Description
Another piece in my ongoing Phantom Portrait series. This is, of course, Raoul, Vicomte de Chagny in all of his late nineteenth century aristocratic glory.
The uniform is *not* a real one, by the by. I felt that he needed an invented hybrid that nodded a little more to Maria Bjornsen and Nelson Eddy.

The only Raoul picture I like so far, and trust me, I've seen a lot of Raoul pictures. Almost makes me like the character.

This reminds me of Prince Albert-Victor, the Duke of Clarence and Avondale of Great Britain (King Edward VII and Queen Alexandra's eldest son) Great job! Just like I thought him to look from the books!

Exactly how I pictured Raoul without even knowing it. Great job!

His eyes are the most beautiful thing of all. I don't know how you did it, but they look gentle and sad and confused all at once. Go you! :

I think that staring at a lot of daguerreotypes helped. Victorian Portraiture is just so somber and detached.
Thanks!

Yeah, probably having something to do with the fact that the subject of the picture would have to sit still for like a week before they could actually take the picture.

Finally!! Historical justice done to Raoul! And I no longer have to picture Movie Raoul with a big fluffy mustache, like I did the first three times I read the book.

So you're continuing the series! I'm glad; always good to see more art from you.
This Raoul looks about as close to what I would consider the ' perfect Raoul' as is possible. The only thing that I would have done differently would be for his hair to be more blondish, but that's not a criticism on your work. His eyes are great, and I love all the details in his uniform.
Something about looking at this reminds me that I still have four paintings waiting to be finished.

Egh. I think that my colors scan wierd. It is rather golden blonde in the original, but the scan looks darker. Bah.
Thanks!

Scanners... Mine stretches pictures. Makes it a nightmare when I have to scan something in sections (which is pretty much always).
You're welcome!

Lovely! He looked older than I imagine, but that might be the period aspects--everyone looked older back then. Good on you, with the mustache et al.

Thanks! I kept looking at vintage daregotypes (sp?) and everyone pretty much seemed to be staring off into nothingness in 3/4 , so I guess that I tried to mimic that style.

i'm so glad made him look like his book description. sometimes, other adaptions leave minor details out.

Indeed they do. He tends to look rather bland by comparison in most adaptations.

Very, very lovley piece. I just love how the gold and red detailing looks curled in all the black and blue crosshatching. I also like the simple earnesty in his face.

Eh, I guess that's what this series is going to be for. To put on paper the crazy way that I imagine the rest of the Phantom characters.

cardowl In reply to Opergeist [2008-04-06 13:22:01 +0000 UTC]
Oh, it's not crazy. I just think that the book is very subjective. Which is why I love it. There are as many ways to look at the characters as there are people who try looking at them.
I really did like the picture, though! It's just that it wasn't they way I thought of him, which is probably not the way you thought of him, and that's all cool!
...I hope that I'm not rambling in delirium. LOL

Hooray for period (and if I'm not mistaken, Leroux) accurate Raoul mustache. And of course, Hussar style Napoleonic uniforms make any man look manlier.

Indeed! There had to be *something* interesting about the guy, and Leroux paints him as quite the adventurer nobleman.
