Description
Here is the Elk Tutorial requested by Scylothia [link] (I don’t know how to link a picture), before anything is asked I just want to add some points.1. These are not the definite facts on antler growth, there will always be some exceptions. Some elk have upwards cups (But ONLY red deer have the 3 prong cup), some red deer may have open cups. These steps are based on my own observations while I have been studying and drawing deer and elk.
2. I understand this is only part of a tutorial, I do not do into body, partly because I have never done a tutorial before and secondly because I have spent so long in learning antlers I find them the hardest obstacle for starting to draw deer.
3. Finally, I apologise for the hunting photo below, I do not endorse hunting for sport in any way I just think this picture is a good for showing the curves in the tines of Elk. I do not wish to cause a debate over the topic of game hunting.
With that out of the way, enjoy

I know a lot of old hunting techniques used to involved chasing stags towards forests where the trees prevent them from entering. So I think that's why most stags of that size stay in the open fields. He is pretty stunning though

Do you have any suggestions for drawing moose antlers? I've been trying for 3 hours straight and can't seem to get the perspective correct. I'd really appreciate some help - finding tutorials on drawing antlers is hard.

One of the reasons I do not attempt moose it because I find their antlers tricky, but I would not mind trying again and get the hang of it. I have found them similar to Fallow antlers in terms of the palm like shapes, I will try a few sketches and post them when I can

LOL they certainly can be quite impressive, I have never seen an Elk up close before but I know people who have and their back height is about 5ft is not higher. I am not sure as to the height of this man, but I am certain Elk antlers can be pretty spectacular

Will you be making a second tutorial to partner this one? I find this very, very helpful as one of my characters is very elk-like. Thank you very much for sharing your observations! I am sure many others also appreciate this!

Thank you for your wonderful comments ^^
I have been thinking about making a tutorial about elk colouring (but this one sorta shows the colours) Other than that I was thinking about drawing a turotial of deer antlers, how to classify different species and not mix them up

Oh, now that antler tutorial sounds neat-o; I bet that'd be extremely helpful, haha! I'd also be interested in elk colorations. Are there more than two?
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
LeeDassin In reply to raxgond [2010-11-13 06:33:30 +0000 UTC]
Well the two here are to show the distinction between red deer and elk (two different species) The most common colouration in elk is the cream with dark legs and mane with a white rump, the shade of the body will vary from brown to grey but there is always a darker mane and white rump
Oh and they have a white/lighter coloured bottom lip

Ah ok, an American elk is a wapiti. Because an elk is a moose for Europeans. And I was confused of how your "moose" looks
I love how you draw antlers :3

LOL, thanks ^^
Yeha, moose and Elk are really tricked when you move between continents, an American Moose is a European Elk and an American Elk can also be called a Wapiti, very confusing

Very informative! One question though; what is the difference between an elk and a sambar?
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
LeeDassin In reply to Dark-Hyena [2010-08-02 11:27:28 +0000 UTC]
Sambar deer are a lot smaller, they prefer forests and less open spaces than elk do. They are solitary unlike elk that live in groups and have a more dirty brown colour instead of the paler colour of an elk.
Finally in their antlers, a Sambars anlers will grow only 6 point (3 on each) and will not grow any more (at least I have no seen it before). The antlers vary in size and length, but not in the number of tines. Elk on the other hand can have a varying amount of points depening on age, anywhere from 6-20 in total (3-10 on each antler).
Thanks for the compliments, hope this helps

Ooooh, this is -very- helpful ^^ I'll be using it for certain.
Also, do you do fallow deer? I spot them a lot during my holidays in the northern parts of the Netherlands (it's my home country), they're very lovely
Can't wait to see a red deer in the wild sometime, they should be easily spotted in the Veluwe, which isn't too far away from where I live I've seen plenty of roe deer around the town I live in, that's for sure xD

LeeDassin In reply to langstrumpf89 [2010-04-18 12:45:40 +0000 UTC]
I have drawn fallow deer, but I do not find them as fun as most others as they have palm-like antlers with not as many single tines. But perhaps I should do a little tutorial on the different types of deer antlers so people know the difference
