Description
Since I'm very close to inking my first contract for a story in this science fiction universe, I figured I'd share an earlier map from the era of "What Good Fathers Do" (and "The Captain and the Crown"). The galaxy is a slightly different place in 3461, but still recognizable for anyone looking back from 3530.Map Key:
-Gold=The Eleutherian League. The League is a loose federation of sixteen star systems dedicated to liberty, human rights, and minimal government. Systems oversee their own internal affairs, enabling coexistence between ideologies as diverse as the classical liberals of Eleutheria, the libertarian socialists of Apocu, and the Christian anarchists of Redoubt. The League limits itself to diplomacy, defense, arbitrating between member systems, and protecting the individual rights outlined by the League Charter. Control of the trade routes linking frontier star systems with the Expansion Belt and Old Worlds has allowed the League to become a major economic and military power despite its relatively small size and noninterventionist--even isolationist--tendencies.
-Red=The People's Republic of Nebesa. The PRN is a sprawling fifty-system star nation. Many of its members belonged to the original Republic of Nebesa, while others have been conquered by the Nebesan People's Navy. The reasons behind this expansionism vary widely: a desire to acquire unique resources, to control trade routes formed by the hyperbridges, to neutralize neighbors whose political ideologies might destabilize Nebesa, etc. These additions have led Nebesa to become a diverse and multicultural society, though the influence of its original Ukrainian colonists is obvious in everything from language to cuisine. Long at odds with the Eleutherians over ideology and envious of their favorable astrographic position, Nebesa has embarked on a war of conquest against the League. NPN based in Ternopil and Skoropadskyi launched a two-pronged offensive against Eleutheria and Sickle in the hopes of forcing a quick capitulation or, at the very least, to split the League in half. This offensive ultimately failed thanks to the heroic sacrifice of Captain Zamile Kani, ELN.
-Pink=The Algonquian Union. Founded by Algonquian peoples tired of national and international authorities becoming increasingly intrusive as climate change on Earth worsened, the Union is a democratic republic which places a heavy emphasis on the preservation of their traditional culture and identity. They refrain from meddling in interstellar affairs, much like the League, but are far less open to immigration and trade than the Eleutherians.
-Purple=The Kingdom of Quetzal. Quetzal is a rarity in the modern galaxy: a feudal monarchy encompassing multiple star systems. House Ordóñez has ruled Quetzal since its founding, often with a surprisingly steady, even-handed approach to governance. This has begun to change over the past few generations, with Queen Sofia ruthlessly suppressing all dissent and singlehandedly triggering hyperinflation through reckless spending. When her security forces massacred demonstrators at a mass protest outside the palace, a bloody civil war erupted. Millions of refugees have fled to the League through Soleco, where warships of the Royal Quetzali Navy flagrantly violate the League's sovereignty by attempting to force them to return to Quetzal.
-Green=Kingdom of Heiau. Centered on the aquatic world of Heiau, this single-system star nation is isolated by Ryder Barrens. Only a single hyperbridge links Heiau to the rest of the galaxy, which has prevented the Heiauans from fully exploiting the tourism potential of their crystal clear waters and white sand beaches. Heiau is heavily dependent on the export of seafood, iridescent pearls, and abalone from its vast oceans, but the titanic interstellar corporation Finch Capital is threatening to destroy these sources of natural wealth through overfishing. Many members of Parliament are on its payroll, and the only reason Finch Capital hasn't sought to annex the system is the monarchy retaining firm control of the Royal Heiauan Navy.
-Blue=Republic of Ithaca. Founded by Greek settlers in the 30th century, Ithaca sits at the juncture of several hyperlanes branching out from the Scherian Gap. This valuable astrographic position allowed the Ithacans to prosper despite possessing a single habitable world in a single star system. Duties on interstellar trade enabled Ithaca to establish mining colonies in the asteroid belts, which form the bedrock of vibrant space-based industries. Only Eleutheria and the megacorporations of Gulch can compete with Ithacan shipping lines, which have made the system one of the most prosperous beyond the Scherian Gap. This wealth enables Ithaca to field a modestly powerful military--the Ithacan Star Corps--which suppresses piracy and the interstellar slave trade in conjunction with other star nations like the Eleutherian League.
-Gray=Goídelic Raiders. Refugees from the corporate world of Gulch, the Goídel resorted to piracy and raiding their neighbors to survive in an incredibly sparse corner of the galaxy. The Goídel possess a clan-based society with status centered around which individuals and warbands can collect the most wealth on raids.
-White=Unclaimed
-Dotted Lines=Hyperbridges. Hyperbridges are natural phenomena allowing faster-than-light travel between connected star systems, which has led to the emergence of trade routes and a degree of "geography" in space. Note how anyone headed to the systems beyond the Cygnus Rift and Ryder Barrens must travel through the Eleutherian League.
