Description "..which earned a Mother's Fear and Loathing.."

More of the new style that I'm playing with.

Here is our dear Phantom during his daily ritual of masking himself. With this piece I really wanted to play with his deformity in s more organic way than I usually do.

Beautiful yet grotesque

Same what Twangaloo said!
I just can't picture Erik exactly as Leroux described him; entirely corpse-like and such, but also not as how he's depicted in the musical, or worse; the movie (sunburn, aghhhh!), and this, THIS is exactly how Erik looks in my mind!
I just can't describe how much I like this piece, it probably is one of my favourite Phantom depictions so far on DA, as it is as well human as just really creepy. (Leroux is too much monster, too little (visible) man, and Gerry hardly has a deformity, at least nothing worth so much fear and hate)

Poor Erik, if people could only learn not to judge a book by its cover...
The thing that maybe makes me most sad is that so many 'phans' cry out they would love Erik, see who he is, etc. etc. but only now they know his story, have given a peek inside his heart, while many would probably still be shortsighted if they met someone who looked like this or had another bad 'deformity' of ANY sort.

I am so pleased that this piece has received such a great reaction!

Asrath, I agree with you strongly on many of your points. The reality of The Phantom's existence would not have been an easy one, apart from the sheer magnitude of his physical issues, his emotional scars would have been too great for the ill-equipped. In such a way, he is a good metaphor for anyone dealing with alienating 'otherness' due to physicality, addiction or social deprivation.

All of that is to say that he would not be easy to love in any way.

You're welcome! It's truly a terrific piece. Okay, some things could have been better, but it really 'connects' to me and it's amazing that it's a traditional drawing!
Over time I've grown to like Leroux's depiction of Erik, but I think this is a great 'hybrid' between the two main interpretations!

Yeah, I agree. I think Erik COULD have had a good life, and could have ended up as a good and happy person, IF he was accepted for who he was, regardless of his appearance. If people treat you like a monster, and keep telling you that you're horrific you eventually WILL start believing that they are right, and possibly start ACTING like one as well!
I think that with the right help and all he might have been able to overcome his past and at least partially heal his scars, but the chance that such a thing would happen, especially in his era, is as slim as a meteorite hitting Earth...
Yeah, if you look well... you see Erik's all around you. Everywhere!

Probably not, yes. In our 'phan-imagination' he of course is, but in reality... well I think he would be pretty difficult to get on with. But even though he is seriously disturbed and does horrific things because of his past and all, he still hasn't entirely lost his humanity. So I think that eventually... with a good dose of patience and a lot of luck, one would be able to retrieve it from him, even though his scars probably reach so deep that they would never completely disappear.

I know it's been said before me, but I think this is my favourite picture i've seen of him. Its pretty much exactly how I imagine Erik to look; in between the two main interpretations. Gahh its amazing<3

This is incredible! I really love how you've mixed the Leroux and ALW (as many people have said. X'D) I love covering one half of his face and looking at one side at a time.

Overall just an incredible picture, I also love the song quote you used

Wow, love it. People seem to have trouble drawing ALW stuff without making the deformity frivolous. But you pulled it ff! Anyway, nice work.

Thanks very much! I wanted it to be a little less squishy than the stage version and a little more corpse-like a la Leroux.

The colors and shading on this is just gorgeous. Well, as gorgeous as it can be with the subject matter. Although...his good side is rather hadsome. His lips look like yours.

Heh, yeah it is hard to be 'gorgeous' when one lacks integral parts of their face.

Really? Hah!
That's completely unintentional.
