Description Alex: "0__0; That's a lot of Goombas..."

Me: "Tell me about it..."

What Mario game would it be without these persistant creatures? Here are the Goombas of Paper Mario Darkness in Time

You should know about the Goombas, Paragoombas, and Spiked Goombas, but allow me to talk about the newest addition to the "Family Tree", the Helmet Goomba.

Inspired by the helmet-wearing Goombas from the Galaxy series, the Helmet Goombas have a point of defense, meaning that, at this point of the game, your jump will do nothing to it and your hammer will only d 1 damage. They also can't be flipped over, unlike Koopa Troopas. So it might be long and troublesome if it wasn't for their low HP (facing multiples of these, however, might be another story).

Anyway, moving on to the tattles (there are a LOT):

Goomba:
"That's a Goomba. You know all about Goombas since they're pretty common in the Mushroom Kingdom. Max HP is 2, Attack is 1, and Defense is 0. They can headbonk you, but that's pretty much it. These Goombas aren’t really much of a threat at all. Any attack can pretty much defeat them easily."

Paragoomba:
"That's a Paragoomba. A Goomba that has grown wings, as you see. Max HP is 2, Attack is 1, and Defense is 0. Just like regular Goombas, they’re not much of a threat. It's flying, though, so your Hammer won't hit it. Jumping on it, however, will get rid of the wings."

Spiked Goomba:
"That's a Spiked Goomba. A Goomba with a spiked helmet, as you see. Max HP is 2, Attack is 2, and Defense is 0. Even though they’re still not much of a threat, they’re more powerful than regular Goombas. That helmet not only increases its attack power, but it also damages you when you jump on it, so don't do it."

Helmet Goomba:
"That's a Helmet Goomba. A Goomba wearing a sturdy helmet, as you see. Max HP is 2, Attack is 1, and Defense is 1. That helmet is really hard and sturdy, so not much of your attacks will go through it. A rather annoying Goomba compared to most Goombas. But using a very strong attack will knock them out easily."

Gloomba:
"That's a Gloomba, a Goomba that lives in dark and dank places like the Toad Town Tunnels. Their blue color is due to lack of sunlight. Max HP is 5, Attack is 2, and Defense is 0. Despite the higher stats, Gloombas aren't much different than regular Goombas. That's really all I have to say..."

Paragloomba:
"That's a Paragloomba, a Gloomba with wings. They live in the Toad Town Tunnels due to the dankness of these tunnels. Max HP is 5, Attack is 2, and Defense is 0. Despite their higher stats, they're not much different than regular Gloombas. Remember that you can get rid of their wings by jumping on them. I would like to know why those wings aren't moldy."

Spiked Gloomba:
"That's a Spiked Gloomba, a Gloomba equipped with a spiked helmet. They live in dark and dank places. Max HP is 5, Attack is 3, and Defense is 0. Spiked Gloombas are just like regular Spiked Goombas, only with higher stats. Don't jump on them or you'll take damage."

Helmet Gloomba:
"That's a Helmet Gloomba, a Gloomba equipped with a hard helmet. They prefer dark and dank places over everywhere else. Max HP is 5, Attack is 2, and Defense is 1. This is pretty much a stronger version of a regular Helmet Goomba. Remember, their helmet grants them Defense, so use a powerful attack to finish them."

Hyper Goomba:
“That’s a Hyper Goomba, a Goomba that holds a lot of power. And I mean a LOT! Max HP is 8, Attack is 4, and Defense is 0. Hyper Goombas can headbonk you like a regular Goomba, but they can charge up to do a LOT more damage next turn. If you got an ability that can negate the attack, USE IT!”

Hyper Paragoomba:
“That’s a Hyper Paragoomba, a Paragoomba with a ton of power. Max HP is 8, Attack is 4, and Defense is 0. Hyper Paragoombas, like all Hyper enemies, can charge up and do a TON of damage! If you don’t have an ability that can negate the attack, you’re going to get hurt, BADLY!”

Hyper Spiked Goomba:
“That’s a Hyper Spiked Goomba, a Hyper Goomba wearing a spiked helmet. Max HP is 8, Attack is 5, and Defense is 0. Hyper Spiked Goombas can attack us with a headbonk, but they can also charge up and do a TON of damage on the next turn. Hyper Spiked Goombas are considered one of the strongest of the Hyper enemies.”

Hyper Helmet Goomba:
“That’s a Hyper Helmet Goomba, a Hyper Goomba wearing a hard helmet. Max HP is 8, Attack is 4, and Defense is 1. Hyper Helmet Goombas, like all Hyper enemies, can charge up to do a LOT of damage on the next turn. They don’t have much defense, but if you want to finish them quickly, use piercing attacks.”

Snowba:
"That's a Snowba, a Goomba that lives in cold environments. Scans tell me that they are covered completely in snow. Max HP is 12, Attack is 6, and Defense is 0. Snowbas can headbonk you like any other Goombas. Their headbonk, however, will freeze you if you don't guard. If you want to get rid of them fast, fire attacks work well."

Parasnowba:
"That's a Parasnowba, a Snowba with wings. Why those wings aren't covered in ice is beyond me. Max HP is 12, Attack is 6, and Defense is 0. Parasnowbas' dive bombs will freeze you if you don't guard, so watch yourself. Due to being covered in snow, they're weak to fire."

Spiked Snowbas:
"That's a Spiked Snowba, a Snowba with a spiked helmet. That spike on the helmet is made out of the coldest metal in the world. Max HP is 12, Attack is 8, and Defense is 0. Spiked Snowbas can headbonk you in an attempt to freeze you. You'll also get frozen when you try to jump on them, even with a Spike Shield badge. Instead, try using a fire attack."

Helmet Snowba:
"That's a Helmet Snowba, a Snowba with a very hard helmet. The helmet is a lot harder than the other Helmet Goombas. Max HP is 12, Attack is 6, and Defense is 2. Helmet Snowbas can headbonk you, freezing you if you don't guard. That Helmet will protect it from most attacks, even fire attacks."

EDIT: Added in 2 new Goombas to this already giant family tree, the Goomdivers. Here are their tattles:

Goomdiver:
"That’s a Goomdiver, a Goomba that specialize in undersea diving. They work for the Koopa Troop as part of the naval forces. Max HP is 14, Attack is 7, and Defense is 1. Like all Goombas, Goomdivers can headbonk you. However, getting rid of them is a little tricky due to their diving gear which grants Defense. They’re not bad alone, but they’re usually found in groups.”

Spiked Goomdiver:
“That’s a Spiked Goomdiver, a Goomdiver with a lone spike on their diving gear. Max HP is 14, Attack is 9, and Defense is 1. They can headbonk you like a regular Goomba, but their spike increases the strength of their headbonks. That spike also protects them from jump attacks. They are really tough, which makes them elites in the Koopa Troop navy.”

Tell me in the comments what you think. Personally, I like the designs on the Helmet Goomba. (long description is long...) Remember: DON'T STEAL!

Technically, Goomdivers appeared in Mario & Luigi Superstar Saga, but I decided to give them a spiked version. Also, the Helmet Goombas were inspired by the Goombeetles from the Super Mario Galaxy games.

I actually haven't played that yet, so I didn't know. That's pretty awesome, though. And yes, I can guess why they inspired the Helmet Goombas. Still love them.

Hmm, what can we say about these little critters? They're a staple of the Mario bestiary, so it's hard to think of something new...

The new Helmet variant is an interesting touch; plays a more defensive role than the Spiked Goomba, which keeps it from being redundant. We've seen the first three species plenty of times, so nothing to really say there, but the Snowbas are an interesting variation...inspired by the Goomba snow sculptures in SMG, maybe?

Additionally, is it just us, or does Shycan seems rather more...energetic in his scans of the Hyper Goomba species? Must be surprised that the little mushroom dudes can pack such a punch...

Yup.

Yea, I really like the Helmet Goombas because of that. And you could say that about the Snowbas...

Well, he speaks that way for most Hyper enemies considering that fact that they hold a LOT of power. We should be at least lucky that there are no Hyper Bristles anywhere (though I did thought about it at one point).

...We're pretty sure that the heroes would never forgive you if you did that. Especially if you somehow put them in an area where they could be fought alongside Amps and/or Wizzerds.

I didn't mean putting Hyper Bristles in my game. I just had an idea long ago of what new enemy I could put in Thousand-Year Door (and Hyper Bristle happens to be one of them).

Ah. Still, that'd be a sight to see; we predict at least 5% of gamers who saw a Hyper Bristle would suffer massive jawdrops and torn-out hair.

Leonidas23 In reply to TheSpiderManager [2012-06-15 22:19:31 +0000 UTC]

Not at all. They were made up BEFORE I saw your Goombas. They were inspired by those 'Goombeetles' from the Super Mario Galaxy games (how they weren't affected by Mario's jumps).

Don't say I copied, but my Capped Goombas function almost the same as the Helmet Goombas. I got the idea from the fact that there hasn't been a Goomba only hurt by jumps (Paragoombas to an extent can get hurt by hammers)
