, in a jealous rage, Verlaine shot Rimbaud in the wrist and was sentenced to two years of hard labour in a Belgian prison for attempted murder. Rimbaud was left disoriented and returned to Charleville where he completed his two masterpieces, Illuminations and A Season in Hell – his prose account of his time with Verlaine. And then, just five years after his life as a poet began and shortly before he turned 20, Arthur Rimbaud gave up writing forever. (...)

Love the cloth folds. Drapery is something I'm paying more attention to these days.

The picture is stunning and, coupled with the story underneath, is just... wow. I've never heard of Rimbaud, but now I want to know more about him.

That's great. ^^ Unfortunately, the magic of his poetry is largely lost in translation.

That is sadly always the way. But thanks for the introduction to him, anyway! Maybe one day I'll learn enough to be able to read his poems in their original form.

"the only source Robb does provide (483 n.10) for the tale of the glass of milk is the memoir by Rimbaud's contemporary and friend Ernest Delahaye (197). But Delahaye's picture is framed quite differently from Robb's. He recounts Rimbaud's confiding in him in 1872 about a blague or hoax he had recently pulled off:
Either those Rimbaud biographers can't read French (!!) or they deliberately overlooked the last line of Rimbaud's confession and therefore concealed that the whole episode was a hoax fabricated by Rimbaud himself. Etiemble and Lefrere in their respective biography of Rimbaud didn't distort Delahaye's account.

"Arthur Rimbaud - Une Question De Présence" by Jean-Luc Steinmetz is the most reliable Rimbaud's biography I've read. Alain Borer’s is not bad either although truly massive and sometimes not easy to read (weird high register French). Enid Starkie’s is dated (1973) and full of myths that have been debunked since. Graham Robb's is the worst, a self-serving compilation of speculations and fantasies and most likely the one you were refering to above. Lucky you! ha ha!

Agreed about the Robb book, that biography is more about the biographer's own prejudices and lame attempts at psychology than about Rimbaud. >_<

^^ Totally. If he were alive today, I would easily imagine Rimbaud as the leader of an electro French band. Thanks for the fav.
