When I was younger I played on kid sites and kid chat rooms which were all safe. Today there are a variety of parental control options. Yep.

I do not see any composition. All it is is a picture that could have been taken by any individual. Did the artist set the props up? Or did he simple take a snap shot of a single horrific moment, post it and call it art? If I posted a picture of a human head severed from its body from a crime scene, would that be considered photojournalism too? Where is the time and raw emotion that the artist should emit from their creation? True, it sparks raw emotion in the individuals who look at it but so does stubbing your toe. Would that be considered art too?

Personally I appreciate art that takes time more than just a photo or paint blotches, however there is an art to having an eye for interesting subjects. I don't like this and I feel its simply there for shock value or to send a message, but whether its art isn't my call. Someone might think this is all kind of artistic and that's their right.

It invokes a feeling within the viewer. Which is what art should do. A picture of a cringing individual that just stubbed his toe barefoot while sprinting across a rocky ocean shore would be considered art. But because we're talking about photojournalism here, which is in many ways divorced from traditional and modern art, the guy did a great job documenting his trip down to the market.

He took a picture in a market, thousands km away from home, in a stranger culture, a picture of something he hated to see... most would have put away their eyes

Oh!

Its depressing to think that the world can be so different from the other half. One one side, humans have the luxury of keeping cats, dogs, and various animals as domestic pets. Meanwhile, on the flipside, humans cannot afford to feed themselves along with a pet and must eat what others have grown attached to. This does not make them bad or any negative thing. I'm sure if you were in their spot you would be feasting on Fido.
Learn some empathy people.
Thanks for hearing me out,
Claire

This is NOT a mater of starvation. People eat dogs there just like we eat cows or chickens - in China it's actually a very traditional part of diet, dogs have been bred for meat since 500 BC or perhaps even earlier.
I'm sorry, but I have hard time understanding why so many people see the photo and think it's like that because people there starve. There are people in Western countries that keep little pigs or little chickens as pets, but eat big pigs/chicken and nobody sees anything wrong with it, nor correlates it with starvation.

Great picture, not only because it makes people think about moral hypocrisy. And that is what art should do - make people think, discuss and question set standards

It is quite a moving piece, but perhaps my sister being a taxidermist makes it not as disgusting to me. If I get the chance, I would like to go to other countries and taste what they taste. Food is food. Though it may be sad, it's life. How about Hindu's who worship cows while we Westerners only think steak and burgers.

I know a lot of people feel this is something that shouldn't have been posted, but it's partially the purpose art and photojournalism to show pieces of the world as it is whether that's a nice thing to see or not. This is an everyday reality for some cultures.
I find it curious that they have that organ hanging out like that. It looks deliberately placed. Is it on display as well?

aSpecialKindofStupid In reply to Canis-ferox [2012-11-21 01:06:02 +0000 UTC]
Probably, In other culture they tie the dead animals up like this and people choose the bits they want. People eat the "waste meats" all the time. So it's probably like that so that people can buy the organs.
(look harder it's been spliced all the way up, the stomach just happens to be hanging out.)

Yeah I wondered if that was what it was about. I could see that it's been cut ventrally; the organ just looked pretty deliberately placed in a very visible position rather than accidentally hanging out. There's another one hanging on the extreme right of the photo (sort of in the shadows) that looks to have been done the same way.

I...well, so long as it's not the center piece at the table. XD
Culture is such an interesting thing.
Here in america, an expensive vase is the conversation starter, in China, a stuffed dog with a...beautiful organ sticking out makes a for a fine shopping story! XD
