Description
“In the moment when the eyes of the two men met, Javert, without having made the least gesture, became hideous. He had the face of a fiend who has found the victim he thought he had lost.”What can I say? Javert and Valjean have grown on me since I started reading the book, so much so that poor Enjolras has been retired to the back of the sketchbook! Ha ha. I really like the way Hugo portrays Javert. He seems a very black and white character, perhaps misunderstood but cold and ruthless all the same. I’d imagine him to wear that stern look most of the time… he is, after all, the LAW! And the law is not mocked! Yadda yadda ha ha ha! *Is thrown in the Seine* XD
So yeah, I went a little crazy on the old textures here. Not so sure if it really works… perhaps it’s a bit much. Still, Valjean and Cosette attempt to escape the dogged determination of Javert…

I see you drew this a while ago, but just thought I'd mention I love the expressions in this piece. Especially little Cosette's.
And I haven't read the book yet, but am certainly going to!

Although I love Javert's amazing eyebrows, it's definitely Valjean's expression in this that I really, really love.

I imagine him just thinking: "bollocks."
But seriously! I think it really captures a sense of sinking-heart dread that's difficult to describe, just in one simple expression. And that I love.

I'm becoming a fan of Javert precisely because he's so black-and-white and I love to poke fun at him. xD

Ha ha ha ha, jeez... I don't like this any more. I really messed up Javert's face (or his eyebrows to be more precise). Still, it was good practice at least.
Ha ha ha, well I don't blame you. He is an amazing character!

Oh oh oh oh, Les Mis!! D
You know, I can't imagine if you're read Phantom by Susan Kay (not the original Gaston Leroux version) but she had a character in the novel called 'Javert' who was Erik (the Phantom's) ...eh, keeper of sorts. In a later article about the book, she said indeed, that much of her character, including the name, was inspired from Victor Hugo's likeness of the character.
Love this piece by the way. I think the texture really works well here, reminds me of a classic "Scrooge" haha. I love Javert, gotta be my favorite from Les Mis...though I am yet to read the novel, I have read Victor Hugo's the Hunchback of Notre Dame and loved it, so Les Mis is on my list.
Keep up the fantastic work. I always enjoy my visits to your gallery. ^^

I find Javert most humorous at times--no doubt he would seem less so, were I standing in Monsieur Valjean's shoes.
The darker side of your style truly suits his prowl-y look--lovely work, Ma'am!

I love the intense feel of this sketch. If Javert were chasing me, I'd be freaking out. But he's awesome all the same. Even if he doesn't mean to, he gets so INTO the pursuit. I think there's a part where he's compared to an artist unfolding a masterpiece when he's dogging Valjean through Paris. Oh, Javert, you obsessive lawman! *pats him on the head*
