part II: [link]

PHEW!

ok so like i said, i've been working on a book binding tutorial, since i know that i would've been so grateful for something like this back when i didn't have a clue how to make a book but really wanted too

this took me all day, so i hope it's helpful, and i hope you can understand what i'm going on about xD some parts were really difficult to explain in writing...
and it includes all my secrets, so i hope those of you who do give it a go appreciate it!

obviously this is only part I, and it includes making your covers and inside pages. hopefully i'll be able to put more work into finishing it tomorrow, otherwise i won't be able to get the rest up till after christmas and you'll all be stuck with half a book lol!

this is going to be the same style of book as this one: [link]
in case you were interested in having a look at what it will look like when it's done

ANYWAY. if you do take a stab at bookmaking and you use my tutorial give me a shout, i'd love to see how you do!

and if there are any questions so far, post them here and i'll gladly answer them if i can

Wow, this is awesome! I'll have to try it some time. Thanks for sharing

I was wondering, how big of a difference is it to use leather vs. paper vs. ribbon for the spine? Do the leather-spined ones outlive the others?

lenoki In reply to mingolando [2009-01-11 08:58:29 +0000 UTC]

that's actually a good question, and although i havn't got any books old enough to tell you for sure, i can imagine that since leather in itself is a much hardier material it would wear alot better than either paper or any other ribbon/cloth. leather would also be tougher if you were to get your book wet, whereas paper would probably disintergrate.. sorry i can't give you a definate answer!

That's an amazing tutorial! I've already tried to make sketch pads (followed a different tutorial), and I have a little tip: you can use some old book, opened somewhere in the middle, as a stand when making holes through signatures

I can't wait for the second part!

that's a great idea! saves you having to make a stand like i did thankyou! (second part is up!)

Its awesome to see other people out there enjoy binding books!!! I've always wanted to compile a tutorial since a lot of people asked how i make them. xD You've really made me want to bind books again xDD The stitching seems much easier then how i've learned, it looks like a simple western case, though I could be wrong. Does the particular stitch have a name? x3

also - awesome finished product. :3

lenoki In reply to LeaveMeAlone-NOW [2008-12-09 00:04:35 +0000 UTC]

i do believe it is just a simple coptic stitch however.. i learnt this one a looonnnggg long time ago, so i could be wrong xD

lol i know what you mean, they can be so addictive to make! if i ever see any by other people i have to jump right back into making them myself :B

LeaveMeAlone-NOW In reply to lenoki [2008-12-09 01:20:25 +0000 UTC]

I've ran out of glue xD And I refuse to use white glue to make one! It just gets everywhere in a horrible un-drying mess x__X
I've never tried a coptic stich :3 But I think I will, since western case bindings take too long.

It's still awesome to see someone else looking at making books as art and not something horribly nerdy and pointless :B

Oh man, you are awesome *_*
I've been meaning to dig around for a good binding tutorial. All I know how to make are accordion books, which are nice if you have a series of images and want to have them presented together as a complete package. That's pretty much all its good for. Accordion books dont really work if you want to make sketchbooks
So yea, thanks for sharing your secrets, Im definitely going to try this out :'D

lenoki In reply to cockrocket [2008-12-09 00:06:58 +0000 UTC]

oh, i know what you mean D: they're more for display purposes.. not very practical for drawing in or the likes.
well i hope you have fun making one, and if you have any problems feel free to come badger me :B

Thank you so much for putting this up! I'm really looking forward to the rest of it. It's ironic because when you posted that sketchbook, I actually thought 'Man, I'd love to find a tutorial on how to do that.' And then you did one! You rock so much!

I'll definitely credit you when I find time to give it a try. Thanks for the hard work.

Yeah, I'm sure it will be. I've tried book binding before and followed a few tutorials for it, but it's never turned out well for me. Hopefully I get the courage to try it again.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

lenoki In reply to Cattereia [2008-12-08 13:13:17 +0000 UTC]

haha well i think you should! i know how hard it is to follow bookbinding tutorials, since you really need someone to actually sit down and show you with their hands.. but who knows, maybe you can piece it together with bits and pieces from different tutorials
good luck if you decide to have a try!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Cattereia In reply to lenoki [2008-12-08 13:17:11 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, it's rather difficult to do artisan crafts by following tutorials. I was doing an origami thing the other week and spent an hour trying to figure out a certain step and why it wouldn't work. It turned out that the step was telling my to fold a flap under another flap, but because of the drawings, I couldn't really tell that it was telling me to slip it under the fold rather than just fold it down. It was a little... frustrating. Oo'
Thanks. I'll definitely show you if I do end up doing it.
