Description Are you relatively new to digital photography, and want your work to look more polished?
Then this is for you!

I am going to share some tips and suggestions that helped me when I first started out, without getting into technical details.

It might take a while to load, please be patient

Please feel free to point out any corrections/additions.

Update: I presented a live tutorial on May 7th in the #photography chatroom on dAmn, that builds upon this one. You can find the log here: [link]

I wouldn't consider myself a beginner, but I definiately learned something from this tutorial!

Also, that note on "suggestions for your dA gallery" denouncing snapshots and fake blood was great.

Awesome job!

I have to disagree with you on the part about putting a photograph through filters. Yes, it should no longer be considered a photograph, but it doesn't make it any less what you would call "art."

Hi, this is splendid! A fave, definitely.

I found the sentence "Also, try not to focus on a black or white object in order to get a better exposure" (Pre Focus) not smooth, particularly because it caused some mild confusion. Its not the sentence itself, but how it fitted into he paragraph.
"In order to get a more accurate metering and exposure, avoid focusing on a black or white object."

Just my opinion.

Im just getting started to this, this tutorial is great, not only in the photo aspect, but in the gallery tips too, i ahve lost of screenshots, i really dont use, i should get rid off the, and take them to scraps, trying to get more serious in this, so, this had helped me pretty much.

I've been having trouble with my photography and I always thought it was the quality of my digital camera or my film. I have a hard time capturing emotion, but I really think this will help me. When the school year starts I'm taking some art and photography classes so I can perfect my photography. Thank you for all the tips! A more advanced one would be nice.

Thanks for that tutorial! Some things I'd already figured out by myself (e.g. flash destroying the lighting and the mood) but other hints come in really handy for me, most of all those about composition. Funnily enough, of the first image with the colorful wall and the photographer I like the uncropped version better than the "improved" photo ;] I just would have cropped that black thingie on the ceiling out of the photo. Now I'm off to calibrate my monitor :]

Oh well.... can't calibrate brightness and contrast independently, and all in all it seems my low end notebook's LCD display is rather unsuitable for working with photos :[
