Description
My very first attempt at realistic pencil portraits. The scanner made the texture look less soft than what it really is.A4. Spent ~14 hours on it. Tools: H, HB and 4B pencils + eraser + toilet paper.
Referenced as directly as I could from Dark Headshot - 7 by
The title is from Janis Joplin lyrics. I listened to her quite a lot when I was starting this.

Have you ever read Francesca Lia Block's 'Witch Baby'? This looks just like the nina bruja.

She's described as having snarl-ball hair and jacaranda-blossom eyes, looking like she drifted down from another planet. She also plays ferocious drums.

It looks really good, sort of chilling. The hair is shaded nicely and the way its tossed about really adds to the overall tone.

great work on drawing! I love the expression of her face, it's very powerful
...for what did you use toilet paper? I'm drawing too so please tell me if it got any advantages. guess the structure must be more rough than blending with tissue.

Lechtonen In reply to Gironimo [2008-09-24 08:54:13 +0000 UTC]
To be honest, I had run out of tissue!
But, still, it is different. At least the toilet paper I had was thin with very smooth texture, and thus produced extremely even colour surfaces. Tissue is softer and has more texture, which means you can give more character to your surfaces with it. I would only recommend using toilet paper in very special situations where instead of gradient you need to get a single tone. (Or if you run out of tissue
)
But having said this, I'm not that pro

Thank you!
I am going to do some more -- they just take such a long time to draw and don't give me the colour frills that I need to live. So, it might take a while until I get there, sorry
But if you want to commission me to do a portrait of you or someone else, I am available. 20 euros for an A4 portrait + postal if you want the original.

The position and expression are amazing! Are you sure that is your first attempt at a realistic portrait?
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
Lechtonen In reply to Flocculus [2008-02-14 10:58:43 +0000 UTC]
Well, yes it is. I mean, of course I've done a lot of sketches during years, and more comic style things with hints of realism, but this is my first time trying to just transfer the thing on the paper pure and simple, with nothing added. I did spend hell of a lot of time on it too!
Thanks!

Very nice drawing. Wow 14 hours? Thats how long I spend on a painting! You are very patient and the finished work is worth the effort you put in.

Thank you. I've been practicing patient work processes recently. Pencil portraits have been a good exercise in that.
