her side view is really odd , but you never really see it
her back hump is higher than the head

I miss Rob Bottin's creations
he really pushed things to the extreme
Rick Baker comes across as sort of more restrained and conservative

I think in the early of effects people had much more free range on what they could do, as people didn't have much to base something off of. Like if someone wanted a Gorgon they had some freedom on what it could look like, now days like when they did the new Clash of the Titans they just say they want something the original flick. Despite the fact that its looks a bit different from the one from mythology.

Part of the problem now , is that it seems like the same handful of designers are coming up with the monsters
they are all blending into one and looking generic
It seems like in the 80's movie makers started to look further afield for inspiration , employing H R Giger and Brian Froud etc to get a distinct look

It all goes back to the same issue, the most original can be successful but it also means taking a chance and it seems too many Hollywood producers aren't keen on such things. It used to be that the Xenomorphs from Alien were such a unique creature that struck fear in the hearts and minds of viewers. Now it's the most recognized of aliens in pop culture, appearing on the every movie poster it's featured in, and on T-shirts everywhere. It's a perfect example of over saturation.

The Alien has been over exposed ,
the original glimpses of him , were disturbing , But it seems to be as much a sort of watering down of the design
The mechanoid aspects are almost gone , , he's more like a dinosaur with a weird shaped head these days

I always pictured it more as a giant ugly ass scorpion
I think it was better when he was a guy in a suit, the sinister movements have completes gone since special effects

Giger seemed to design the alien to have most of the elements that humans fear
skeletal , , bugs , slimy , snake like
I much preferred when it looked like a very tall thin , humanoid
from alien 3 onwards , it's gotten smaller and more like a raptor

I noticed it's shape change over time, and I think the special effects have really killed it's image. For the smaller xenomorph in Covenant I can understand but the bigger versions really fell apart

even from aliens , the idea that the xenomorph has a penis shaped head , just felt redundant
he only worked in the first movie , with giger's phallic and vaginal designs

I'd kind of like to see a Xenomorph go up against Sil, that'd be pretty epic to watch.
Giger has a mind for strange alien anatomy and forms, can't say I'd like to see what he dreams of. Looks like the stuff that'd give Lovecraft nightmares.

He does carry a lot of Lovecraftian elements, but also with traces of organic machinery in it that makes the subjects less human.
Like Lovecraft he created his own unique style that captures the imagination of the viewers

I watched the first episode of The Terror :Infamy
It has nothing to do with the original , not even behind the camera etc , it's just using the name
really lacks menace , feels too tame and mundane at the moment
Chernobyl actually felt more like a sequel to the terror , in it's structure and tone

I saw an episode of Chernobyl and it did feel very Terror like, not just on account of Jared Harris in it. I'll have to check out the Terror some time in the next few days.
All I know is that it's got George Takei. His was the only name I recognized and that's because his work in Star Trek

The actor who played Cornelius Hickey is also in Chernobyl as a dying firefighter and the music is from the same people
but it's really the tone and pacing that reminds me of The Terror , it's doom laden
so far takei , is not in the terror infamy very much , but he did act as an adviser
As a child he was locked up in one of he wartime camps

Hippy282 In reply to Legrande62 [2019-08-19 05:37:07 +0000 UTC]
I didn't know about that wartime camp thing. That was a surprise.
I think the other thing about the Chernobyl series is that the horror is very much real, and it's all stuff that actually happened and is likely to occur again.
Which I think enhances the doom factor

I sort of had a vague knowledge of the camps
we had the same thing at this end for German immigrants
the japanese camps did make sense ,
Hawaii had been awash with japanese spies, posing as tourists , just prior to pearl harbor , and the USA had a real fear of invasion straight after that attack
Episode 2 of Infamy is now available , perhaps it will start to shape up a bit
Hard to see where it is going at the moment
As you said , part of the sense of doom in The Terror 1 and chernobyl was the recreation of real events and people
Not a lot actually happened in those camps and none of the characters were real people

I don't know if my country had any camps like that but I do know we had Italian prisoners of war. Apparently they were very well behaved. I heard stories that the guards would let some out to do errands for them like giving them money to get cigarettes and they always came back. A lot of them ended up staying and becoming citizens.

a similar thing happened in wales
french soldiers were sent by Napoleon to invade , but ended up , just staying there marrying welsh girls and raising families
I've not seen the second episode of the Terror infamy yet , but i read a detailed review and it sounds like it isn't getting much better
It seems like they are trying to pack too much in and rushing through scenes

I read the plot outlines on IMBD and it's hard to say if it gets any better , it looks like it just plods along
it has a couple of problems , the story isn't as compelling as the first season and it's just not so well done
It just seems very mundane from , music to the way it's directed
it should have been it's own thing and not used the Terror" banner"
The Franklin expedition disaster , kind of had a built in audience , there's a lot of interest in the subject matter of Artic exploration at that point in history
The same viewers aren't going to sit through something about Japanese internment in world war 2, It's just too different and there's not enough supernatural stuff and zero felling of dread
I wish they had gone with a Donner party recreation ,It's never been told properly and has the right sense of doom and horror
if needs be, they could mix a bit of supernatural /wendigo stuff in with it

Hippy282 In reply to Legrande62 [2019-08-26 05:56:52 +0000 UTC]
A wendigo version of the Donner Party incident would have made a better story.
I finally watched the first two eps of the new Terror, I gotta say it's pretty underwhelming. They seem to be trying to cram too much in at once. The idea is nice but the execution seems to have fallen apart.
It reminds me a little of The Thing with everyone in the camp suspicious of one another being something they're not. Which ties into the whole Japanese spy angle. But it just doesn't have the same feel as the first season.
I think they should have picked another story line.

It seems unfocused
The stuff with Chester and his mexican girlfriend is like a bad soap opera
nothing seems to have much impact
the bit where the guy was forced onto thin ice , would have worked better if you actually had got to know the character
and they kill him in episode 4 or something so it's a shock
the same with the father getting shot , it just sort of happened
what set pieces they do have, just aren't standing out
plus there is no actual Terror to speak of ! , the camp isn't that bad { We aren't talking Auschwitz } and the supernatural stuff isn't nasty enough

It looks like they're just rushing into it, not really giving people time to know any of the characters in it. It's like they only care about the important ones. At least in the first season you got to know a lot of the crew as they went about their duties on ship. If it gets a third season I think it'll just end up with the same thing

Same here, I was looking forward to it and now I'm just disappointed that they couldn't even come close to living up to the standard set by the first. Is this one even based on a book or is it just something someone had an idea to continue the series? Cause it feels like the ladder.

It lacks the kind of dream like feel of the first series
the use of staged scenery and cgi for nearly every scene ,
gave the Terror a sort of artistic heightened realism
This series just looks like every other
the music is really weak as well!

Well the third episode is online
It's still a bit soapy , but has a nasty ending apparently
I'm not sure where it's going though
It really needs to keep to the internment camp and establish better characters
I'm hoping an Enuit indian will be locked in with hem and bring a Tuunbaq with them
It would at least liven it up
Have you seen theres some new footage inside the wreck of HMS terror
Clear images of Croziers bunk bed area and storage drawers
Theres hope of a captain's log being found

Hippy282 In reply to Legrande62 [2019-09-02 05:59:40 +0000 UTC]
That would be interesting. The Tuunbaq and the Captains log thing I mean.
I understand the idea of the current season's thought that the people in the internment camp are also experiencing the fear that one of them is not like the rest. A traitor which fits in with what's happening, I like that but it's the rest of what they're doing that seems to killing the story. It'd be nice if someone in the series mentions something of the Terror expedition as a nice little easter egg.
I'd like to hear more about the true expedition, any new information would interesting.

I've seen two episodes
i'm impressed but not crazy about it yet { apparently it starts to really take off , mid way}
nice to see the Skeksi castle brought to life as a huge building , rather than the originals little model and a few paintings
at the moment the series is giving me a weird 60% dark crystal , 40 % Far scape vibe
not sure if it's the way it's filmed or what

It's true it does take off mid way. I really like the Skeksi character The Heretic, he's a complete nutter.
But the show does get surprisingly dark. Murders and betrayals left right and centre, not for kids at all. It gets real hectic!

i will watch the rest
i have a fascination with movie stuff being "recreated" a long time after the original set or costume/mask has gone
for sequel flash backs etc
Aliens for example rebuilding the set of the life craft for the opening , the end of the Thing prequel , and so on
a bad example is yodas puppet for phantom Menace
this dark crystal series is a prime example , bringing back all the Skeksis , their crystal room and the castle
It's weird seeing it recreated and in such detail after so long
They've done a pretty good job of it
the rubber used for the skeksis faces looks more silicon than foam { A bit translucent }and that makes them look a tiny bit "off "
But it's still a great achievement
i notice they were going through Brian Froud's original concepts , the skeksi with war paint for eample

I like how each Skeksii still has their own unique personality. In this iteration they've had time to add more of a personal touch to each of them.
It also allows more understanding to their species, customs, and even rituals. I'd like to see a bit more of the Mystics at some point though.

They'd probably need to have a long of arm strength for it, not just the weight of it all on their arms but also keeping it in position for so long. I think that the people in those costumes have a much harder time than the actors. More so when they don't even have the use of their eyes and just wander around blindly making sure not to bump into anything
