Description
“In the moment when the eyes of the two men met, Javert, without having made the least gesture, became hideous. He had the face of a fiend who has found the victim he thought he had lost.”What can I say? Javert and Valjean have grown on me since I started reading the book, so much so that poor Enjolras has been retired to the back of the sketchbook! Ha ha. I really like the way Hugo portrays Javert. He seems a very black and white character, perhaps misunderstood but cold and ruthless all the same. I’d imagine him to wear that stern look most of the time… he is, after all, the LAW! And the law is not mocked! Yadda yadda ha ha ha! *Is thrown in the Seine* XD
So yeah, I went a little crazy on the old textures here. Not so sure if it really works… perhaps it’s a bit much. Still, Valjean and Cosette attempt to escape the dogged determination of Javert…

You captured the character of Javert fantastically, well done! Also, the texture-y look is just perfect - reminds me of the old engravings from way way back in the day. Instant fave (Also, it's brilliant that you have read the book - welcome to the dark side
)

Thank you very much! I must admit that I'm not fond of his face here, buuut, I do love those old engravings and it was inspired by those (in particular the one of Javert standing in his coat). Thankies!

He looks like the "Shojo Cosette" version of Javert. The most book!accurate Les Miserables version I have ever seen. Awesome series. Did you intentionally draw Javert to look like the SC series?

Ha ha, I must admit that I've never seen all of SC and it was ages ago at that. I was core concerned with getting him to look as close to the original book illustrations as possible. I'm not a huge fan of this particular image now, but hey, there you go.

YOU READ THE BOOK! TY! I have a book question for you: What is the ages history of Valjean vs Javert? Who is older? Younger?

Or 11 years older. The dates are really in question!

Hey, THANK YOU! I think so too - I came up with a 10 year difference between them, with Valjean being the older one. That means that when Valjean went to prison, Javert was like 11 years old. XD Which, in the 1957 movie version, we see the little boy Javert in prison, watching over convicts with his father (one of the convicts is valjean). but I am not sure about that movie - Javert's father was not from the police (actually, his father was a criminal). So I don't much like the 1957 version - the characters don't match, the story does not match Hugo's plot....
Love Valjean and Javert, though Javert only after he saved Valjean from the Patron-Minet!

Heh heh, that's reading into things quite a bit, but I can understand why you'd want to assess. They are both intricate yet familiar characters.

Indeedy. Valjean is older than Javert, going by his birth year of 1769. Valjean is roughly six years older than Javert.

THANK YOU! That is another number I came by. At first I got that Valjean as the older one, and by about 10 years. Then I wrote down some numbers, and it comes to Valjean being the older one, but by 8 years. Still, 6 and 8 are pretty close together, when we only have vague details to work with.
Thanks again! You replied so fast!

I love the high cheekbones, and the way he's darker than Cosette and Valjean, even though they're in the shadows. And, of course, the slight raggedness of Valjean's attire is always adorable. (I have issues.)

Not particularly, although I think his great coat took on an element of the stage costume.
Ha ha, I must admit that Quast is the MAN when it comes to Javert!

Egad!!!! Egad! He surely is a great Javert! Voices in the lower register are always far more sexier than effeminate pop tenors... Which is the very reason I love operatic baritones, they are exceedingly dark, disturbed and demented! One bariotone, a Russian opera singer, has looks and a voice that superced anyone's perception of fat, uncomely singers of opera: [link] and his voice! [link]
Thank you immensely, Miss Preston for sharing Mr. Hearn with me. I do hope Mr. Hvorostovsky suits you as well!

Wow! Hvorostovsky would be great in Faust! I think I've just fallen in love with his voice too! Thank you for sharing!
By the way, you may find this interesting if you have a love of voices (which I figure you do!) I certainly found it interesting! [link]

Hvortostovsky was in Faust numerous times, in fact he is osndidered on fo the best Valentin of the generations, here are some photos of him in that opera:[link]
[link]
The first one was him and German Bass Rene Pape grinning like badly behaved schoolboys backstage, the second was another production at the met.
Miss Preston, thank you again so much for the link! Yes, I have loved voices for six years now, and am quite the obsessed fanatic about operatic voices!

Hee hee, and that's interesting because I imagined him playing the part of Mephistopheles, and yet it looks like he's trying to be the good guy! His voice would suit both parts mind, he's lucky!

Yes, I too envisioned Hvorostovsky playing the glib-tongued, seductive agent of Satan, but alas, the role was for bass, and Hvoro is a baritone, but he is the most urbane Iago I have seen : [link]
Yes, Valentin is Marguerite' older Brother who is killed by Faust in a duel when he discovered Faust has just impregnated his sister.
