It's a simple cultural difference. To them this is no different than us eating chicken or whatever. Frankly, it's not like we in the west are any better given how we treat our mass-bred slaughterhouse animals.

ITS NOT THAT SIMPLE. Its not like they are eating the dog! IT WAS A WASTE OF A life... >:V

Actually they were, or were going to. It was a photo of a market in Canton. In places like that, markets like to have meat hanging from hooks or racks for people to see before they buy, kind of how like some butcher shops have chicken hanging in their display windows.

BlueGardevoir In reply to SkittlesANDme [2012-11-21 16:46:24 +0000 UTC]

What.
The reason they eat dogs in that area is because it's a traditional food dating back thousands of years. I believe it is theorized that the natives of the area originally domesticated wolves as a food source, extending then to having domesticated dogs as a food source the same way that western areas have domesticated pigs or cows or sheep as food sources.
If it makes you feel better other areas of China banned the practice. The tradition just survives in a few pockets because it is a part of their culture. Just because most people would rather see dogs as companions doesn't make these peoples' cultural traditions wrong.

I eat snails and frogs sometimes...
In south america that's guinea pig...

Did you prefer to eat the animal that is genetically the most close to us ?

Culture, choice, and respect, all that matter.

Hah... people... Somehow in their minds only pics portraying BEAUTIFUL stuff deserve DDs. I agree with others who commented before and said that people get upset just because it's a dog and because they're hypocrites. As if the meat they eat every day doesn't come from an animal too.

though I am opposed to this , simply because I have no idea how they animal was killed and I am not over fond of any animal being killed or raised for meat in a brutal way.

It certainly does get one's mind thinking of the moral greys and cultural taboos.

though i can certainly see why many people are offended by this.
after all if you own a dog then it is no different to seeing your own family member strung up.

But people slaughter they're family cow all the time, I think it's stupid how people seem to think killing one animal to eat is okay but not the other...

mechanicalmasochist In reply to aSpecialKindofStupid [2012-11-20 20:14:34 +0000 UTC]

well i'm not saying I agree with that.

but what you are saying is different to owning a pet
since a raised cow was probably raised and thought of as meat from start to end
where as when people keep dogs the though of killing there beloved pet is like asking them to commit homicide.

I mean come on, there are people out there who dress up their dogs and teach them to do very human things or even treat them as children.

so like I said.
to dog owners who own dogs as family members this is like seeing a family member hung up dead, there for they find it offensive.

Well if people find it offensive they should be mature people, and move on. If you don't agree with something, turn the other cheek.I find it offensive that women can't shake a man's hand in the Muslim religion, but It's their way of life and I have no right to criticize it. I disagree with out a word, because it would be offensive to them. How do you think a person who eats dog over in China would feel if they read these comments telling them they are evil for their way of life? this dog was nobody's pet. This is the normal life in Canton, not accepting other cultures is a severe flaw in society, and it needs to stop.
If something challenges your personal creed, just leave the situation and be a civil cultured person.

woah there, I was'nt speaking for myself remember?

though I would like to say
if no one ever spoke up and simply turned cheek to what they thought was wrong,
then nothing would ever get better or improve.

But I guess turning a blind eye has become a form of art in this modern age.

I really don't care

aSpecialKindofStupid In reply to mechanicalmasochist [2012-11-21 01:23:37 +0000 UTC]

I'm just saying this practice needs no changes. So they eat dogs... and then?
Turn a blind eye to to slaughtering cows, turn a blind eye to slaughtering dogs...
Not all things should be ignored, but if somebody is ok with not being allowed to shake hands, all the more power to them. If they wish they were allowed to shake hands, then that where we should voice our thoughts.

Why not as a DD? It's a very poignant piece of art that evokes a lot of emotions--across the board. It has also very clearly done it's job of exposing one culture to others through visual means. It's not an 'easy' or a 'soft' image, but art isn't required to be any of those things.

I think this is a wonderful inclusion as a DD.

On the brighter side, the photo is of good quality, which gives reason for it to be selected.

It's because people like to live in bubbles and our natural instinct is to shun that which is different. This is different so they automatically label it as wrong and find it disgusting.
Personally I think food is food. People should take a good look at how the animals they find acceptable to eat are treated, before judging other cultures on what they eat and labelling it as cruel etc. It's so easy though to separate the animal from food when you go to a supermarket and buy it already butchered and wrapped in plastic.

This is a really interesting and thought provoking piece. I wish I hadn't clicked on it (I am slightly emotional when it comes to dogs/cats as companion animals) but at the same time am glad I did. it just shows you the differences in cultures and what is taboo, and creates quite an emotional response and causes the viewer to think. I love how one shot can create all of these things.

It's listed in photojournalism, this is showing us the way of life of people different from yourself. I think you should be more appreciative for the chance to open your mind to other cultures that live on the same planet as you.

I do appeciate this, and this photo is def. showing some other sides of life, BUT! Deviantart is the site for people of all ages, and if there are people with weak nerves (like me) and cildren, I hink that they can CHOOSE what to look at. DD's shouldn't always be fun and goofy, but also, in my opinion they shouldn't contain material which is THAT sensitive.
I have no problems with existance of this photo (okay, It's disgusting, but whatsoever, photojournalism is photojournalism) but....just not in the DD.

Why-did-Kenji-die In reply to Lunar-Graphite [2012-11-20 23:01:41 +0000 UTC]

This is not a site for children, it's full of sexual and graphic material. Many things I've reported that needed mature tags were denied so I know for sure children shouldn't be here. And this is the reality of eating meat. Soooo yeah. What we do to our food is way worse

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Lunar-Graphite In reply to Why-did-Kenji-die [2012-11-20 23:12:22 +0000 UTC]

You may think that I'm overly emotional person, but I still think that this is not a DD material. A good photo, but not DD.
Reality is reality, but...not everyone wants to see it.
Maybe I'm a hypocrite, idk, but I don't really care how we treat our food before it's served into the shops. Killing is horrible, but it's in our nature. We can't survive without meat.
...But most of people would agree that they wouldn't want to see how the animal looks right after death. It's a matter of choice.
So for DD this is a little bit too much.
What's the problem with people expressing their negative feelings for this photo? This is natural reaction for stuff like that.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Why-did-Kenji-die In reply to Lunar-Graphite [2012-11-21 04:14:52 +0000 UTC]

We don't humanly kill our food, we basically torture them to death and force them to live in terrible conditions. Chicken's beaks are ground down to nubs so they cant fight, while they are alive and they feel that pain. Their nails in their feet are also cut. Pigs ears are cut off in the same way. You should watch a youtube video called Earthlings. They stuff as many chickens they can into cages and they can't move let alone spread their wings. All to fit our demanding lifestyle of more and more meat. Are you again going to say you don't care how we treat our food before it's served? Jam packed with steroids, antibiotics, hormones, and other numerous unnatural chemicals? How nice of you not to care Ignorance is bliss after all. This photo is nice compared to the terrible ways we treat our food. And as I told some other deviant who said this is not DD worthy, there are no rules of what can or cannot be a DD or how much work must go into it or how awesome of an idea it has to be. I can take a picture of a stick and it can be a DD. There just aren’t any DD standards. So that’s nice of you to come up with personal fictional rules for DDs ^^ sorry this doesn’t match your ideal.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Lunar-Graphite In reply to Why-did-Kenji-die [2012-11-21 12:26:28 +0000 UTC]

And what are you trying to do? You're trying to make me like this? Sorry, I won't.
And I'm not that one who's eating meat, so yeah, I don't care, and probably won't. Ignorance is bliss as you said, but why It sounds like something bad? It is after all. If we'd care for everything, we'd go mad soon.
But okay! Let's tolerate all! Let's make DD's from porn, homosexuality, faith, cruelty, child abuse and all that! Let's show ALL the cruelty of world if you say so.
Idk. Who's interested in that stuff will find out, and this photo is forced.
Just...One more thing - If you make something negative, prepare for negatve response. This is a normal thing. There are as much opinions as much people in this world.
For me It was an unpleasant experience, and I said that.
I'm not the one who will say only nice things.
Honesty.
I don't care if you agree or not, I'm just expressing my opinion.
So peace. still thing It was wrog, and you didn't convince me because....just no.
It's against my ideology.
I don't judge you for liking that piece, and you don't judge me for disliking it.
~Peace
