Description 5/14/08

A sinister robot's disguise field is jammed, revealing its true appearance.

My brother keeps his Panama hat on top of a Model A Ford headlight in our library. My friend James Kendall once remarked that it looked like a robot wearing a hat, and that was such a compelling image to me that I drew it, and spent considerable time getting it just right. The disguise field generators (with built-in super-retroreflective screen projectors) on either side of its head are based on a small piece of electronics I found in my dresser drawer, its origin and purpose still a total mystery.

Thanks! I have plans to add a background and give it a companion piece, but it's hard to say when that will actually happen.

Thanks! This is pretty old but it's still the thing I'm most proud of. This spring I'm going to take some photos with matching lighting and try to draw up a background for it.

Thanks for the compliments on my Tumblr too.

I don't know much about drawing, but I love this one. The shading's awesome. The hat makes me think of Michael Jackson! Haha xD

Thanks for your comments. Yeah, I've seen pictures of Michael Jackson with a hat like that. That's not what I was thinking of when I drew this, though.

This. Is a fascinating design. Its thumbnail stood out to me. Excellent shading as usual! I like how that light came out; it adds atmosphere.

Your shading amazes me! And the details in this drawing is fantastic. Is that the inside of a headlight for his head? The hat also gives it such a nice touch.

When you draw, how do you begin it? With vague shapes of what you're planning? Or do you start with the hat or the face and then work outward from there?

I'm just incredibly curious. ^_^

In this case I did I rough sketch of the shoulders, then set up the headlight with the hat and did a rough sketch of those, then filled them in. Then I filled in the details of those (mostly from the actual items, but with some changes). When I was finally done with the still life part I put those away and filled in the sketch of the rest with the details of the clothes. I moved the headlight and the stuff I had it resting on top of and put a chair there with a jacket draped on it, to get a basic idea of what the shading would look like on an upper body in the same lighting as the "head." So I hope that answers your question. Most of my drawings are a lot less complicated than this, though.

As for the other question, I changed the interior of the headlight some to make it look better (in my opinion).

That's utterly fascinating though!

For lighting, when you're creating your creatures, how do you deal with that? Since I assume you won't have any models in which to work with?

I just use what I understand about light and shadow. It's only when I'm drawing something detailed/complicated like this, or something with multiple light sources, that I need to use real-life models.

Neat! Speaking of light and shadow, do you think that those two elements are crucial components to giving your work a 3-D feel and appearance?
