Yeeeeees yeeees, we all agree it's not vectors but rasters, and we all agree with :devmrpumpernikel:, and we all agree that PhotoShop isn't the best program to create vector art, or rasters, if you will, but it looks like vector art, so it's fine with me.
Nice tut.

The reason it bothers me that you haven't changed the title to "Lemontea's Definitive Rasters-That-Look-Like-Vectors Guide" (And even that is silly, because not all vector work looks the same. One can create "vector-like work" on paper with the right tools, and a steady hand. Etc.) is because this will perpetuate an incorrect idea/definition in the minds of the uninformed. As it has been said above, rasters are rasters, and vectors are vectors. By knowingly misnaming something, you help to dilute the language. We see proof of that in the comments above. People who are new to the world of computer-based art have seen this guide, and have scampered off to create what they are now calling vectors. More dilution.
Beyond that, I personally cannot understand why people try to create vector work in PhotoShop. Why not use the proper tool for the job? The results are 100% better, and more useable.
Because I see no point in using a raster programme to create vectors, this guide doesn't do much more than any "in progress screen shot" can do. At best, it can give someone idea of where to start on a new illustration.

You know what's funny, version two of this tutorial kept the same name. [link]
Why do you ask? Because it's not raster, but of course! Photoshop vector masks are completely resizable, their DPI can be adjusted, and they have the same adjustable points just like in Illustrator. Photoshop is like Illustrator lite, in all practical uses.
This is a vector, will be a vector, and will stay a vector. If it's not a vector in Photoshop, then how can it be a vector when I convert it to Illustrator? Just because of the final rendering method, it doesn't mean it's not a vector.
So thanks, I just wanted to inform you that I can do everything I need to do with Photoshop... I don't even use Illustrator any more.

i don't see why this is THE vector tutorial (when it isn't really a vector one, but i'm not gonna pick on that). i've got a real small tutorial that deals with the same issue as yours. maybe you ought to see it, it's not much but has the same content and idea. it's called "The Bean -o- Lator" and it's between the Tutorials > misc.

Thank you for the tut. It at least gives me an idea of where to start with doing vectors. I tried doing my own vector using what I learndd from this and it turned out halfway decent. I enjoyed using the pen tool. Now I think i will go try to pirate a copy of Illustrator so I can see what all the raving is about.

i only like the eye part in this tutorial...
no offence.. but ur vectors could be cleaner...
and i dun think u explained how to use shading and stuff very well....
theres a good vector tutorial on devart somewhere.. the one with jesesica alba...
--------------
here comes some crits to help you improve your tutorial...
no offence to your vector art or anything... but you really dont incorporate use of shading into your art...you always just do lines and stuff like that.. now whilst you can do that.. granted it looks good.. on your image.. well it kinda sux.. no offence... and the like lines you've done... its all choppy.. and argh.. your really just gonna havta keep playing with it to get it better...
as a tutorial.. its not bad.. i mean it explains things nicely and easily yeah... but i think you should have like different subheadings.. then explain things in steps... or the stages.. and then have like a comment on why or what...
----
o and lastly... nice tutorial.. it'll help alot of people.. but ppl.. EXPERIMENTATION... vectors arent that hard to figure out... just do shapes... thas it really....
---
the eye part is very useful though...

LMAO.. as an Illustrator guru I can't help but laugh at the concept of people trying to make vector with photoshop.. its just absurd.
C'mon peeps the pen tool isn't that hard. Dur dur anchor point and control lines.. Sheesh it even has all the photoshop filters built in. That should be reason alone for most noobs to go pirate it.

Well, if you ever return from your leave, I will say that I can do exactly what you do in Illustrator now. I was using the pen tool in photoshop, creating vector masks. For simple things, Photoshop has all you need, plus the ability to resize, change dpi, and edit points just like in Illustrator.

I dont mean to be the prick that I'm being by not 'being supportive' not being 'positive' and not being...well nice...but it really isn't A.) A vector tutorial (had to say it again), B.) a Good Vexel tutorial, or C.) Hours worth of time. I mean granted, for someone who may not know HTML very well it may have taken 'hours' to complete, and while the art is better than average vexel art, it's...just not much. I mean personally I think Vexel/Vector art like this is crap anyway, as generic as that damn 3ds-max randomizing with a few 'photoshop touchups' of a Light Flare render, so to begin with it's a tutorial about a crappy artform. Granted any crappy artform can come out and do something cool and worth while but you didn't include anything like that in this tutorial.
As far as the HTML coding, it really shouldn't have taken more than an hour AT MOST to code that entire thing. As for the tutorial itself, there's what? 30 pictures in there? Maybe another hour. At what you said it seemed as though it was a weekend project. At quick glance there's 4 pictures on that tutorial, the rest are just 'click back three steps in the PS history and screenshot', or zoom in and screenshot. One your friend did, you didn't work on that.
Again, sorry to be the uncaring bastard who had to come and crush 'some poor kid's' dream (cause everyone on Deviant art gets hurt by words and never sticks and stones, damn emo kids CHEER UP!) of being a great 'vector artist' but that's like saying I crushed a kid's dream of taking his own feces and making art out of it, IT NEEDS TO BE CRUSHED, so as a preemptive call, quit spamming me you damn emo-kids.

--- In response to the ***EDIT at the end of your description, the stuff you did for this tutorial in photoshop IS in fact VECTOR. You can easily export those same vector lines and shape to Illustrator .ai files, only extra work you'll have to do in re-insert the colors into the shapes again. If you don't like illustrator, other vector programs accept Illustrator .ai files.
Also if you have Adobe acrobat distiller you can just file>print to the distiller and it'll create a .pdf file with all the colors intact so you wont have to recolor. Only problem I find with that is it usually turns the path shapes into clipping paths on top of raster images of the color as the fill. So it'll be the same smooth vector shapes, but filled with rasterized color, which increases the file size if it's something big. So sometimes it might still be a good idea to go into the ai file and remove the raster fills, turn the clipping paths into normal paths and refill them with the color.

Wow, what an awesome, awesomely great tutorial. I especially liked that Bill Clinton in there. Even though it was an example of what NOT to do, I still think it was the best picture there. I found a lot of usefull things in the first part, but I think everybody would agree with me that the SECOND part is definitaly the more usefull part.

vector art is a favorite recent passtime of mine- I read the tutorial and I would be glad to give you a few more tips if you want, help you do some more complex vector art and maybe cut down the time it is taking you as well.
Cool tutorial though- thanks on behalf of vector enthusiasts
