Description
My very first attempt at realistic pencil portraits. The scanner made the texture look less soft than what it really is.A4. Spent ~14 hours on it. Tools: H, HB and 4B pencils + eraser + toilet paper.
Referenced as directly as I could from Dark Headshot - 7 by
The title is from Janis Joplin lyrics. I listened to her quite a lot when I was starting this.

Thank you. I'm especially glad that you find hair ok, as I thought it was particularly difficult to draw

I believe it was difficult, that's the same I think when I had to draw lots of hair.

Obviously I have to draw more like this, because you're not the first one to ask
Although personally I find painting more satisfying and expressive -- this is mainly just good practice for basic drawing skills.

Hm...I guess so. I'm not really a painter myself, so I wouldn't know. But seeing varied tecniques if very, very fun.

Hiukset ja ,varsinkin tuo, käsi mykistivät. En tiedä mitään vaikeampaa kuin saada kosketusta kuvaan, mutta tässä näyttää että hahmo tosiaan pitelee kiinni olkapäästään.

hey! first off, thanks for the feature
For your first attempt at a realistic portrait this is awesome. You should see my first...lol. Anyway, your choice of photograph was great. I'll have to check out some of the other stock photos. Since you asked for critique, I'll be more than happy to
The first thing I notice is that you obviously have a strong art foundation, unlike me. You have great understanding of the human form. I think if you really want to.. you will be great at realism in the near future. One thing that strikes me right off is the amount of heavy outlines, mainly in the hand and lips. In most circumstances heavy outlines take away from the realistic look. Another thing worth mentioning is the type of paper you use. It might just be your scanner playing tricks, but normally a smoother paper is used when drawing people. It all depends on the textures that are in your drawing. Personally, I use smooth bristol board 90% of the time.. sometimes I use vellum for a little more tooth. Using a smoother paper can really help when you deal with the texture of the skin.
One of the things I look for any any piece of work is the emotion seen through it. The reference you picked is a great example. The eyes and hand is what really stands out for me. I think you got the hand Ok, but the eyes lack serious emotion. I can see small hints of it trying to peek through, but it's not quite there. When doing portraits, eyes are probably one of the most important parts b/c most of the time they are the focal point and first thing the viewer looks at.
Anyway, just one more thing. Somebody told me this (or something like it) and it has really helped me on my way.
Treat the entire piece of art like it is the most important part. In other words, don't rush through anything. You might be able to draw a face perfectly, but if you can't draw hair the drawing will be shat.

Wow, that's some of the most useful critique I've ever received. Thanks a lot.
Yeah, I was thinking of the outlines too. A cheap routine trick, really, from my part. I have taken such strong influence from comic art. Next time I try to be more careful with them.
And the paper -- yeah, I wasn't sure what type would be best, so I used what I had. Which happened to be somewhat rough. Together with the scanner they create rather rugged texture. Gotta try something smoother next time.
I especially appreciate your comment concerning the eyes. I think most pencil portraits lack any living emotion, and that is something I want to avoid. I'm mostly an expressionist, when it comes to art. Getting an aspect of the inner state of the model on the paper means a world to me.
And I need to keep your last sentences in mind. There is something quite meditative in drawing with that attitude, appreciating every detail.
Again, thank you very much for a profound comment. I'm quite touched by it.

i think this is wonderful especially for a first time realistic portrait attempt!! i don't think my first pencil sketches came out as good
you did wonderful with the anatomy and shading.
Realistic portrait work takes a lot of patience and hard work, the more layers of pencilwork you add the more realistic and professional your portrait will look

Yes, the hair is really good (this coming from a person who never managed to draw a haircut and whose hair looks accordingly).
I also like her very expressive hand. Good enough to rival an art student.

If I manage to get 33 watchers, I'll put up a photograph of me.
Although at the current pace I'll be fortunate if I still have hair by that time
