Description
“In the moment when the eyes of the two men met, Javert, without having made the least gesture, became hideous. He had the face of a fiend who has found the victim he thought he had lost.”What can I say? Javert and Valjean have grown on me since I started reading the book, so much so that poor Enjolras has been retired to the back of the sketchbook! Ha ha. I really like the way Hugo portrays Javert. He seems a very black and white character, perhaps misunderstood but cold and ruthless all the same. I’d imagine him to wear that stern look most of the time… he is, after all, the LAW! And the law is not mocked! Yadda yadda ha ha ha! *Is thrown in the Seine* XD
So yeah, I went a little crazy on the old textures here. Not so sure if it really works… perhaps it’s a bit much. Still, Valjean and Cosette attempt to escape the dogged determination of Javert…

"Could it be he's some old jailbird
That the tide now washes in
Heard my name and started running
Had the brand upon his skin
And the girl who stood beside him
When I turned they both had gone
Could he be the man I've hunted?
Could it be he's Jean Valjean?"
I loved playing Javert, such an interesting guy. Lovely drawing!

Afterall, he has got Valjean to hunt through the ages.
I find it funny how Javert is always arguing with Jean in the musical. Can't he let stuff rest for now? I mean, why does he actually think he musz hunt Valjean? The man is free, dammnit!!! Even if he had this yellow paper thing. *rolleyes*

Ha ha ha, it's because he can only see in black and white. there are good people and there are bad people, and nothing in-between. Valjean broke his parole, and that's why Javert initially hunts him down. As he says in the Neeson film "you've managed to beat me..." XD

Ah, I see. 'Honest work, just reward, that's the way to please the lord.' Now things make sense.
Still it's weird to think than anyone could think this way about any other human person.

I must say, the part where Fantine begs to Javert to let her go and he is like 'Off with you into jail' I was close to throwing the book out of the window. But I restrained myself, of course.
Still, Javert is a weird character somehow, so very into the law and everything...

THAT sounds really harsh. What kind of problem did they have back then? I mean, why did they act so trict towards their own people?

Hey Justin. Have you ever read this book? If not, I really, really think you'd love it! The amount of detail that Hugo has poured into the description of each of his characters is fantastic.

The only book by Hugo I read was "The Hunchback of Notre Dame," and I was struck by how vivid the characters were (and how flat the characters become in every single film adaptation). Claude Frollo as described in the book was actually a major inspiration for Virgil's mental decline in "The Goldenlea" and helped me create an antagonist who was more than a mincing cartoon villain.

...very lovely artwork as always....Javert was my fav character in the book, musical and all other adaptations of the story...I think I would find it easy to play his character convincingly simply by sharing a lot of his character's traits.....I especially love the vicious, primal look you've given him here...great job..=3

Hey, don't forget that Javert does in fact have a pretty wry sense of humor! No one ever portrays him that way, he's not serious all the time. He cracks jokes at least twice in the book (they're tame by modern standards, of course) and of course "when he laughed, he was a tiger"
