edit: oops, title. man, I hate that deviantart uses the file name titles

I KNOW I KNOW lined paper is evil. Still, it makes for a great template when creating species, so you can better judge the proportions. Anyways, originally these where supposed to be all Australian species, but I did more research and found that protoceratops (the ancestor of the top two saurids) were found nowhere near Australia. So instead they will be an Asian species. These are CARNIVOROUS ceratopsids, not gentle plant eaters like their cousins. Funnily these were originally supposed to be late Triassic psudosuchids, but I changed them to ceratopsids when I started working on modern dinosaurids. They're actually based on these clip on dresses  that my little sister owns. I swear, they look like heads! (and thus they shall be called "dress heads", what I've been calling them all along).

The post-titanosaurs on the bottom are from Australia, the only place sauropods are still found. They have several adaptations to overcome the heat, including raised spines and large, heavily veined throat wattles to vent heat out of. Their nostrils are also enlarged, allowing to better vent heat. This makes their skull resemble the long extinct brachiosaurids. If sauropods ever had filaments, they're gone now due to the fact they would just be too hot. the larger species on the left lives in the tropical eucalyptus groves, while the smaller species live in more arid regions with shorter vegetation.

Yeah, sauropods were never my strong suit :/ It's partially the reason I've killed most of them off in this world...

What are the titanosaurs called?

Haven't thought of scientific names yet, but the big one is a eucalyptus tower-titan, and the smaller two are the greater and common plains wanderers. I'll probably come up with better names though. Did you have anything in mind?

Just 'Tower-titan' would be good for the big sauropod, but maybe the smallest one could be an 'outback wanderer' and the midsize one can be a 'gumtree nomad,' and give the latter a liking for the sap of gumtrees.

I like those names way more. And the gum tree thing! Mind if I use these?

I was curious, are these based on real dinosaurs? or are the purely fictional?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

legendguard In reply to DuneTheZangoose [2015-05-31 03:05:14 +0000 UTC]

Well, protoceratops and titanosaurs, their ancestors, are real creatures, but these are fictional creatures based on the idea if the K-12 never happened and these creatures continued on as if nothing ever happened (and evolved accordingly). So the species on the paper are fictional, but their ancestors are not.

Yeah, the K-12 is  believed to be the mass extinction event ~65 mya that wiped out a good chunk of life, including all non avian dinosaurs. Surprisingly though, it's only the second worst mass extinction event, the first being the End Permian mass extinction. More on mass extinctions  (if you're interested )

Exactly! It's believed that the amount of dust thrust up into the air blocked out the sun, killing most of the vegetation and collapsing the food chain.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Extincti…

It's just a Wikipedia link explaining the "big five" mass extinctions and other smaller mass extinctions
