LeElf — Ikazuchi Question

Description My thoughts on how the Ikazuchi Class Carrier from MOSPEADA/ROBOTECH might launch and recover their craft. The original design work and series leave a lot to the imagination.

This capital ship operates her compliment of Mecha and Dropships in Space and theoretically needs to be able to efficiently recover hundreds of mecha, likely in as short a time as possible. I have drawn on several influences, from all of the three series of RT, to my understanding of real operational concerns of carrier type operations in the real world.

These are just my ideas and only in a rough sketch format.

These things are cool but whenever you see them in action they are getting destroyed left and right...they just can't deal with the overwhelming attacks of those space fighter inbits/invids.

Hello,

I appreciate your thoughts on this and your art work in general.

I do not see why the amidships bay door does not flip up or down, exposing a landing bay, for recovery of craft (perpendicular to the long axis of the ship).

As as been stated, there is no reason they craft, once vectors are matched (which would have to be done at some point), then just use maneuvering thrusters to back into the launch bays...

Or, here is a thought, why not the armored shroud around the launch bays flip down, giving a larger access to them? The armor could be there to help protect doing fighting, but if they are recovering when not fighting... I am assuming the shrouds are there to protect the craft/mecha until they are to launch.

Carrier craft should not really be in the 'thick of it', that is why carriers have a armada of other vessels that screen and protect it from direct confrontation.

I think all of these ideas would work, and very nice illustrations.

The slide out hanger block on the side might be over complicated, your other concept would probably work better.

If it wasn't for those pesky gun turrets, they'd have a large flattop ready to go on the upper hull. Maybe make them retractable during recovery ops and have the deck serviced by a high speed endless loop elevator or armored ramps that give access to the hanger decks.

Having access shutes on the top between the cannons is an interesting idea. Maybe a hatch or drop platform that responds to friendlies allowing them to land on the deck below. Then they could be moved either under their own power, through a tube/shute, on a conveyor belt, by hook system, etc. Seems a little complicated though, maybe there could be hatches there for emergency or rapid recovery operations.

I thought about the top being a perfect place for an "old school" flight ndeck, but that would necessitate removing the turrets as you point out. And they are clearly there in the series...

I think one of my ideas would be sufficient to meet the operational needs of the REF without having a topside deck for recovery.

in Macross VF's landed on the hull elevator in guardian form, and a shuttle landed the same way. might not be ideal, but a guardian mode landing on the top or bottom hull would certainly be a viable method.. of course in space, you could technically do this in fighter mode by matching speed and then using thrusters to land. (like vipers landing in the flight pods in Battlestar Galactica..)

I was thinking retractable turrets, not removing them.

Doable and not unprecedented in RT. They use them on the SC capital ships.

That must be where I saw them. Weren't the Zentraedi gun turrets the same way?

Yes, ASC and Zentraedi vessels had retractable gun turrets.

I can't see there being a recovery or launch bay in the aft, engine wash would make for some very rough landings, nor can I see the amidship pods slide out like that (the idea of the folding landing strip in the other sketch sounds a lot better).

The forward bays I can easily see being used for launch, that design lends itself very well to the Hayes Maneuver (aka, the Daedalus Punch).

Can't wait to see the final product from all this sketching!

That is easy enough to handle. The engines could ceratinly be secured for flight ops. A ship like the Ikazuchi would likely not be burning it's reaction mass constantly. It isn't necessary. In fact we see them in the series movving without any indication that the engines are actually in use. Once a constant forward momentum us acheived it isn't likely they would use them much at all. So there would be no issue with the Aft Landing bay design. If anything it is the one I feel is least complicated and the most likely solution.

I agree that the sliding pod idea is also rendered moot if either of the other two options are in use.

Thanks! Not sure there will be anything that fully realizes this concept in the near future. But you never know!
