go ask people who use flat colours may give you the answer
In my way, what help me choose the right color and make it look more...uhm.. not flats, is the background. With background, you can tell where the light come from, and what color to choose correctly. The color of background effect colors of the other parts.
Don't just use 1 color with darker and lighter color. It'll make your picture look flats. Try to mixed color will make your picture looks more real.
and my friend told me not to use black color, it's not the real color. And I see it's so true
