I disagree completely with people who say this shouldn't be a DD, I think it is well deserving. It is thought provoking and exposes something rather brutal about human nature that most people would rather gloss over and ignore.
I personally don't see that eating a dog is in anyway morally worse than eating a pig or a cow or a badger (I'm sure people eat them somewhere) an animal is an animal and should not, by species, have any more 'right to life' than the next (I would make an exception for endangered animal but that is to try to prevent extinction of it's species not for the good of the individual.
That said eating dogs does seem rather a waste, as lots of people know they make great pets, and the fun and companionship that comes from a dog in my opinion far outweighs any kind of canine casserole you might make out of it's meat.

I don't wanna offend anyone, but when looking at this I just get a strong urge to word out my disgust. No insult to the photographer of course, at least I don't suppose he/she is the one who killed that dog and did this to it.. May be a "cultural difference", it doesn't matter what it is, it still grosses me out :< (Sorry, duh, I'm sure there are things in my own culture that gross other people out as well, and I'm sure this picture is a normal sight in other people's eyes, but to ME it's a big deal...)

OK, I know this goes on and I appreciate photojournalism for what it is but to make this image a DD so it's forced on to the screens of people who would normally choose not to view this is too much. Just another entry on my list of reasons to leave DA. No disrespect intended to the photographer, it's a nicely composed and executed shot (no pun intended).

It's my understanding that this photo has a Mature Content warning on it, so it's not really being "forced" on their screens.
If people are sensitive to such subject matter then they can put their mature content filters on. Doing this will ensure that they will only see it if they choose to open it.

The second half says this is a nicely composed and executed shot... so obviously the issue is with the content of the photo and some viewers being sensitive to that content.
I explained that sensitive viewers who normally do not wish to see this are not being forced to; the content filter will make things like this invisible to them. If they do not have the mature content filter on, then they are choosing to see this.

Not really, the mature content flag is set by the poster and is therefore completely subjective. If the mechanism was a little more refined rather than the all or nothing approach currently in place then I would agree with you completely. As it stands I have no option to restrict images of dead domestic pets specifically (yes I know that some cultures don't see them this way but that door swings both ways), I can either restrict whatever other people consider mature content or not. I don't agree that by not setting a blanket filter I, or anyone else, is choosing to view images like this when they are presented on a common page. I don't support blanket censorship but I do support consideration and forward thinking, particulalry by those entrusted to run this place - especially when I pay to use it.
The issue is that this image is clearly controversial and distressing to many. It was offered without explanation from either the poster or the person responsible for making it a DD and promoting it to a common page where many, rather than the somewhat more limited audience of the photojournalism gallery, can see it.

As it's been pointed out... if you have the Mature Content filter set to 'OFF' or if you click through the warning--it's viewer-beware at that point. The option is in place to avoid seeing things that may be off-putting.

That's probably because to a good number of people... it looks like a day at the market.
There very often aren't mature content filters on pictures of zombies or other such possibly 'gory' images. This really isn't all that far from that if it's viewed objectively. It was certainly a Polite thing to include the filter after receiving the DD.

Not very many people can look at this objectively, that's a silly argument to make. Looking at things objectively, nothing in the entire world can be disgusting or nice or beautiful or ugly. Forcing people to look at things objectively denies them all their opinions and emotions. That, and this isn't a zombie picture. This a real dog with it's insides out. Everyone knows zombies are just fictional things, but many people have pet dogs or cats or whatever in their home that are family to them. It's not hard to understand how distressing something like this is to those people.

I'm not trying to say that this might not be distressing to people. However, there are a number of other things on dA that don't get a maturity filter that might also be very distressing to lots of folks. Images of suicide, people who are shot/wounded/dead (even if animated), make-up artists doing lacerations, wounds and other such things.
There are any number of things that could be considered distressing and upsetting to a lot of people. Even those images that edge into pornography (or some might see them as flat out pornographic). Yes, dA has provided a filter for artists to place on their own works out of politeness. It's still a matter of user-beware, in my opinion, since this is the internet. I'd rather run across something that I found not-to-my-liking periodically than encourage censorship.
As far as the majority of users on here... many also seem to agree that this is thought-provoking and don't find fault with the subject matter.
Likely, it's simply a matter of agreeing to disagree. Especially with the degree to which this image has sparked people's opinions--there won't be any convincing of one side or another (nor is that necessary).
