Well, I think that the whole reason vegans and vegetarians eat salads instead of animals is because the vegetables don't have brains or nerves to suffer with. I don't see how not eating animal because you don't want them to be slaughtered and eating salad instead makes you a hypocrite. I'd like to hear your thoughts behind that logic, because it doesn't make sense to me. Vegetables don't suffer. Other than that I totally agree with your statement.

On a side note, I think the stupid comment is the one that came just before yours, where the person said: "Obama's mid day snack no doubt. " Now that's a stupid comment as far as this subject goes. This is not U.S. politics...

My point is people do this because plants have no way of reacting in a visible way.
There are a few, however (Mimosa pudica for instance) which show a certain chemotropism and hormone-like modulated reactions to harmful factors. So, it may not squeal or look at you with teary eyes but make no mistake, plants are living organisms.
I am perfectly fine with being a vegan for personal, health reasons or religious ones. To each, his own. But people that think that if they don't eat a bucket of chicken wings have done a great many deal to keeping chickens from beings slaughtered are so horribly wrong in their ignorance. My father has been a butcher for over 30 years now and he always told me: "Son, I don't KILL animals. I sacrifice them so that people can eat. I try to make their end quick and painless" To this day, I still haven't seen a guy with more love towards animals. And they can sense it. I've seen freaking wild boars come along and eat corn from my dad's hand. Point is, we ought to stop animal abuse in any form but sacrificing animals (if done properly) is not one.

Thank you for replying to my message in a civilized way. Not everyone on the internet is civilized.

As before, I agree with most of what you said, but I still believe that saying people being vegetarians/vegans because they don't want animals to suffer are hypocrites is a very extreme statement. Saying what you said about how people wouldn't eat salad if the salad squealed when eaten... People also wouldn't step on rocks if they cried out in pain when you stepped on them. But they don't. And that's the key. It's not about what could happen in an alternate version of reality. It's about what does happen in the current on, and this reality plants have no way whatsoever of experiencing any suffering of any kind when they are damaged, destroyed or consumed. Saying a small number of plant species can display reactions to harmful things doesn't do much for that either. Just because you can detect body damage doesn't necessarily mean you're suffering because of it. If that were the case, even robots could suffer, because even computers have the ability to detect damage and defined harmful agents within their systems.

And just so you know, I don't think meat is murder or eating it is wrong or that one animal's suffering means more than another's like most people do. That's why most people think it's horrible to eat a dog because of all the suffering, but not horrible to eat a chicken, even if the chicken suffers more. Now that's hypocritical. But I still think your statement about hypocrisy running high in vegans is very extreme statement. I don't particularly like vegans though. I think they're a little crazy.

In fact, I actually think that if the animals are raised properly, you could practically be doing them a favor by raising them for slaughter. I think about what kind of life they'd live in the wild, and what kind of death they'd die out there. Now, some animals I believe want to roam much more than others, and won't like being cooped up at all no matter how well cared for they are, and others wouldn't care because they wouldn't get around much anyway, so if it's something that couldn't really stand captivity well, then keeping them might bother them a lot, and they'd live a happier life free, but beyond captivity, when we come to inevitable issue of death, when they die in the wild, what kind of death would they die? A humane one? I doubt it. They may not live longer lives being raised for meat, but they'd die much better deaths by human hands than the ones they'd die by nature's if they were wild, that's for sure. As long as the raising and killing is done properly.

Your ending point is one I can totally agree with though, and I think think that if someone thinks that by not eating chicken they have saved a chicken, then that person is kind of ignorant. That chicken was already raised to die, and was gonna get killed for meat regardless. All they did was not support the activity with THEIR money. Maybe they're saving a chicken in the future, but probably not.

Exactly. I am a vegetarian and I do not want to eat any meat or fish. I feel would bad for eating something that either has eyes, blood, nerves, and other things. I'm unsure as to if vegetables might be able to feel something.(its just silly me )
Though, I for one, think this is no different than cutting up and displaying chickens, cattle, and other creatures. Its the circle of life and a way of living. I accept that. I do not want to eat meat or fish myself, but I will not force anyone to not eat it either.

You should be careful what you say on Daily Deviations (Or dA's "Most Popular" ones too) if you don't want to start anything. I learned that the hard way and got long, angry messages in my Inbox! >_< Not this time though, 'cause all I did was ask for more of an opinion.

I know; I've actually been on the site for close to seven years. Sometimes you can see if the person your talking to will be receptive and not freak out on you and those are the ones that (if I comment at all) I reply to. However, there are the sad, misguided people and the trolls. If I get a long rant in response I base it's merit on the grammatical correctness based on country of origin. >.<

I had clicked on your icon before I left that reply. It says you've only been a deviant for a month. If I'd known it was actually 7 years I wouldn't have said that.

What you said there sounds like a good method, and I think about those things too.

Its very easy to forget how fortunate we are that we don't have to see cats and dogs as food.

But, there are places that look at cows and goats as we look at our dogs.

This picture is no more as sick as the meat you buy at the store. Food is food.

I keep seeing these comments about how awful it is that these people have to resort to eating dogs or something due to scarcity of food or something else of similar nature. While that has been the case during hard times like war or whatever, dog meat is actually a traditional food in many areas of China and has been for thousands of years for the same reason that any other culture eats any sort of animal, it was available in large quantity. Dog meat still exists as a cuisine not because of scarcity of other sources of food or anything, but simply because to them, it is perfectly normal meat.

To anyone who may find this disturbing, in modern times most of China disagrees with this practice and it's not found in many places outside of rural Canton.

That was pretty disturbing, not gonna lie.

That being said, western slaughterhouses have routinely done similar things to cattle or pigs or other livestock in regards to inhumane slaughter. Animal welfare groups and health regulations have worked to curb those practices and advocated for more humane slaughter methods and laws, but such standards are not always enforced even in the west. Rural China is still very much third world, kind of unfair to put so much heat on them for how they prepare their meat when first world nations aren't much better.

You know, I'm tired of people saying that Asians eat dogs and I'm glad you said that. I help my friend out at her restaraunt and because she's Chinese the ridiculous things people say (other than "Hey! You're not Chinese!"). Like Asians aren't humans and have no feelings or anything and they say it right there in front of her.

I just wanna add that Africans eat dogs too.

In regards to the photo, I can certainly appreciate the photojournalism value as well as its thought provocation potential. To each his own, respect other cultures, and all that good stuff.
