Description
It occurred to me that I have never really drawn a portrait of Erik's conscience. Nadir Kahn was the only man who ever deigned to be called friend by the opera ghost. This portrait reflects him in his post as the daroga of Mazanderan during the mid nineteenth century in Persia. The cursory research that I dug up on the place and period led to the combination of westernized frock coat and traditional-esque sashes of rank.
The shah (Whom I have equated with Nasser al-Din Shah Qajar 1831-1896) mentioned in Kay's book was actually of of the first of his dynasty to embrace technology, particularly photography. Yet, during his dictatorial rule, from what I can tell, there was widespread persecution of religious dissidents, which magnified after an assasination attempt. This leaves our fictitious Persian court with plenty of opportunities for 'amusing deaths'.

Nadir is just so cool. Plus I LOVE the colours you've used here.

First off, you really did capture Nadir. Secondly, I thank you for figuring out who the shah was. Amazing job, truly.

I love this picture. Every time I tried to picture the Daroga, he looked like this, down to the very last detail. I love the exasperated, world-weary look you managed to capture in his eyes.
And for the record, the half frustrated, half amused look on his face is adorable.

Wow, this is amazing. He looks like he's got a lot of secrets hidden behind those eyes.

he has very kind eyes...mature eyes...
he was a sweet character...his conscience, indeed, and a better friend not many of us can find...
a lovely tribute.

He looks great! I really like Daroga's character. He's the only truly sane and good person in the story. Everyone else is just a little off (or a lot off), and fairly selfish. I wish he wasn't so left out of all of the movies... *scowls* Talk about leaving out the voice of reason! Anyway, beautiful work!

Indeed! I agree whole-heartedly. He has been severely neglected from the film canon and it really blows my mind. I can see why his substory was left out of the Webber musical, but that doesn't mean that I have to like it ::smirks:

Wonderful! I just love his expression...
There really isn't enough of Nadir in phan art.

Agreed! Actually, you know there really isn't enough Raoul either. I mean, nobody actually likes the guy, but he's part of the leading trio.
Hmm.. sketchy time..Apparently I'm doing a series.

True. Even if no one likes him, he's still important.
Can't wait to see the rest of this 'series'

Honestly, I can't remember where/if it is in Kay. It's quite explicit in Leroux, however; though he's also described with "ebony" skin.
Since I'm not convinced anyone has ever had "jade green" eyes, however, I'm willing to tweak canon for realism.

::sighs:: Damn. I haven't read Leroux in ages.
Yeah, most of the Persian/Iranian folks that I've ever seen wouldn't really be classified as 'ebony' skinned ::grins:: or jade eyed for that matter.

That's pretty cool that you did all that research into the reigning Shah and his 'managerial approaches' (to borrow a phrase from a certain well-known Disney flick). I like the combination of the European tailored suit with the ethnic Persian flourishes. Nicely done

Eh, what can I say...I MUST have a reason other than aesthetic. Helps me sleep at night ::smirks:: Although, being fair, I didn't do a gargantuan amount of research....but that's only because the library was not at hand at the moment.
Many thanks.

Yes, but he wasn't really featured. I suppose that I meant rather that he hadn't gotten his own portrait yet.
