Description Hi!

A long time ago somone asked me to post a tutorial about how I work. Here it is!
I start with a sketch, then I ink it.
After scanning in low resolution, I turn it into hard pixels and transform it in vectors.
From vectos, I export it as a high resolution image, which is ready for colors.
That's how I clean little useless spots and make the traces smooth. That also allows me to make poster size images from little doodles.
The programs I use are Gimp and Inkscape. They're light, easy to find and for free.
If you know an easier way to do it, please tell me.

Hope you like it!
Cheers!

Great tutor. I use Inkscape at work all the time for to trace logos - I'm a signmaker - and nothing beats it, not even Illustrator. It has the most powerful tracing tool I've ever seen - and I've being doing this work for 20 years -

Thank you. Inkscape is a fantastic program. I´ve tried the others, but  I still think it´s the best option for what I do.

Can you do one on GIMP?

Both Gimp and Inkscape are required to follow the instructions of this tutorial. But it may be possible to use photoshop instead of gimp, or illustrator instead of inkscape, with little adjustments.

How can you do this using photoshop?

I don´t know. I only use Gimp. But maybe it isn´t too different.

How are you doing the colors in gimp? I'm able to fill in each area with it's own color, but would like to know how are you able to do the two and three color combinations to create shadowing with the colors.

great technique---yes it works, but you have to experiment a few times, and make sure you select the gif image first---I'll be using this to make smoother artwork from now on.

I found that the best looking lines for my work is with the brightness cutoff with a threshold of .800

HOW.

I can't understant step 3. How i transform in vector lines?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

lenechaves In reply to Wakettina [2013-08-24 12:39:08 +0000 UTC]

1 - Use Inkscape to open the gif file.
2 - Click on the gif image to select it.
3 - Click on Path>Trace Bitmap.
4 - Set up your preferences and click OK.
A vector image will be formed over the pixelated image.

Tip: Move the vector image a little and you will see the gif image in a layer under it. For better results, delete the gif image when the vector image is done.

Aw, doesn't work. I don't know why, but "ok" button don't do anything. But thanks for the help!

lenechaves In reply to Wakettina [2013-08-24 13:28:23 +0000 UTC]

It usually happens when we forget to select the gif image.
You must click on the gif image before clicking Path>Trace Bitmap>OK.
If it still doesn't work, I think that there must be a problem with your program or something.

Thanks for the tutorial. In step 3 can you please explain more on how exactly you transform the pixelated lines to vector lines. What options do you use/short cuts? I'm new to Inkscape.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

lenechaves In reply to EchoChase [2013-05-07 02:25:23 +0000 UTC]

You're welcome.
After you have opened the pixelated gif file in Inkscape program, you'll need to click on the pixelated image to select it. Then you click on Path > Trace Bitmap. A box will be opened. There'll be many options and preferences to configure. After you set up your preferences, click on the "OK" button in the right down corner of the box. A vector image will appear in a layer over the pixelated image.
It'll probably be a little difficult to find the best preferences for the vector image but I'm sure you'll figure it out after you have tried some times.
Hope it'll help. Good luck!

tu saberia me dizer o pq? D:

lenechaves In reply to jumbopaulo [2012-03-04 14:28:29 +0000 UTC]

lenechaves In reply to jumbopaulo [2012-03-04 22:08:49 +0000 UTC]

Eu uso o próprio Gimp pra colorir.

Oh...i thought you draw such lines on PC\Photoshop from very beginning. Never knew there is a program that transforms pixelated scan into super smooth vector..."
So there IS button "Make it Awesome"? (i mean many artists of Photoshop have a joke about "there is no button that says Make It Awesome")

Qualquer dúvida, pode me perguntar!

Demooooooraaaaa.... Hahaha.

lenechaves In reply to lopinho [2011-12-20 12:40:59 +0000 UTC]
