“Stop it!” Topaz shouted desperately. “Just stop it, Azotic! You don’t need to fight me!” She ducked under a swing of the other’s blade with almost no time to spare as Cyel pelted Azotic with her bombs. The small explosives stuck to wherever they landed on the raging Topaz, but were not yet exploding. Periodically, Azotic would furiously claw at them to try and get them off of herself, to no avail. Enough of them, when put together, could make a pretty big blast, but Cyel could only make so many at the time, and she was so to Topaz that it was hard to know when to set them off.

The only thing Topaz could do was dodge her old partner's attacks and hope she didn’t turn her attention onto Cyel. As much as Topaz wanted to tell Cyel to just get out of there, she knew it was a hopeless endeavor; Cyel would refuse of course, so there was no real point to it. Neither one of them were particularly skilled fighters-- well, Cyel wasn’t built for this kind of thing in the first place and Topaz just didn’t have any training. They were quite the pair, weren’t they?

That was it!

“Cyel!” Topaz threw her hand out to the Tourmaline. Without having to explain what her plan was, Cyel immediately understood and took her hand. Topaz gave her a twirl and a dip, knowing they didn’t have enough time to do anything very fancy. Their gems glowed and their forms began to shift and melt together, and Rhodochrosite began to take form.

Suddenly, however, Azotic’s blade cut right through the middle of the forming fusion and she took two halves in her hands, pulling them apart. Cyel was thrown one way and Topaz, the other. Both clattered and rolled across the ground, landing with pained groans. Recovering seemingly quicker than Cyel was, Topaz pried her eyes open. She could see Cyel across the way, laying on the edge of cliff. Below, the kindergarten loomed, ready to swallow up the Gem she cared about the most; she wasn’t going to let that happen.

Wincing and struggling to sit up, she turned her attention to Azotic, who was simply standing there watching her. “This is your fault.” Azotic muttered, her expression cold, unwaveringly unsympathetic. “I’m the way I am because of you.”

“You’re wrong,” Topaz remained in her place on the ground, trying to gather the resolve to keep fighting. “Only you can decide who you are. This is your choice, not mine.”

“I, am an Azotic Topaz!” she shouted, placing a hand over her chest. “And you, are an Imperial Topaz! Because of what you took from me!”

Topaz struggled, but she stood up to her feet finally, battered but still mostly unharmed. She shook her head incredulously. “That wasn’t my fault! What-- who we were supposed to be.. It was a mistake, an imbalance in the geode, I couldn’t stop it, the Peridots that made us couldn’t stop it, Pink Diamond couldn’t stop it!” She held her hands out to Azotic, pleading for her to understand. “I didn’t purposely steal nutrients from you, I would never do anything like that. We weren’t even sentient, Azotic, just a bunch of goopy mushy stuff in the ground!”

“I don’t want to hear your excuses.” She growled through clenched teeth. “We were supposed to be Twilight together, and you took that from me so you could become an Imperial. I’ll never forgive you.”

“Azotic, I-”

Grabbing her by the hem of her shirt, Azotic lifted Topaz up and pulled her face close to her own. “I said, I don’t want to hear it!” She tossed her towards the edge of the cliff, right beside Cyel, who was only now opening her eyes. “I should have shattered you the first time, I let my emotions get in the way. No more.” As she drew nearer, she raised her disk, preparing to bring it down on Topaz. “Goodbye.”

“NO!” Cyel threw her hand out, and the small explosives that she’d thrown earlier all exploded at once; the blast was enough to send Azotic flying backwards, but incidentally, it sent them in the opposite direction, over the cliff of the kindergarten. The blast was so strong and close to the edge, in fact, that the cliff was defaced and a portion of it began to crack and crumble.

The two were falling for what felt like forever, and they hit the ground-- hard. There was no time to react to the pain of such an impact, however; a big slab of dead earth was about to collide with them; they’d be buried, just like Topaz had been in the beginning. Refusing to let anything like that happened to Cyel, Topaz lifted her arms and caught the giant chunk of earth, barely holding it above them.

“Topaz!” Cyel shouted, holding a hand out, as if she could somehow help her hold it.

“MOVE!” she could strain out, her eyes clenched shut. “I can’t hold it much longer!”

“But-”

“GO!”

Cyel immediately scrambled from underneath the crumbled cliff-face, gesturing for Topaz to hurry. “Come on! Get out from there!” She seemed to hesitate some, trying to decide whether or not she could make the distance after she let go. Knowing she didn’t really have a choice, Topaz released the stone and shot out from underneath. It seemed as though she was going to clear the distance, but the rock landed on the lower-half of Topaz’s torso, and instantaneously, her form dissipated in a cloud of white; her gem clattered to the ground.

Wasting no time, the Tourmaline snatched her gem up and cradled it close to her chest, wide eyes peering up from where they had fallen. Azotic was leaning over the edge with an expression of… Relief? Cyel couldn’t have been sure, because moments later, Azotic was gone; she didn’t follow them down.
