My very first attempt at realistic pencil portraits. The scanner made the texture look less soft than what it really is.A4. Spent ~14 hours on it. Tools: H, HB and 4B pencils + eraser + toilet paper.
Referenced as directly as I could from Dark Headshot - 7 by
The title is from Janis Joplin lyrics. I listened to her quite a lot when I was starting this.

Fine technique.
I love the tension in her forearm that grows to the fingers deep into her skin.
Evocative picture. Beautiful face. One would not guess by looking at her face the intensity of her emotion.

Anyways, I'm just an amateur. The skill I currently have comes from lots of drawing and painting, with various techniques, from different kinds of references and models, with various ways of looking at things.
You see in my gallery that even though there are some visual things that I prefer, I have practiced doing stuff in diverse styles. Diversity of practice helps one to understand deeper how hand, eye, medium and model interact when doing art. (Be it a real model or a mental image of something you want to draw.)

Yes, that's it. I have never received art education, and I am not a natural talent in any sense. So, it must be practice that has got me here. And it can also get you here, and even much further, seeing you have such burning desire to become an artist.

There is actually some graphite on most skin areas, but I wasn't able to get the scanner show such soft tones. So yeah, I'll try and make the next one darker -- you could say, more finished. Anyways, really glad ya like it

How I found you... I saw one of your pictures on the dA front page when you had just posted it.
Other ways to find people include:
* checking their page via their comments (more you comment others works, more people will visit your gallery)
* clicking the random deviant button that is below each page
* browsing with the search bar that is on top of each page

that is one cool scetch! Your first attempt was a resounding success! You captured a great emotion in this as well. Great looking hand too(hands are alsways my fav because they are such complicated shapes)
