Description
Let's examine Spyed's vision of the future, shall we?A future where the site is wading in money, brought in by the thousands and thousands of successful artists who give freely their own work, so that strangers on mobile phones can buy a random deviant's piece of art for their wallpaper.
A site where the popular and most bestest artists EVAR are the ones who pull in the big fish - the ones that pay the bills. And those of us who've paid for subscriptions just to sit on our laurels and not DO anything spectacular (be it because we've got such severe carpal tunnel syndrome that we can't pick up a pencil without a week's worth of pain, or because we're just not that talented, or just because we want to BROWSE the site and help our friends out by hooking them up with other artists) - we become the 'bottom of the barrel'. Those who need JUST a little poking, prodding and YELLING IN A BULLHORN at us to MAKE us into 'good, popular, moneymaking artists'.
Look.
Artists have always been notoriously BROKE. "Starving artists."
Some of us are brilliant artists who can't afford food let alone a subscription - getting online via a library or a school lab. Will THEY see profits from this site in Spyed's future? No. Why?
Because there is no money here. There is business dealing, sure. There are probably sucker investors that Spyed has convinced his ideas are valid.
However, he never has considered, by the way he posts in his journals, how the average deviant feels about this all.
There are more than one MILLION individuals on DA. That's about the same as the population here where I live, in Sunny San Diego.
And look at the problems that politics in the hands of big business have brought our city council: The mayor, only called so because he forced an issue of 'but they didn't fill in the BUBBLE even though they took the time to WRITE IN my opponent's name', having resigned from his post months early. The deputy mayor, TWO DAYS LATER, convicted of financial crimes. Leaving the city council - already known for being corrupt and in the pockets of the local construction and parking companies - to hold a new election...
Now ... I don't want that to happen to DeviantArt. Why should it?
We KNOW who started it. Jark and Matteo.
Not Jark and Spyed! Such a bold faced lie, right there where people might swallow it whole and choke on it.
Anyway. Look, Deviantart is an ART site. It's like an art commune, out in the desert, where a bunch of hippies first started showing their stuff to each other - and it blossomed into something like Burning Man, with thousands of artists coming together and jamming until the sun comes up...
Only... Look at Burning Man and see the same kind of domination starting to creep in. It's SO expensive to go there now. Used to be free. (I could be wrong. It used to be cheap.) Look at how almost all 'big corporate attitudes' have ruined what used to be small-towns, mom-and-pop businesses, the Walmart phenomenon is pervasive. It does not make that piratical business attitude RIGHT. It only drives home that Spyed is lying - to himself mostly - about this community and what we really are.
We don't need 'Scaling'.
I don't need a den mother telling me I need to 'pull my weight' in this community. I post my art, and I give lots of comments (10 to 1, I can't recall my exact gallery stat) and I try to help those artists who I think are going to benefit from some critical talk. Like most of us, I post because I feel good about a piece and I want to show it off. That's what this site is for. Not to make money for a couple people.
If I wanted to make money off my art, I'll get a CafePress account, thanks.

FUCKING PREACH IT MAN!!
I hate that people are selling prints! It's art, not a money mine! Corporate mouthwhores! BRING MATTEO BACK!! I'll send my comics to an agent if I want a job publishing them! (Which I do)

I have to say, I agree wholeheartedly. I don't comment as often as I should, I'm lazy and just +fav stuff. However, I don't have a subscription and I don't plan on getting one--I don't need to see my deviantWATCH list in all thumbnails, thanks. Awesome and a very well-articulated job.

Thanks Continue to show your support of deviantart for artists - by commenting more!
I like your figures in your gallery - they totally remind me of my stuff from many moons ago.

I'll admit I was scared when I heard all the fuss.
But I do wonder, how much does it cost to run deviantART?
Tens of thousands of free accounts must cost a pretty penny...dA needs -something- to support such a massive community.
It was only to be expected...
And sure, CafePress is an option, but those subscribing here did so willingly, & probably for a reason. They're paying for the extra services (and in the case of print making), paying dA for helping them to make money. They can do whatever they want with their art. I'm not going to cry for them.
But ripping people off, & theft, is wrong. Of course.

That's some awesome talk.
I've lurked here for more than two years... yet I didn't really do anything but watch. I've read the forums, looked at people's work, seen who was doing what (Jark, Lolly, Spyed and others) and met some fabulous people here. But I've never talked, never critized, never... did anything... I was just bringing money in by subscribing.
I feel guilty of that now. When I've seen the fuss with Jark, I thought "all this time I was in the wrong way, and I was going at an hell of a speed!". I've decided to become more into the community now, and your message here IS for something!
Money isn't everything, it is only the base. dA is so much more. Thank you -so- much for the slap in the face, I needed that!

Doing it right now!
I won't just give up dA now that I've understood how important it is. Art needs this website, there's nothing like it anywhere. Gotta fight for it, gotta keep it on the right track: arts!

Heh. I hafta concur with all o' that. 'Specially starving artists. Making Hoppity and Bee Comix is gonna run Ian and I into the ground real quick. The publishing costs are insane. ._.; Phuh. I certainly know I don't wanna be "ranked" as an artist. Jeez. Nothing could hurt one's art esteem more than seeing just how far down the list they'd be, if they even made it on the list at all... Bleh. The whole situation kinda follows the history travels in circles thing, thinking about wal-mart and stuff. I bet he turned over in his grave when they started staying open holidays.

I feel for you. really i do, and it sucks, and i support jark. On the other hand business IS business....deviantart became a business when it started trying to make a profit......businesses are in the business of making money.....and sadly that's not always pretty or fun, and even barely legal or moral....but a business is here to make money. business is business

Yes, but 'is it Art' ?
I'll just be glad when it's all over. I'm now so tuned to Yellow that I automatically click on everything with the faintest hint of yellow in it, to see if it's a Jark-art

Heh, that last sentence really got to the point of the matter, eh? People on dA aren't money-hungry artlords... we're working from free accounts, after all. And those who subscribe often get subscriptions from friends as well, as it's hard to pay for internet frivolities when you're kinda without food.
We should all migrate over to CafΓ©press instead of subscribing if DA goes elitist on us.

Thanks.
I've thought about what I would put there, but then realized that... most of my stuff is sooo mediocre. *maybe* people would pay for it, but more likely not. And plus, I don't *care* if people *buy* it. If they *like* it, if it means something to them... that's what counts...

-nods- Yeah. I'd prefer to buy a domain to put up all my stuff than a subscription to a specific site just to help a company grow and take more of my money and give less back. And since my art has gone all weird on me lately, I doubt a CafΓ©press account would be profitable.
